Articles describing the participation of a nation at a specific edition of the Olympic or Paralympic Games must contain three important elements:

• An infobox template specific for that nation, where data such as medal count, flag bearers, and links to participation in other editions of the Games is quickly presented;
• A medalists section, containing a table listing all medal winners from that nation, at that specific edition;
• A results by sport section, containing results for every competitor in every sport where that nation was represented.

These main elements must follow the conventions presented hereafter, to promote layout consistency and data organization throughout the whole article series.

An infobox template, derived from {{tl|Infobox country at games}}, is transcluded at the beginning of the corresponding article's lead section. It provides a summarized table with the most important information concerning a nation's participation at the Olympic or Paralympic Games, as well as a history section allowing the navigation through its other participations.

;flagbearer

:Name of the person/people who served as flagbearer at the opening and/or closing ceremonies (e.g. flagbearer=Veronica Campbell or flagbearer=Dirk Nowitzki (opening)

;officials

:Number of officials sent by the nation to the specified Games. For example, if the total delegation was 40 people and there were 24 competitors, you would use officials=16.

;rank

:The position on the medal table. Just the figure is required (e.g. rank=8 produces 8th)

;gold

:Number of gold medals won by the nation's competitors. Default is 0, if no value is specified.

;silver

:Number of silver medals won by the nation's competitors. Default is 0, if no value is specified.

;bronze

:Number of bronze medals won by the nation's competitors. Default is 0, if no value is specified.

Note that the "Total" value is computed automatically as the sum of all three medal types.

This section, placed under a level-two heading (== Medalists == or == Medallists ==, where British English is appropriate), contains a sortable table listing all the medals and respecitive medal-winning competitors from a nation at the Games.

• The table should feature columns with the headers Medal (for the medal type won), Name (for the medal winner(s)), Sport (for the sport in which the medal winner(s) competed), Event (for the specific event where that medal was won), and Date (for the day that the medal was won).
• The Medal column should display the medals won by the use of the templates {{tl|gold medal}}, {{tl|silver medal}} and {{tl|bronze medal}}. These render sortable icon-sized images of the respective medal followed by "Gold", "Silver" or "Bronze". Do not use background colors or any other images of poorer resolution for this purpose.
• The Name column should contain the name of the medal winners through the use of {{tl|sortname}} so that the medalists are sorted by their surname (Chinese and Korean family names come first, so the template is not needed in these cases).
• For pairs or teams of small or intermediate size, list medalists in separate lines (use
) and by alphabetical order of their surname. Use {{tl|sortname}} only for the first medalist to enable sorting of the pair/team.
• For large team sports, use {{tlx|columns-list|small{{=}}y}} to display the full team roster in reduced font size (it is not necessary to use {{tl|sortname}} for the names here), and place it just after the team name, which should also be sorted and linked to its corresponding page.
• Medalists, sports and events should all be linked to their corresponding pages, even if these currently do not exist. Sports should link to the "Sport at the year Summer Olympics" page, not the general sport article, while events should link directly to the subsidiary event results page.
• Dates formats are optional ("Month Day" or "Day Month") but should be the consistent within the table. For sorting purposes, format dates using {{tl|dts}}.

Example (from Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics):

The results section for each sport where the competitors of a nation take part should have an level two heading (== Sport ==). The section should begin with a link to the main article of that sport for the Games in question, by means of the {{tl|main}} template. If available, the article on the Olympic qualification for the sport can also be added.

• Underneath these headings there should be a results table listing all athletes from the nation competing in that sport. In the case of a nation having more than six competitors in a given sport, this table may be further split into "Men" and "Women" results tables. In this case, use {{tlx|TOC limit}} in order to reduce TOC cluttering. Where this is not possible due to lower-level headings elsewhere in the article, use bold markup. i.e. use Men, not ===Men===.

• The format of the results table required will vary depending on the sport but can be in general split into three categories:
• Those where an athlete competes against an individual or team (judo, badminton, etc.);
• Those where an athlete competes against a field (athletics, swimming, etc.);
• Team sports (such as football, handball, etc.).
• More than a single athlete in a sport category, whether individual, pair, or team, must be arranged alphabetically according to their last names (Chinese, Korean, and Mongolian family names come first, so this table is not needed for these cases).

• All columns containing results or ranks should be center-aligned. The name and event columns should be left-aligned.
• Results cells integrated in columns specific for rounds:
• that did not occur in an event, should be filled with "N/A" using {{txl|n/a}}
• where the athlete received a bye, should be filled with "Bye" using {{txl|bye}}
• If an athlete qualified for a later round, a bolded "Q" should be placed at the right side of the rank (or "q" if it is a fastest loser qualification).
• Ranks should be given as a cardinal number, i.e. "13" not "13th". In the case of joint placings, display an equal sign (=) before the rank number.

• As stated for the qualification symbols, records should be denoted in the column of the appropriate result, at the right side of the value.
• World records are highlighted using template {{tlx|WR}} that produces {{WR}} (link to World record). If a world record is specific for a sport, like swimming, using {{tlx|WR|swimming}} will change the link to World records in swimming; if the previous standing record was equaled, one can use {{tlx|WR|swimming|eq{{=}}y}} that yields {{WR|swimming|eq=y}}.
• Olympic records are handled with {{tlx|OlyR}} that produces {{OlyR}}, linking to Olympic record. As mentioned for world records, using {{tlx|OlyR|swimming}} will create a new link to List of Olympic records in swimming; if the previous standing record was equaled, one can use {{tlx|OlyR|swimming|eq{{=}}y}} yielding {{OlyR|swimming|eq=y}}.
• National record marks should be designated as "NR" (bolded)
• Continental records using the appropriate abbreviation: AF = African record, AM = Americas record, AS = Asian record, EU = European record, OC = Oceanian record (all bolded)

• The names of medal-winning athletes should be bolded.
• No background colour in the athlete's row is necessary or recommended.
• The medal icons Image:Gold medal icon.svg ({{gold1}}), Image:Silver medal icon.svg ({{silver2}}) or Image:Bronze medal icon.svg ({{bronze3}}) should be placed either in the final "Rank" column or beneath the final result, if no separate column exists.

• The table should begin with "Athlete" and "Event" columns, followed by a variable number of columns for each of the competition's rounds, with the heading being the name of that round.
• Within each round column, both the opponent and result should be registered; this is denoted by a second cell at the top of the column containing "Opposition" and "Result" (use the code !style="line-height:1em"|Opposition

• The name of the opponent should be given through the use of {{tlx|flagIOCathlete}} template, but only the last name should be visible.

• Results should be recorded using a bolded "W" (won) or "L" (lost), followed by the scores for each set/timed round. The main athlete's score is always presented on the left side. Scores should always be separated by an en dash (–) and not a hyphen (-), per the Manual of Style. An en dash can be inserted through the wiki markup symbol (–) or the HTML element (–).

• The table should begin with "Athlete" and "Event" columns, followed by a variable number of columns for each of the competition's rounds, with the heading being the name of that round. These columns are further split into "Result" (other titles are possible, depending on the event) and "Rank" columns (a "Total" column may also be added if, at any stage, the results from multiple rounds are added up).
• The form of recording the rank will vary between sports, depending on how qualifiers are decided:
• For athletics, it should be the position within the heat;
• For swimming, it is the overall rank when all heats are compared.
• Additional columns may be needed (e.g. "Horse" for the name of the animal used in equestrian events)

• The results table for groups/pools should have a league-type format, with rows dedicated to each of the group teams and columns for every relevant statistics of the sport in question.
• Teams qualifying for the next round of the competition should be highlighted in green (#ccffcc).

This type of article should be included in the adequate categories:

• Category:Nations at the Olympics or Category:Nations at the Paralympics

::Replace and with the year and season, respectively, in which the Games that the article refers to took place (e.g. :Category:Nations at the 2004 Summer Paralympics)

• or
