Talk to me, Andy Mabbett

  • If you post a message on this page, I'll reply on this page to avoid fragmenting the discussion.
  • If I've left you a message on your talk page, I will be watching it, so please reply there rather than here (but do feel free to drop a copy of {{tl|Talkback}} here).
  • If appropriate, I will move discussion from here to the relevant article's talk page, so that anyone interested can join in.
  • If you want to start a new discussion thread, please start it at the bottom of the page. Better still, use the "new section" tab next to the "edit this page" tab, or the link at the foot of this section, either of which will do that automatically.
  • Please do not make links from within section headings.
  • Inaccessible HTML (coloured text, "small" tags, etc.) will be removed from this page on sight. Broken heading or list structures will be fixed.
  • Please sign and date your entries by inserting four tildes (~~~~) at the end.
  • [{{SERVER}}{{localurl:{{NAMESPACE}}:{{PAGENAME}}|action=edit§ion=new}} Start a new discussion.]

"It's OK to remove your own /unanswered/ Qs"

I did that once and got formally "warned".... see here, User_talk:Iljhgtn/Archive_2025#April 2025. We might want to notify @Cordless Larry then if this is right. That editor was under the impression that, "It's standard practice, as with other discussion pages, to leave answered comments to be archived." Iljhgtn (talk) 21:18, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Iljhgtn No; you say you removed your question there because it had been answered. As you quote above, I said it's ok to remove your own unanswered questions. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:26, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

::I see the difference. Thank you for clarifying that. @Cordless Larry, please disregard the ping then. Iljhgtn (talk) 21:27, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

Archives on Teahouse

Can you explain why did you manually archive threads and posts on Teahouse? What bring you to archive these talk posts? AmazingWikis4386 (talk) 20:11, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

What is the meaning of "WS" ?

Hello ! I read one of your {{Diff|Wikipedia:Teahouse|prev|1291200841|edit}} and I'd like to know if WS = Whitespace.

I'd like to know what is the problem and if you consider that I did acted acted in violation of a "policy" or a "guideline".

I don't understand what is wrong with my edit and I try to understand what is the mistake. Anatole-berthe (talk) 21:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

:Yes, "whitespace". You don't need to put double line-breaks between each part of an indented comment. Note that no-one else on the page - or any other - does so. This is particularly important on The Teahouse, where we need to demonstrate to new editors the right way to do things. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:36, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks you for your answer but there are something that I didn't understood.

::Is this wrote somewhere we should not do this or this is a non-written custom ? Anatole-berthe (talk) 00:52, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

:::It's the community norm.

:::Conversely, where is it written that you should do it? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:05, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

::::Now , I did understood that this is not written somewhere because this is a "community norm".

::::When I said "non-written custom" , I was referring to the term "community norm".

::::Thanks for your time and yours explanations ! Anatole-berthe (talk) 10:13, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Language tags

Hi, any reason for removing language tags from references, for example here [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Andrew_Norfolk&diff=next&oldid=1290945977&diffonly=1] ? cagliost (talk) 21:31, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

:Compare:

:; {{cite book |title=Example |language=en }}

:: {{cite book |title=Example |language=en }}

:; {{cite book |title=Example }}

:: {{cite book |title=Example }}

:; {{cite book |title=Example |language=fr }}

:: {{cite book |title=Example |language=fr }}

:It's written somewhere (MOS, possibly) that English and its variants (such as en-GB) should not be stated in that parameter, but I can't put my hand on the link at the moment. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:04, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks. I see it is implied by "Template:Cite news", which states the language tag is to be used to cite foreign language sources. By implication, it is not necessary for English-language sources. cagliost (talk) 15:02, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

:::From the documentation at {{tl|Cite web}} and other citation templates: {{tq|Because cs1|2 templates are often copied from en.wiki to other wikis, the use of language codes is preferred so that language names render in the correct language and form, e.g. espagnol at a French-language wiki instead of the English word "Spanish".}} Leaving {{para|language|en}} in place, even though it does not display anything, is considered helpful to editors who translate articles for Wikipedias in other languages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:04, 20 May 2025 (UTC)
