:Nominator's rationale: This category seems a clear case of Over Categorization, specifically Subjective inclusion criteria, as plant flower colors are often categorized differently by different people. What is clearly a blue flower to one author is a purple flower to another writer since there is no hard division between the color hues. Additionally, almost all blue/purple flowers will also have a white form, many partially blue flowers have patterns or stripes of other colors on the flowers, and/or have different colors at different stages of development. E.g. Mertensia virginica, which in addition to being blue also can have pink or white flowers. • Delete Soil pH can influence flower color; Hydrangeas are well known to produce blue flowers in more acidic soils, and to produce purple or pink flowers in more basic soils. Blue pigments in plants are mostly anthocyanins which appear in different shades depending on pH. I'm not aware of very many plants that have a response in flower color that is as strongly affected (blue to pink) by soil pH alone as hydrangeas. I am aware of more plants with anthocyanin pigments that vary dramatically in shade (blue to pink) over the course of floral development (such as Mertensia mentioned above) or vary less dramatically (blue/purple or purple/pink) among different individual plants (which could be genetically or environmentally mediated).
