Help

I've seen people with lots of different types of userpages. How do I personalize the font and colors on my userpage?--Panic!outU've Been Discoed! 20:32, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Userboxes

This [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Userboxes] will help format your userboxes into a table. For userboxes, go here: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:PrefixIndex/User:UBX].

There's a whole list of userboxes. When you find one you like, click "edit page" and then, copy everything from the

to the
, leaving out the area that says Category:example.

You can also find userboxes by navigating to other users' pages. When you find a userbox on someone's page that you like, copy the code and put it on your own. Or you could join a WikiProject or Group and get codes.

Hope that helps! If you've got any more questions, don't hesitate to ask! Oh, and here's the code for "why is the rum gone?" :

{{User:UBX/Pirates2}}

Just copy and paste that and it should work. I completely agree with you on the whole "why is the rum gone?" thing - I say it all the time as well! BlackPearl14Pirate Lord-ess 03:37, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

:Here's another pirate userbox you might like: {{tlu|User:Xenocidic/Pirate}}. yarr! xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 17:13, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Adoption offer

{{tl|adoptoffer|Excirial|month=May 2008}}

Hello panic!out :)

i see you have an open request to be adopted, and i would like to close that request by offering adoption to you. Personally i am mainly doing maintenance work such as checking new pages and removing vandalism, but i can also help in case you got questions about article creation, wiki syntax, wikipedia rules et cetera. No matter what, i am always availible if you got any kind of (Wikipedia related) question, so if you need help, just say so :)

Kind regards Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 20:34, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Second adoption

I don't think a second adoption is necessary. But if you ever need me you know where to find me = ).

Adoption

Hello, Excirial, I accept your adoption offer. Basically all I want to know is how things on Wikipedia work, especially uploading files; I learn best by experiencing so direct links are helpful. Thank you very much!--Panic!outU've Been Discoed! 20:29, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

: Then hello what else can i say then "Hello, Hi, and Thanks for letting me adopt you!". Welcome, Welcome, Welcome. And lets get started :).

: Files that can be uploaded on Wikipedia are mainly images that accompany the articles. There are two different ways to upload images. The first way is to use the upload wizard, which can be found at WP:Upload. The wizard allows you to easily add an image by pre-adding the appropriate template to the image itself based upon what kind of image is being uploaded. Once the correct type had been selected, you will be directed to the upload form.

::* In this form, the first thing to do is press Browse and select the file you want to upload from your local PC.

::* Then, type a Destination Filename. This is the name where the file can be accessed at.

::* Following that, fill in the summary as far as you can. If you cannot fill in a certain field either remove it or leave or blank

::* Last, select the License Type. Note that adding a correct license is important! If the file remains without license, or the image doesn't comply to Wikipedia:Image use policy it is likely to be removed.

::* Once done, press Upload File

: Presto, you are done. You can now add the image to a page by adding two brackets with the image between it, like this: Image:Choco_chip_cookie.jpg. Note that in this case i added two nowiki tags, which prevent wikipedia from converting the code to an image (Rather hard to see what i typed otherwise, don't you think? :))

: Well, so much for this i think. If you need any further explanation on this or anything else, ask away i would say! :) Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 20:49, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Panic_Poster_2008.jpg

Image:Ambox warning.svg

Thanks for uploading :Image:Panic_Poster_2008.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{tlx|di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on [{{fullurl:Special:Contributions|target={{PAGENAMEE}}&namespace=6}} this link]. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 06:17, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

    Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{tl|motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:22, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

    ; Novel-related news

    • Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), has become Penguin Books fastest selling hardcover fiction title. It is the latest installment in the book series about British secret agent James Bond and was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of late Bond creator Ian Fleming's birthday on May 28, 1908.
    • Me Cheeta: the Autobiography, written by a ghostwriter, is the autobiography of Cheeta the Chimp who is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest recorded non-human primate at the age of 76. He has appeared in various movie roles which included twelve Tarzan movies and even battled addiction to alcohol and cigars. The book is not published until October 1, but judges for the 2008 Guardian First Book Award were sent a early version and were so impressed that they have included it on the 10-strong longlist.
    • Stephenie Meyer, who is listed by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people of 2008, has decided not to continue with writing her draft for Midnight Sun after 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript were leaked on the internet.
    valign="top" style="border: 1px gray solid; padding: 1em;" |

    ; Current debates

    • Categories for Discussion has a series of discussions about whether to categorize certain specific types of fictional characters: double agents, dictators, characters with eidetic memory, etc. Advice from any Novels project members would be valuable in assisting them.
    • WikiProject Media franchises aims to help editors with the coordination of articles within the thousands of media franchises which exist and has requested input from our members. They are currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in our Novel project, they would like to get opinions before implimenting any changes.

    Orphaned non-free media (Image:Taylor lautner.jpg)

25px Thanks for uploading :Image:Taylor lautner.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:26, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

    • {{user|Yllosubmarine}} has been a member of the Novels WikiProject for nearly two years, and a coordinator since May. Aside from her work outside the project (including four FAs and six GAs in various areas), she has been active in the Project's Assessment and Peer Review departments. She hopes to continue in these roles as well as help encourage more activity and community research within the Project. With the upcoming coordinator election, she hopes that others will volunteer to become more active in their roles as Project members so that we can continue to provide quality articles to the readers of this encyclopedia.

    ; From the Outreach Department

On the advice of Coordinator Maria, the newsletter is now only distributed to active listed members of the Novels Project. A new section has started with this issue called 'In Focus', which will feature various members and task forces each month.

Members are requested to post any news items to the Tip Line (found above) to make sure it reaches the next newsletter before closing date, which is always the last day of the preceding month. Any task force news should be added by the coordinator of that task force. Having news items helps inform members of what is happening at the various task forces and so can be a way of encouraging more membership and participation.

Editors are required to assist with the newsletter for Task Force News and Peer Reviews & Assessments News, which involves the gathering of news items from the main project and the various task forces. These positions may be applied for at the Job Centre.

    ; Member in Focus

    • Hi, I have been around this project for quite some time now. Bit of a hiatus earlier this year, but back now just contributing. The Novels WikiProject wasn't started by me but my interest in the subject initially attracted me to what was here. It has developed substantially in the last few years and now takes in all forms of Narrative Prose Fiction within its scope. We are about the content not the format of the prose so WP:Books differs a little in that an implied format is entailed; also they can also focus more clearly on non-fiction. WP:Literature are the "new boys on the block" and are a little more focused on the "quality" aspects of literature, and again they have less emphasis on pure fiction and the prose aspect. Our biggest problem is to maintain a certain focus of interest across such a broad subject area and we need workers who can develop task forces, teams for assessment, teams for peer review and so much more. "So much to do, so little time, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late" to misquote from Alice in Wonderland.

    Speedy deletion of [[:File:Teddy-geiger.jpg]]

Image:Ambox warning_pn.svg A tag has been placed on :File:Teddy-geiger.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image with an unknown source or an unknown copyright status which has been tagged as such for more than 7 days, and it still lacks the necessary information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{tl|hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. • Coordinators election. An election has been long overdue, and therefore one will begin shortly. If you wish to stand, please put your name in by June 28, when voting will start. Members are encouraged to vote for the candidate they wish to support by July 21 at the Coordinator Elections. The Ed17 has decided not to stand for re-election. His work as Assistant Coordinator, along with Kevinalewis, since the last elections in October is highly appreciated by all members of the project.
    • The Novels Project now has 128 active members.
    • 17 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only fill a position for a short time.
    • The His Dark Materials task force has been set up, and the role of coordinator has been undertaken by Pmlinediter.

    ; Member in Focus

    • Hi, I have been a member of this project for a few months now, and after finally gotten to grips with Wikipedia I have decided to take on the role of writing this newsletter (currently by myself, but any help would be appreciated) with some helpful tips from The Ed17. After undertaking this I realise why it was so difficult to keep it going. I will, however, persevere. From the members, I would encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, and take up roles at the Job Centre. The project has struggled recently, and I am hoping to try and revive it. If, with the publication of this newsletter, there are a couple of things that aren't quite up-to-date (like the Collaboration part), you can be certain I am working on it. I will be trying to get a newsletter out on around the 21st of every month. Finally, thanks for the help Ed. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

    ; From the Outreach Department

This is my first attempt at the newsletter, and I hope it at least gets close to the previous high standards set by Kevinalewis and The Ed17. I will once again encourage you to vote in the Coordinator elections, as I hope it could be the springboard to revitalise the project. I'll keep working on the newsletter, partially because I like the stress, and partially because we need it to get members and would-be members interested. Hopefully the start of great things. Regards, Alan.

    • Because there has been little activity on our Collaboration page for a long time, I have made an executive decision, and chosen The Tin Drum as our Collaboration of the month.
All members are asked to assist where they can.
The next collaboration is due for selection on 21 July, 2009 so nominate and vote.
