File:Information.svg Hello, I'm Doug Weller. Wikipedia is written by people who have a wide diversity of opinions, but we try hard to make sure articles have a neutral point of view. Your recent edit to :Ilhan Omar seemed less than neutral and has been removed. If you think this was a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Doug Weller talk 14:53, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

I welcome an opportunity to communicate with you and thank you for volunteering to take the time to write comment to which I am replying. Politically, though a registered Democrat I am "Switzerland" when it comes to Wikipedia postings. I am omvery interested in good government where monies are not paid (legally or not), as facts reported by mainstream news sources that have cooroborated them, to spouses or kids of candidates, be it President or a Congress person. I did not write about anything that was not acknowledged by all involved. Did not the new husband receive the hundreds of thousands from new wife (who was Congress person)? Did not they both deny they were having a social and intimate relationship only to marry each other within a few months of denials? I am unlikely to further pursue (as my main areas of Wikipedia are not politics) but am disappointed that non disputed facts of concern to all voters and/or readers are hidden. I hate when Republicans or Democrats in Congress pay their spouses. I hope this one day is against the law. For now it is legal BUT should be disclosed. Image:Information.svg Hello. Some of your recent genre changes, such as the one you made to :University of Pennsylvania, have conflicted with our neutral point of view and/or verifiability policies. While we invite all users to contribute constructively to Wikipedia, we urge all editors to provide reliable sources for edits made. When others disagree, we recommend you seek consensus for certain edits by discussing the matter on the article's talk page. When your edit summary claims "Added back in with additional citations..." I expect to see some additional citations. I do not see that you have ever added any citations to this article, and only one to List of University of Pennsylvania people. Please follow the links above to learn about citing sources. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 14:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

I find a summary of a list of dozens of people helpful. Thus, the citation is simply to the list so the next person does not have to do what I did and count how many generals and whether any of them were significant such as being the founders of the Marine Corps and Coast Guard (for which I did provide citations). I do need to figure out how to make footnotes and apologize for not being able to do so unless I copy from another part of Wikipedia. Thanks for going to mentor me in my desire to help society learn facts about issues if interest to me and I hope others. OneMoreByte (talk) 16:06, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

:See Help:Referencing for beginners. If you copy text from one article to another you must state what article you copied from in your edit summary. Doug Weller talk 16:35, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

:Hi, OneMoreByte. Thanks for answering. The problem with adding counts of generals, admirals, etc., based on the contents of Wikipedia is two-fold: (1) there is no place on the page you're adding them that say where the info came from (the mention of "citations" in your edit summaries lead us to expect a pointer to some book, magazine, website or newspaper; you did this well for Pezavia O'Connell at List of University of Pennsylvania people); and (2) the WP pages themselves, which you seem to be using upon which to base your counts, have themselves no citations. So we can't even be sure (based on what is currently on these two articles) that Samuel Nicholas was ever at Penn, or founded the USMC, , or that Harris Hull went to Penn, was a general, or was even in the Air Force. So the statement of "28 generals" is highly suspect. It appears to be coming out of thin air.

:It's not all your fault, of course, that these List pages are so poorly referenced. They tend to start that way, then get worse. :-( What we really need, is the addition of references for all the claims on the article (ha ha), then you can summarize from that with no problems. Maybe you can go to the WP-pages of the relevant alumni and copy the refs from those articles, assuming they actually confirm the info claimed. Until then, I feel the obligation to revert the addition of {{em|further}} unsourced content, so the page doesn't get any worse. Of course, if you have a separate reliable source that say Penn graduated 28 alumni who became generals, that's be satisfactory, too.

:And don't worry about the formatting too much. I and others can help fix that, as long as the citation info is available. I'm just not promising to spend the time looking for these cites myself. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 18:50, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed explanation. In short, I think I now understand the logic, which is that since the list is suspect, the summary is suspect.

However, in case of the founder of the Marine Corps being a Penn Alum and the 5 medal of Honor recipients such is well documented in their own Wikipedia entry. Hence I will delete the number of generals and limit the prefatory section to the founder of Marines (as mentioned above) and Coast Guard (as Law creating the Coast Guard is named after Penn Medical alum founder who became US congressman) as shown in Wikipedia. If I still failed your counsel, please feel free to remove again and I will NOT reinsert. Thanks again for all that you do for Wikipedia and society. OneMoreByte (talk) 23:29, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Please note that Wikipedia page for Samuel Nicholas does cite him having graduated Penn, then known as College of Philadelphia

"Nicholas was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1744, the youngest of three, to Anthony and Mary (Shute Cowman) Nicholas. His father was a blacksmith. and his uncle was Attwood Shute, the Mayor of Philadelphia (1756–1758). Nicholas was educated at the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania), and was a Freemason who belonged to a Masonic Lodge that met at Tun Tavern." Do I need to provide additional citation if Wikipedia entry for Samuel Nicholas already has done so? OneMoreByte (talk) 23:36, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

:Yes. Every potentially dubious claim needs to be referenced (so it can be verified by any reader) every place it appears (well, except for the lead of an article where the claim is reffed down below). So if we claim, e.g., that Elizabeth II is the oldest monarch ever, we need to provide reference citations on every page we claim it, not just on "her" article page. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 02:30, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. I will now try to always employ this citation rule (using my nascent footnoting or parenthetical skills). Please continue to 'bust me' and delete my mistake if I miss my goal. OneMoreByte (talk) 05:24, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

Image:Information.svg Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from :University of Pennsylvania into :History of rugby union in the United States. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{tl|copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa (talk) 13:14, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

If you look at the history of both entries you will see that I also wrote most of the portion of Penn entry I copied. When I copied and pasted it I modified it to suit the new context of history of rugby union. OneMoreByte (talk) 05:24, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

:The same problem on List of University of Pennsylvania people; you have copied from other Wikipedia articles such as A. Leo Levin without providing attribution. Also, when copying, please be sure to bring along the supporting citations. List of University of Pennsylvania people currently has numerous error messages (in red) in the References section where the citations are missing. — Diannaa (talk) 11:39, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Though I copied original list, I then edited almost every entry (and my goal over coming weeks is to edit each entry) to provide info that improves the list by providing citations and adding relevant info. My goal is to recheck each if the cuations and correct any that are weak. This is a multi step process. OneMoreByte (talk) 12:39, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

I promise to complete all my proofing and editing by end of this year. OneMoreByte (talk) 12:40, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

:Each time you copy text from one article to another, you have to provide attribution in your edit summary, even if you intend to later edit it. Attribution is required by the terms of our license.— Diannaa (talk) 21:47, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks. I will do so going forward. OneMoreByte (talk) 02:53, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Image:Information.svg Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in :University of Pennsylvania, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please read MOS:SECTIONHEAD and do not create lengthy, title-case section headings in the future. I am not employed by Penn nor am I employed by City of Philadelphia but I benefit psychically and emotionally and indirectly economically when Penn and Philadelphia prosper. I love college sports, especially those connected with Philly. That being said I am a firm believer in and adhere to the five fundamental principles of Wikipedia that have been summarized by an article I have reviewed from time to time to make sure I am following Wikipedia policies and guidelines. I welcome your reading my comments and deleting those you think do not adhere to the five "pillars". You and other Wikipedia editors have been invaluable teachers from whom I have learned much.

Images in the middle of text

I have reverted your last edit to University of Pennsylvania. Instead of placing them just before a paragraph, as is customary, you moved two images into the middle of a paragraph, one of them to the middle of a sentence. I don't know what you see on your smart phone or whatever you're using to edit and view that article, but I wish you would make the effort to check the effects of your edit. I absolutely cannot believe that the smart phone display is so lousy that you can't discern that a sentence is interrupted midway through. That means, that you once again haven't bothered to look at your work. It would be even better of course, if you would use the Show preview function before you publish. Does your device offer that? I'm not sure what Wikipedia offers its mobile editors. But if you don't have that or can't find it, please at least look at the bits (paragraphs, images, references, footnotes) you've changed to see if anything looks a bit (or seriously) wrong. Thanks,— JohnFromPinckney (talk) 15:23, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Lillie Langtry

Please can you explain {{diff2|1157709418|your recent edit}} to St Saviour, Jersey? Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 13:22, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

:I added to St Saviour, Jersey

:".....Connétable, the supreme commander of the French Army" as I had not read Connétable prior to this entry. I looked it up and found it in a Wikipedia Affiliate. I figured I would save other people time so they did not have to click on hyperlink . In general, I defer to people with more experience than me (such as you) on Wikipedia. Please feel free to revert change I made and explain why. Perhaps the hyperlink is enough? Thanks for educating me OneMoreByte (talk) 17:45, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

::The link you added to Connétable is a disambiguation page, which offers four possible meanings of the word. It seems you have made an assumption that the meaning in this context is the fourth one, Constable of France. Was that a guess? The second meaning, Connétable (Jersey and Guernsey) is specific to Jersey and is the correct one.

::You should almost never link from an article to a disambiguation page - see WP:INTDABLINK to learn why.

::Please don't add information to an article that you don't know enough about, and certainly never guess the meaning of something and then include that assumption in an encyclopedia. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 18:15, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

:::Thanks for educating me. I made a mistake. I apologize to you and everyone who read it during the day or two that it was posted. I am usually careful about disambiguation. I did not see alternative meanings. Please forgive me. OneMoreByte (talk) 21:25, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Hopefully helpful hints

Hello, OneMoreByte. I noticed your recent edit here to the List of University of Pennsylvania people, in which you tried to add references for Henry Galbraith Ward (and thank you!). I hope you won't consider this condescending of me, but I'd like to offer some hints of how that edit could have been even better.

  1. The citation you added was not really complete, and so, not as helpful as it could have been. If you had gone to that page (did you?), you would have found that you had to at least click on the "W", and then scroll a lot, or enter Henry Galbraith Ward in the search box. THe citation shouzld guide people to the smallest, easiest-to-view source material, so they can verify for themselves the stated claims. In this case, you might have pointed to https://www.fjc.gov/history/judges/ward-henry-galbraith, a page just for him, with all the goodies we've mentioned in our list. I've now added this myself.
  2. You surely didn't {{em|really}} last verify this information on January 19, 2013, and then hold back the source citation for 11 1/2 years. Right? That's what the {{para|access-date}} parameter says: that you looked at the source {{em|then}} and verified the claim(s).
  3. There's no need to enter the exact same reference twice on a page, ever, and certainly not twice in the same entry. The "class of 1870" bit is covered by the same reference citation as the "Second Circuit (1907–1924)" bit which immediately follows it. So, if you've got one good source which covers everything in the entry (name, DOB/DOD, school[s] and class year[s], claim to fame), then you can put it at the end of the entry and let it cover the whole thing.
  4. When you {{em|do}} find a need to re-use a reference citation, you can name them, and you need only fully specify the details in one instance. See the guidance at WP:NAMEDREFS.
  5. This one is separate, because it's a stylistic issue and has nothing to do with reference citations, but: there's no need to capitalize "class of..." info on that list. It looks weird when some entries have "Class of..." and others "class of...", but "class" is a common noun here so the small "c" is appropriate.

Again, OneMoreByte, I hope you will not feel offended that I offer this unsolicited help. I hope it makes your editing easier and more constructive. Your work is very much appreciated. If you have any reply, please make it here; I have this page on my watchlist so I will surely see it (assuming I'm active, healthy, etc.).

Happy editing, — JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 17:47, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
