| The [http://www.chemheritage.org/ Chemical Heritage Foundation] will be hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, June 20, 2013. This event is part of the Chemical Heritage Foundation's GLAM Initiative, in cooperation with WikiProject GLAM and the Wikipedian in Residence program. |
File:CHF P1000361 Chemical Heritage Foundation Exterior.jpg
If you have a favorite chemist, alchemist, or scientist help to write him or her into Wikipedian history!
The [http://www.chemheritage.org/ Chemical Heritage Foundation] is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, June 20, 2013, as part of its GLAM initiative. Use the hashtag [http://twitter.com/search?q=%23GlamCHF&src=hash #GlamCHF] on Twitter for this event.
Event Details
Members of the CHF community and guests will have an opportunity to work on Wikipedia pages of interest to them, particularly those in the areas of the history of science, chemistry, and women in science. Activities may include editing pages, creating new pages, and adding images and metadata, with a focus on CHF’s collection of women scientists. Active Wikipedians and novices are welcome. Coaching will be provided. Please bring your own laptop.
WHAT: Creating and expanding existing Wikipedia pages about the history of science, particularly chemistry, and the role of women in science, drawing on materials and resources provided by the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
WHO: Open to CHF, Wikipedian visitors, and online Wikipedian participants. The museum tour is limited to 10 non-CHF participants; please RSVP before Wednesday, 19 June 2013 to reserve a space. If you do not have any experience editing Wikipedia, please be aware that this Edit-a-Thon will build upon the "What is Wikipedia" and "Wikipedia 101" talks given at CHF and PhillyDH, rather than repeating the information presented there.
WHEN: Thursday, June 20, 2013, 12:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. E.D.T. (see the schedule below.) Snacks and drinks will be provided.
- 12:00-1.00 Visitors Tour of the museum, rare book room, and archives (meet in main lobby)
- 1.00-1.20 Orientation to the Edit-a-Thon and the target resources (Franklin Room)
- 1.20-3.00 Editing (CHF staff and Visitors)
- 3.00-4.00 Optional time; people may leave, others continue to edit, chat, or visit the museum until it closes at 4.00 p.m.
WHERE: [http://www.chemheritage.org/ Chemical Heritage Foundation] 315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106-2702 Tel: 215.925.2222. See [http://www.chemheritage.org/visit/conference-center-rental/directions.aspx Directions]. The nearest subway stop is at 2nd and Market; the nearest Metro stop is Market East Station.
WHY: By increasing the number of pages on Wikipedia about chemistry, the history of chemistry, and the role of women in chemistry, this event can help to close the Wikipedia [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gender_gap Gender Gap], and increase Wikipedia's scientific content. The Chemical Heritage Foundation has great resources in these areas, many of which are available online.
OTHER: Please bring your laptop or ipad. A limited number of ipads may be available for use by those who cannot bring their own computer to the event.
IMPORTANT: Please RSVP by adding your name to the list below AND emailing mockerbloom@chemheritage.org before Wednesday, 19 June 2013 because space is limited. If you are unable to attend, you can leave your name to receive information about possible future events.
HASHTAG: [http://twitter.com/search?q=%23GlamCHF&src=hash #GlamCHF] People are welcome to participate online at any time, not just during the on-site event.
Participants
We would love to include Wikipedians as guest coaches for the edit-a-thon, and to promote this event online under the hashtag #GlamCHF so that others can participate remotely. = Women chemists=
CHF has a strong interest in women in science. More than forty women are featured in the [http://www.chemheritage.org/research/policy-center/oral-history-program/projects/women-in-chemistry.aspx Women in Chemistry oral history project], one of several [http://www.chemheritage.org/research/policy-center/oral-history-program/projects/index.aspx Oral History Projects] at CHF. Eight women are also featured in the [http://www.chemheritage.org/discover/online-resources/women-in-chemistry/index.aspx Catalyst Series] of videos of women in chemistry. = History of Science =
CHF has information about many topics relating to the history of science. These were favorites in our brainstorming sessions.
- 16pxBakelite -- could expand or add CHF photographs to main article & list of "Other similar plastics and products"
- possible images from CHF could include bakelite objects (buttons, napkin holder, others) but NOT the bakelite oven (Bakelizer) due to copyright issues.

- Petrochemistry -- [http://www.chemheritage.org/discover/online-resources/chemistry-in-history/themes/petrochemistry-and-synthetic-polymers/index.aspx CHF] -- Wikipedia articles need work
=Articles Closely Related to CHF which might pose COI problems=
- Chemical Heritage Foundation should not be edited by CHF employees -- it could use a section outlining the history of the organization and its leaders. Currently, only founder Arnold Thackray is mentioned; the current head, Thomas R. Tritton, is to be succeeded in August by German chemist Carsten Reinhardt, author of Chemical Sciences in the 20th Century: Bridging Boundaries. [http://www.chemheritage.org/about/news-and-press/chf-in-the-media/2013-05-19-new-ceo-for-chemical-heritage-foundation-in-spectroscopynow.aspx See announcement]. It would also be desirable to add images representative of the work of the various departments (see the image uploads from CHF) and to improve the article's reference style. The [http://articles.philly.com/2012-06-10/news/32157134_1_interactive-exhibits-bank-profits-philadelphia-fed Philadelphia Inquirer] gave us a nice review last year.
- Medals Awarded : The awards program at the Chemical Heritage Foundation recognizes superior accomplishments in chemistry and related sciences. If someone else created pages for awards such as the Othmer Gold Medal, we have [http://www.chemheritage.org/visit/events/awards/index.aspx information on the recipients] of this and other awards. This list gives a subset of the most significant CHF-related award winners. Current press releases can be found at [http://www.chemheritage.org/about/news-and-press/index.aspx News and Press]; older materials may have been [http://wayback.archive-it.org/2118/20100924223922/http://64.251.202.97/ archived].
- CHF members can add information about medals received on the pages of the recipients, since this is valued information indicating notability.
- Othmer Gold Medal : Gordon Moore, James Watson, Mary Lowe Good (no photo; needs work)
- Biotechnology Heritage Award : Nancy Chang, Herbert Boyer, Francis Collins, J. Craig Venter
- Pittcon Heritage Award : George N. Hatsopoulos (no photo; needs work), Kathryn Hach-Darrow

=Images from CHF's flickr collections=
Selected image sets already released on [http://www.flickr.com/photos/chemheritage/sets/ CHF's Flickr account] could be moved to Wikimedia Commons for use in articles. Check the license on the image to see if it is under a shareable (CC-BY) license before moving. I would suggesting working with sets that involve books and objects, rather than people and events, since people attending events may have signed photograph release forms specific to that event. Flickr images may be lower resolution than the original images in the archives.

Specific Outcomes
Some people edited more than one article; some people acted primarily as coaches.
