Links in May Abrahamse article

Hi there! I'm a little confused by your recent reversion of my edit to May Abrahamse. I can't find where in the Manual of Style it is stated that "link once means: once in lead and once in body". I also feel that linking 'Belgravia' to a redirect is unnecessary, and a bit confusing to readers as Cape Town does not mention Belgravia at all. Could you explain your rationale? I'm still a fairly new editor so I appreciate any info :) Audrey Woolf (talk) 21:01, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:: You can visit whatever featured article (our highest class articles) and will find one link in the lead and another in the body. My latest (on its way) is Easter Oratorio, and the review is mentioned on its talk page. - What do you suggest to tell readers where Belgravia is? I found the name in a source just today, and am no expert in the area. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:::Thanks, I hadn't noticed that with the links before but now see it is indeed a convention (though I am curious why the MOS seems to say otherwise). On Belgravia, I have also done a bit of research and have found a curious lack of information on it, but would suggest "Belgravia, Cape Town" in the text with no links is sufficient. Audrey Woolf (talk) 21:42, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:::: I also did a bit of research and found that it's mentioned in Athlone, Cape Town. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:53, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:Also, could you explain why you feel the detail of her work in 2004 belongs under 'Personal life' rather than 'Career'? Thank you! Audrey Woolf (talk) 21:05, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:: The late performance is not really "career" but more honouring history, but feel free to move. This conversation should go to the article talk where others could chime in. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

Nationality of South African soprano May Abrahamse

Dear Gerda,* the story of May Abrahamse caught my attention when she appeared among Recent deaths (Main Page). Why [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=May_Abrahamse&diff=1290185001&oldid=1290026334 this removal of a bracketed explanation] that mention of nationality isn't mandatory in a biographical Infobox? Particularly for a South African active on the cultural scene and performing during the period of apartheid, her racial identity seems a peculiar omission. (N.B. I haven't read through previous versions of via the Edit history to see whether content with this information had been included and since stricken from the page content by you or another contributor, nor have I opened links.) Your thoughts on this matter would be enlightening. *And kindly regard the familiar address here as appreciation for the wonderful scope of your contributions; you're one of my favorite Wikimedians from past encounters on topics of mutual interest. -- Deborahjay (talk) 08:07, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

: Nationality is (generally) not mentioned when it can be inferred from places of death and birth. Thank you for your kindness. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:18, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

::Perhaps "nationality" doesn't convey what I intended: not "country of birth" or citizenship, but rather "race" or "ethnicity." Whether or not it's in the WD Infobox, the present version of the page makes no mention whether she was White, Afrikaans, Coloured, mixed-race, what? This likely would be misleading to infer from her surname. So my query for you is twofold:

::* What's the answer?

::* Does it belong in the page text? If no, why not?

::Perhaps in her long life this arose in citable mainstream media interviews, cultural reviews, or similar. Thank you! -- Deborahjay (talk) 09:58, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

::: We had a picture until yesterday when it was deleted. Please raise the questions on the article talk. I don't know enough. I just met the article from the list of people who died. Perhaps John would know how ethnicity should be handled for South Africans. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:08, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

::::It's actually a fair point. In South African terms she was Coloured, meaning a mixture of European and African ancestry. Gerda, do the sources mention this? If they do we can and should mention it in the article. John (talk) 15:30, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

::::: The sources I saw didn't say so explicitly, just implied it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:34, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

Bach

Hi Gerda Arendt, I've noticed your help edits on the Bach page where you are listed as a top ten editor. My thoughts were to ask if you might be interested in looking at the Bach page with the possibility of moving it forward for a promotion. The Bach article looked like it has suffered from some over-edits over time and I've made several dozen edits to try to enhance it. The Bach page seems to have a good daily page count which appears to highlight its visibility to Wikipedia readers, and maybe you might think about doing it as a co-nomination. Any thoughts? ErnestKrause (talk) 20:14, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

: Thank you for the idea, Ernest Krause. Bach is read and found already. I assume you mean go for Good article (GA). I did that for composers whose articles I considerably improved, such as Alexander Goehr, but Bach was already in place when I joined Wikipedia. I made many edits to it, but mostly linking to new articles and reverting what was not an improvement. Also, GA noms have only one nominator. You can always try, and see what a reviewer thinks. (I tried for Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 that I had not written, and the reviewer said no.) You could also run a Peer review. Up to you ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:06, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks for getting back to me on this. If you have already read and found the article, then it seems possible that I could ask if you could review a GAN for Johann Sebastian Bach which I could nominate at this time, and after that I'm seeing that you currently have a nomination for Ich bin ein guter Hirt, BWV 85 – Church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, which I could then do as a review for your GAN for your article. Does it sound interesting? ErnestKrause (talk) 20:14, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

::: In principle yes, but I don't do any GA reviews because I'm not a native speaker, so could never really judge the prose. The best author of classical composer articles and a great GA reviewer is Tim riley. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:18, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

::::Tim riley appears to be busy with two GANs at this time; I'm not sure what his availability might be at this time. ErnestKrause (talk) 15:50, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

::::: There is no rush. I always just nominate and see what happens, instead of picking a reviewer. Well, sometimes I ask those who helped before if they have time. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:53, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

{{od}}

Hello {{u|Tim riley}}; Both Gerda Arendt and myself appear to think that you would be a good choice for possibly reviewing a GAN for the Bach biography article. I've made several dozen edits lately, mostly to address multiple over-edits to the article and the article seems to look a bit better at this time. If you have a chance to read the article then possibly you might be able to find some time in your schedule to try to do the review and I'll nominate it at that time. If your schedule allows for this then it would be nice to hear from you about it. ErnestKrause (talk) 19:27, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

How about getting Erik Satie, the work of many - to GA, soon? Happy birthday! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:44, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

:hi Gerda this is a great idea but looking at the article I’m not sure what to do to improve it. It looks pretty comprehensive to me. Mccapra (talk) 22:25, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

:: that's good to know - you could nominate ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:28, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

=Bach at GAN=

It was nice of you to stop at my Talk page with greetings about Bach at GAN. It has been a recurrent image to see your nominations for Bach's many cantatas which you have been doing. In the past weeks, I asked you about moving the article forward even further. I've been giving some thought to maybe going ahead with a FAC nomination for the Bach main article and it might be a good project for a co-nomination with you. What do you think? ErnestKrause (talk) 16:15, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

: Thank you but I know the article too little ;) - I may review. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:21, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

He was the conductor when I encountered my first Bach cantata, and I saw his work in two cities where I lived. (I smiled when I looked at the main page for 2020: Claudio Monteverdi for TFA!) Another FA is hidden on today's main page, written by a friend long ago. Regarding feedback

Hey Gerda, I'm just leaving you this message. 4meter4 and RoySmith's advice about being open to feedback, even if it's negative, is good advice. These editors are trying to help you. They respect you as an editor, they are not downplaying your wonderful contributions to Wikipedia.

You've mentioned in the past that you want to avoid long discussions and conflict. However, your reluctance to accept feedback, as well as avoiding compromise unless it's on your own terms, only further contributes to such conflicts. Being open to feedback, even if it ultimately means a result you don't want, can help prevent such cases. You don't always have to follow feedback, of course, but at least acknowledging them, if not adjusting to it, would go a long way.

Thank you and happy editing. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:46, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

: I had a question on your talk, - is this the answer? I asked you if we should say about Margot Friedländer (in case there was a DYK) that she loved her dog ? The answer could be as short as yes or no. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:19, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::No, this has nothing to do with that question. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:33, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::: I'd still like an answer. Today is the birthday of Erik Satie. I just made my story, picking some characteristic facts connected to something better known, with an image and music. Perhaps - without looking at my story, just the article: what would you say as a DYK about Satie? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::::I'm not at a computer right now so I'll reply later on my talk page once I'm on my laptop. I can take a look at the articles if you like.

::::For the record, my message was actually a response to the Easter Oratorio nomination and to a lesser extent the Bach cantata nomination and had no relation to your May stories. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 08:07, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::::: It doesn't matter where the question came from. My desire is to say something characteristic. I'm determined to make the Easter Oratorio a FA, and then can say a bit more about it, Easter 2026 or some Easter later. Thank you for the inspiration to go for that, but I can't do it for every little article ;) - Feedback for you: I regard the one DYK sentence we give our readers as (often) the first impression they will have of the subject, and try hard to make that as unique and specific as possible, to do justice to the subject. Readers can decide if they are interested in reading more or not. (Explaining why I'm still ashamed of the Berit Lindholm hook.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:19, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::: The conversation continued on User talk:Narutolovehinata5#May music, - take part if you have time. The Easter Oratorio is in prep. I don't know an open Bach cantata nom. - What would you "all" say about Satie? ... what he did before composing? ... that he won some prize? See project Classical music about making the article GA which would make the possibility real. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:55, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

Erik Satie, commas

Thank you for your feedback. I would like to respectfully clarify that, according to standard UK English grammar conventions, it is correct and advisable to include a comma after introductory time phrases at the beginning of a sentence, such as “In 1878,”. This comma serves to improve readability by marking a natural pause and clearly separating the introductory phrase from the main clause.

This practice is endorsed by numerous authoritative style guides, including those published by Cambridge and Oxford. Omitting the comma in such cases may reduce clarity or hinder the smooth flow of the sentence.

Should you wish, I would be happy to provide references to these style guides for further clarification.

Und ich würde dir auch den gut gemeinten Rat geben, mal den PC auszuschalten und etwas Abstand von Wikipedia zu nehmen. Deine Aktivitätsfrequenz hier sieht nicht gesund aus.

--LordRapture (talk) 10:43, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

: Well, who am I to talk about English commas. I just observe that authors I respect often revert these commas as not needed, - compare Debussy ({{diff|Claude Debussy|1070207029||example}}). The two people were friends, and readers going from one to the other might be astonished by different style. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:51, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::Just because the people you follow remove these commas doesn’t mean it’s correct. I even missed a comma in Erik Satie’s article myself, which I’ve now added. Look to those who know what they’re doing. Grammar and punctuation are my strengths—that’s what I correct. LordRapture (talk) 11:29, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
