Reception

Rotten Tomatoes reported a 90% approval rating for the third season based on 102 reviews, with an average rating of 8.50/10. Its critical consensus reads: "Olivia Colman shines, but as The Crown marches on in reliably luxurious fashion through time it finds space for the characters around her, providing ample opportunity for the appealing ensemble to gleam, too."{{cite web|url=https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_crown/s03|title=The Crown: Season 3|website=Rotten Tomatoes|access-date=December 14, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191105190952/https://rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_crown/s03|archive-date=November 5, 2019|url-status=live}} On Metacritic, the season holds a score of 84 out of 100 based on 30 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".{{cite web|url=https://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-crown/season-3|title=The Crown – Season 3 reviews|website=Metacritic|access-date=December 14, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191108210235/https://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-crown/season-3|archive-date=November 8, 2019|url-status=live}}

Historical accuracy

The Queen did not visit Churchill following his final stroke. Writer Hugo Vickers claims that by then he was senile and incapable of holding a conversation.{{Cite news|url=https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1207400/The-Crown-season-3-fact-checked-errors-historical-inaccuracies-Princess-Alice|title=The Crown season 3 fact-checked: What are the biggest errors and historical inaccuracies?|last=Debnath|first=Neela|date=November 21, 2019|work=Daily Express|access-date=November 26, 2019|archive-date=November 24, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191124194639/https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1207400/The-Crown-season-3-fact-checked-errors-historical-inaccuracies-Princess-Alice|url-status=live}} Anthony Blunt's exposure as a Soviet spy also drew criticism. Vickers noted that the episode did not mention that he was publicly exposed in 1979 and stripped of his knighthood, while also noting that he never resided at Buckingham Palace and ridiculing a scene in which he discusses his exposure with Prince Philip in an attempt to blackmail the royal family.{{Cite magazine|first=Eleanor Bley|last=Griffiths|url=https://www.radiotimes.com/news/on-demand/2019-11-17/the-crown-anthony-blunt-season-three/|title=Was the Queen's art adviser Anthony Blunt really a Soviet spy? The depiction of the relationship with President Johnson has been criticised. It has been suggested that he did not refuse to attend Churchill's funeral, in response to Wilson's refusal to support the Vietnam War, but that he was genuinely unable due to poor health. His disappointment with Wilson's views on Vietnam had developed much later.{{Cite magazine|first=Ciara|last=Nugent|url=https://time.com/5333083/queen-elizabeth-trump-visit-presidents/|title=Here's How Every Meeting Between the Queen and a U.S. President Went|access-date=December 10, 2019|magazine=Time|date=June 3, 2019|archive-date=October 27, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191027012533/https://time.com/5333083/queen-elizabeth-trump-visit-presidents/|url-status=live}} Historians also denied the episode's implication that no US president had ever been to Balmoral; Eisenhower had visited Balmoral while president in 1959.{{Cite magazine|first=Chloe|last=Foussaines|url=https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a29311370/duke-of-windsor-death-true-story/|title=Here's How Every Meeting Between the Queen and a U.S. President Went|date=July 12, 2018|magazine=Time|access-date=December 6, 2019|archive-date=December 6, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191206174537/https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a29311370/duke-of-windsor-death-true-story/|url-status=live}} Critics noted that the episode did not mention that Johnson had been the only president since Truman never to have met the Queen.{{Cite news|first=Marie|last=Claire|url=https://www.marieclaire.com/culture/a29776788/lyndon-b-johnson-the-queen-reject-balmoral-the-crown/|title=Did LBJ Reject The Queen's Invitation to Visit the U.K.?|date=November 17, 2019|work=Marie Claire|access-date=December 6, 2019|archive-date=December 6, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191206174530/https://www.marieclaire.com/culture/a29776788/lyndon-b-johnson-the-queen-reject-balmoral-the-crown/|url-status=live}} The implication that Johnson did not know who Princess Margaret was before her visit to America was also criticised. The Princess did attend a White House dinner, but the details are mostly fictional (such as her carousing with Johnson and kissing him, dirty limericks, and helping secure a US bailout, which in fact had already been negotiated).{{Cite news|first=Madison|last=Feller|url=https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a29775483/the-crown-princess-margaret-america-white-house-lyndon-johnson/|title=The Crown: The True Story Of Princess Margaret's 1965 Trip To America|date=November 16, 2019|work=Elle|access-date=December 21, 2019|archive-date=December 22, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191222021756/https://www.elle.com/culture/movies-tv/a29775483/the-crown-princess-margaret-america-white-house-lyndon-johnson/|url-status=live}}{{Cite magazine|first=Suyin|last=Haynes|url=https://time.com/5722112/the-crown-princess-margaret/|title=The True Story Behind Princess Margaret's Storyline on The Crown Season 3|date=November 15, 2019|magazine=Time|access-date=December 21, 2019|archive-date=November 19, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191119021658/https://time.com/5722112/the-crown-princess-margaret/|url-status=live}} The depiction of Princess Margaret and President Johnson publicly insulting the late President Kennedy during the same White House dinner was seen as highly unlikely since members of the Kennedy family, as well as John Connally, who was riding with Kennedy during the assassination, were reportedly among those who attended the dinner.{{cite news |last1=Arkin |first1=Daniel |title='The Crown' season three: Did Princess Margaret really party with LBJ? |url=https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/tv/crown-season-three-did-princess-margaret-really-party-lbj-n1082281 |access-date=26 August 2021 |work=NBC News |date=17 November 2019}}

The relationship with Princess Alice has also drawn criticism for Prince Philip's depiction as being estranged from his mother and objecting to her visiting London. In reality, he visited her regularly and often transported her by plane, and her depicted interview with a journalist from The Guardian never happened. Vickers also stated that the same episode ignored that Prince Philip encouraged her to move to London permanently.

Prince Charles did visit the Duke of Windsor in Paris in 1972,{{Cite news|url=https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a29322538/prince-charles-duke-of-windsor-edward-viii-relationship-the-crown-true-story/|title=Inside Prince Charles's Relationship with the Duke of Windsor|last=FOUSSIANES|first=CHLOE|date=November 23, 2019|work=Town and Country|access-date=November 26, 2019|archive-date=November 27, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191127221703/https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a29322538/prince-charles-duke-of-windsor-edward-viii-relationship-the-crown-true-story/|url-status=live}} although the depiction of the letters concerning his affections for Camilla was criticised: the Prince and Camilla had met, but were not intimately close during the Duke's lifetime.{{Cite news|url=https://www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/arts-and-culture/a29873503/the-crown-netflix-tv-show-accuracy/|title=Is The Crown Accurate? It has been suggested that there was no plot by the palace to prevent Prince Charles and Camilla's marriage, with Camilla's love for Andrew Parker Bowles being genuine, and Prince Charles unable to decide.{{Cite magazine|first=Julie|last=Miller|url=https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/11/prince-charles-camilla-parker-bowles-anne-andrew-the-crown|title=The Crown: The Truth About the Romances of Charles, Camilla, Anne, and Andrew|date=November 18, 2019|magazine=Vanity Fair|access-date=December 6, 2019|archive-date=November 20, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191120174236/https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/11/prince-charles-camilla-parker-bowles-anne-andrew-the-crown|url-status=live}} It has also been suggested that Princess Anne's relations with Andrew Parker Bowles did not overlap with Prince Charles and Camilla's introduction. Reviews of the episode noted that it ignored more significant events, citing Princess Anne's 1973 wedding to Captain Mark Phillips and her attempted kidnapping in 1974.
