Well, for me it’s because they’re the trains I’ve grown up with, whenever I’d go to London I’d always be on a class 444, and therefore I’ve got quite fond memories of them Class444SWRail (talk) 05:01, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

We do not include known named services in service tables. If it's included in the service table, the one special service is not noted for the same redundancy reason (i.e. King's Cross to Aberdeen is noted as 3 trains per day instead of 4 as the extra 4th service is the Northern Lights service). You may not be aware, but on the railways of the United Kingdom the law requires there to be distance markers at intervals along one side of the track or the other, they show the official distance measured along the railway from some datum point. On the National Rail system they are at intervals of a quarter of a mile. They were surveyed some time ago, usually when a railway was ready for opening, and are generally not resurveyed when a route is altered or a station is closed - if this were necessary, a resurvey would be necessary almost every year. Official mileages are easily verified from well-researched publications such as

:I am aware of the legality and such, but I do not believe that it is very useful for people today to be adhering solely to routes that are often not used, if even in existence anymore. I believe that the actual distance taken by the fastest service should be displayed, at the very least alongside the official distance.

:::The service itself does, but the route rarely does. All of the fastest services between London Paddington and Cardiff Central, for example, have operated via the Severn Tunnel since its opening, and all of the fastest services between London Paddington and Penzance have operated via Westbury. Besides that, it is not even possible to operate a service via Plymouth Millbay for example, as the site is occupied by what I believe is now a leisure centre, you’d have a real job on your hands operating trains through that. I accept the idea of recentism, but this is not an example of it, given this has been the case for most peoples’ entire lifetimes now Class444SWRail (talk) 10:09, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
