Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Despite its wide reach, content on Wikipedia suffers from the bias of its editors: white, technically inclined, English-speaking men that live in developed, majority-Christian countries. This represents an alarming absence of voices in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

In an effort to change this, the Jake is organizing a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Saturday, May 6th, 1 - 5 pm. Our mission is to bring together diverse communities to participate in Wikipedia editing, and improve its coverage of queer people and women of color in the arts.

We will provide childcare, snacks, and tutorials for the beginner editor.

Bring your laptop, power-cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

RSVP at and stay tuned to our [https://www.facebook.com/events/439840896369858/ Facebook page] for updates.

What: Improving Wikipedia's coverage on queer and women artists of color

When: Saturday, May 6, 1-5pm

Where: [https://www.facebook.com/JacobLawrenceGallery/ Jacob Lawrence Gallery], Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, WA 98105

Who: People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.

What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon: Met Open Access Initiative is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's first edit-a-thon, being hosted on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Thomas J. Watson Library at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The Met is excited to make available over 375,000 images of public domain artworks for contribution to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse collection onsite and remotely. The event is a key marker too of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's first Wikimedian-in-Residence program, with resident Richard Knipel (User:Pharos), along with Wikimedia NYC. We invite you to help enhance Wikimedia communities and platforms with open access images from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The event requires pre-registration. Simple diff

Hi Sage. A few months back I added [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Categories/Reading#Simple_diff a request for a simple diff] to the community wishlist but was unsuccessful. Do you know if anyone is working on something like this anywhere in WMF or WikiEd? --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 14:16, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

:Anthonyhcole: I don't know of anyone working on this, although I like the concept. It's not part of the Community Tech team's accepted projects, but you could propose it again in the next round.--ragesoss (talk) 16:14, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

::Thanks, Sage. I need this for an expert-review project I'm working on - so readers can easily see how an article has evolved since it passed review. Can I ask you some general questions about Wiki Ed? --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 01:51, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

:::James Forrester thinks WMF technical might be able to produce something like this in a year or so. [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jdforrester_(WMF)#Simple_diff] Which is pleasing. {{=)}} --Anthonyhcole (talk · contribs · email) 06:35, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at [https://www.acehotel.com/newyork Ace Hotel New York] hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Tiffany

Hi there. Someone recently pointed out that a photo you uploaded of a stained glass window in Battell Chapel at Yale had been misnamed. :File:Yale Battell Chapel Tiffany window.jpg is in fact a window made by Maitland Armstrong. (The Tiffany window is in the northwest upstairs corner of the chapel and was created in honor of Samuel Wells Williams; the window in your picture commemorated Thomas Anthony Thacher.)

I wonder if you could rename the file and alter its description? I imagine that if you are in Seattle, as above, there's no way you could provide a photo of the real Tiffany window :) - Nunh-huh 22:00, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Note that this is part of the larger [http://www.ohny.org/weekend/overview Open House New York Weekend] activities on Saturday and Sunday, when sites normally closed to the public are open for public visits and photography.

If you can, bring your camera/photos to the event, and a laptop if you'd like to engage in adding photos to articles. But this is not necessary.

For photos from last year's event, see the OHNY campaign 2016 on Wikimedia Commons.

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

::10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education

:::81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.

Thanks, and hope to see you at the museum, and/or as part of the online Wikipedia Asian Month contest!--Pharos (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

| Newsletter Nr 5, 2017-12-30, for WikiProject Genealogy (and Wikimedia genealogy project on Meta)

Participation:

This is the fifth newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise.

(To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below)

A demo wiki is up and running!

Dear members of WikiProject Genealogy, this will be the last newsletter for 2017, but maybe the most important one!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2018!

Don't want newsletters? If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add :Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page.

Cheers from your WikiProject Genealogy coordinator {{noping|Dan Koehl}}.

|Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color.

This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by [https://art.washington.edu/people/dan-paz Dan Paz], Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent.

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants. All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required! Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided. Please check the [https://www.facebook.com/events/1690413661048035/ Facebook event page] for updates.

When: Saturday, May 12th, 1-5pm

Where: [https://www.facebook.com/JacobLawrenceGallery/ Jacob Lawrence Gallery], Art Building #132, 1915 NE Chelan Ln, Seattle, Washington 98105

Who: Everyone is welcome.

What to bring: A laptop and power cord. Access to UW WiFi will be provided for non-UW affliated participants.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Triangle Arts Association in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

Interface Edit Requests - Bot Table

Hello Ragesoss, as an interface administrator I wanted to let you know that there are two pages you should consider watch-listing: Wikipedia:Interface administrators' noticeboard and User:AnomieBOT/IPERTable. The later is a bot-generated table of all outstanding interface edit requests that you may be able to handle. Thank you for your continuing support of Wikipedia! — xaosflux Talk 14:40, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

    Growth team updates #3

Welcome to the third newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

Two Growth team projects to be deployed in next two weeks

We will be deploying the "Understanding first day" and "Personalized first day" projects on Czech and Korean Wikipedias in the coming weeks. See the new project pages below for full details on the projects, and our project updates page for their progress.

    • Understanding first day: learn about the actions new editors take right after creating their accounts. We will be careful with user privacy, and we hope to share initial results in December.
    • Personalized first day: learn about new editors' objectives by adding some optional questions to the new editor’s registration process, and personalizing their onboarding. We hope to share initial results in December.

    Third Growth team project begins

    • Focus on help desk: direct newcomers to the local help desks where they can ask questions to help them make their first edits. We hope to have an initial experiment running in December.

    Best practices for helping newcomers

We are going to direct newcomers to help desks. But what's the best way to reply to a newcomer there? We have gathered some best practices for successful interactions, based on community experiences and some external documentation. The page has also been reviewed by some experienced community members who suggested some changes. That page is now [https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Growth%2FCommunity%2FHow+to+work+with+newcomers+on+help+desk&action=page&filter= open for translations]. Comments and suggestions are still welcome!

We are still looking for volunteers

Do you want to participate to our experiments? We are looking for new communities to work with us (especially a new mid-size wiki), and people to become ambassadors to help us to communicate with the different communities. Discover how you can involve yourself or your community.

Also, please share this update with your community and interested people!

    Learn more about us

You can visit our team page to find out why our team was formed and how we are thinking about new editors, and our project page for detailed updates on the projects we'll work on.

    ArbCom 2018 election voter message

{{Ivmbox|Hello, Ragesoss. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
