Many transgender people have been contestants or judges in the Drag Race franchise. The franchise originated with RuPaul's Drag Race, which premiered in the United States in 2009. Since then, several adaptations and spin-offs have been created internationally. In 2019, The Guardian said the U.S. series "is known for its camp theatrics, but it has become a flashpoint for discussions of race and representation in the queer community and trans-inclusivity."{{Cite news |last=Gorman |first=Alyx |date=2019-08-26 |title=RuPaul's Drag Race Australia: TV phenomenon coming to say 'shantay, g'day' |url=https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/aug/26/rupauls-drag-race-australia-tv-phenomenon-coming-to-say-shantay-gday |access-date=2025-04-01 |work=The Guardian |publisher=Guardian Media Group |language=en-GB |issn=0261-3077 |oclc=60623878}} RuPaul's stance on trans inclusion has evolved over time.{{Cite web |last=Jung |first=E. According to Them, "Longtime RuPaul's Drag Race fans know that the show's history of trans representation has been something of a mixed bag. The program, revolutionary in many ways for the LGBTQ+ community, has also included several segments that have made jokes at trans people's expense, including the infamous original catchphrase for Ru's video mail and a season 6 challenge that asked contestants to guess whether a close-up picture was of a trans or cis woman."{{Cite web |last=Rodriguez |first=Mathew |date=2023-06-28 |title=Here’s Our Dream Cast for an All-Trans Season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ |url=https://www.them.us/story/ru-pauls-drag-race-all-stars-all-trans-season-cast |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250109034150/https://www.them.us/story/ru-pauls-drag-race-all-stars-all-trans-season-cast |archive-date=2025-01-09 |access-date=2025-03-31 |website=Them |publisher=Condé Nast |language=en-US}}

In 2023, Bernardo Sim of Out magazine wrote, "Over the years, drag performers who identified as trans revolutionized the way that mainstream audiences perceived them in the RuPaul's Drag Race franchise."{{Cite web |title=10 Trans Queens That Made History On 'RuPaul's Drag Race' in the US |url=https://www.out.com/gay-tv-shows/trans-drag-race-queens#rebelltitem1 |access-date=2025-03-31 |website=Out |language=en |issn=1062-7928}}
