Fortress names
There seems to be a mixture of how to translate Korean fortress names into English, both here on en.wiki and in other sources. Some article like Hwaseong Fortress keep the "seong" in English despite also appending "fortress", others like Jinjuseong don't include "fortress" in the name. Some external sources drop "seong" and use "fortress" instead, eg. [https://www.lonelyplanet.com/south-korea/gyeongsangnam-do/jinju/attractions/jinju-fortress/a/poi-sig/1428318/357416 Jinju Fortress]. Is this something where we should stick to one format, maintain mixed use but leaning to one side or another, or leave it up to individual articles and the sources chosen? :WP:KO-BUILDING There's currently guidance for that here, but the guidance is not uncontroversial. Recent discussions here and here. We may revise the guidance and WP:NCKO as a whole in near future based on the first discussion linked, but figuring out a way to do so is not so easy. Figuring out Korean romanizations and translations is very difficult; basically every decision displeases someone. seefooddiet (talk) 12:26, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
::Oh thanks, didn't know there were such recent discussions. Government sources do seem to use "fooseong fortress". I'll watch the NC-KO discussion so as not to duplicate here. CMD (talk) 12:44, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
:::If you google "fooseong fortress", this wikipedia discussion page is the only result. The name also wouldn't make any sense. --Christian140 (talk) 08:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
::::See "Foobar"; "foo" is a term used to indicate a variable, like "x". It doesn't mean we should call the page "fooseong fortress", it means using "a pattern like [something here]seong fortress" seefooddiet (talk) 08:53, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
New draft for Historic Site 396
Hello everyone, I have a new draft at Draft:Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle covering Historic Site 396. I would appreciate it if anyone has time to check it over, to make sure it is okay to go live. I'm working on a few fortresses at the moment (although I suspect this will be the most detailed?), so feedback would help with those too. Further, if anyone wants to add things, there is a lot of detail in the sources that I did feel I understood well enough to include. For example, if anyone is interested in detailed construction techniques, the water sources to the north (one still used for a temple?), or giwa tiles, there's a lot that could be added. While working on this I did come up with a number of specific points/questions I couldn't answer and would appreciate feedback on:
- How reliable are the stones restored during 1978? This question is raised in {{cite web |url=https://encykorea.aks.ac.kr/Article/E0051473 |title=제주 항파두리 항몽유적지 (濟州 缸波頭里 抗蒙遺蹟址) |publisher=Academy of Korean Studies |access-date=2025-04-10}}, and other sources also mention the 1977-1978 restoration was rushed.
- There are a few objects/places mentioned that I couldn't quite figure out the importance of. These include 고장성,{{cite web |url=http://www.jst.re.kr/upload/pdf/RC00093873.pdf |title=제주 항파두리성의 조사 성과 |author=김용덕 |publisher=제주학회 |date=2015 |access-date=2025-04-11 |language=ko}}{{rp|61}} 남문지,{{rp|69}} 등성시설의,{{rp|72–73}} 순의문, 기와가마터, and 장털 (and the 도체비꽃 flower details, should 도체비꽃 be a redlink?){{cite news |url=https://www.jejusori.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=173336 |title=황량한 항몽유적지, 그 안에는 무수한 스토리텔링이… |author=김일우 |work=Jejusori |date=2016-02-06 |access-date=2025-04-12}}
- I can't figure out exactly what is significant about the ground level of the inner fortress, and how it related to the groud level outside.{{cite web |url=http://jst.re.kr/upload/pdf/RC00093876.pdf |title=제주 항파두리 항몽 유적의 지속가능한 보존과 활용 |author1=강창화 |author2=김용덕 |author3=황석규 |publisher=제주학회 |date=2015 |access-date=2025-04-06 |language=ko}}{{rp|109}}{{rp|67}}
- Is the image in {{cite journal |author=전영준 |title=삼별초의 항파두리 토성 입거와 전략적 활용 |journal=역사민속학 |volume=47 |date=2015-03-24 |url=http://archive.jst.re.kr/upload/pdf/RC00039987.pdf |language=ko}}{{rp|210}} saying Jindo would be visible from Jeju?
- The source {{rp|214}} mentions an Aewolmokseong (애월목성). Should this be mentioned, and are there sufficient sources out there for it to be a redlink?
- Sources seem to differ a bit on the end of the battle, where the general retreated and supposedly(?) committed suicide. I can't figure out what might be legend and what is known, and from where. The details of the final battle I've written don't quite align with the Sambyeolcho Rebellion article, so I may have misunderstood something. Related to this, the information about Jangsumul Spring could use double checking.
- The site has ruins it calls the Sujeongsa Temple (수정사지), but if it's in the sources I missed it. Is this important enough to be covered?
- Should the monument be named the "Hangmong monument"?
- What is the correct name for Jeju Historic Sites (ie the 1976 designation, not the national 1997 one)?
- Any details on the recent funding proposal in [http://www.newslinejeju.com/news/articleView.html?idxno=156795][https://www.jejumaeil.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=345761][https://www.pressian.com/pages/articles/2025040806485698745]? What is the role of the Jeju Provincial Council vs the City government?
- Sources I can't access which might have additional information:

There are a lot of good photos [https://www.heritage.go.kr/heri/cul/culSelectDetail.do?pageNo=1_1_2_0&VdkVgwKey=13,03960000,50 here] of excavations, floorplans, the water sources and spring, and various artifacts, that I think are under KOGL1. If someone more familiar with KOGL could check, that would be appreciated. Thanks for any help, CMD (talk) 13:16, 13 April 2025 (UTC) CMD (talk) 13:16, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
:Most of your questions are a bit detailed and would involve research; would help but currently working on too many other projects atm 😅
:For KOGL, some of the photos appear to be KOGL1, but some aren't (I think the older ones aren't). For it to be KOGL1 it just needs to have the little person icon. If there's more icons (the cross through the money bag, cross through the horseshoe looking thing) it's not KOGL1. The ones that are KOGL1 are safe to upload to Commons. seefooddiet (talk) 05:43, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
:It's more than ready to be a full article btw, I think it's probably one of the strongest articles on Korean fortresses on enwiki at present. It's even stronger than articles for major fortresses like Namhansanseong. seefooddiet (talk) 05:49, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
::I'm hopeful the questions can be mostly answered by the sources I've found. Thanks for the vote of confidence, you mentioned the need for DYKs in the archive so I'll think of something. I'm halfway through a Hwanhaejangseong article, so I'm considering a joint nom. That said, I do like "Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle" in English, I think a hook focusing on just that name already elicits curiosity. CMD (talk) 08:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

I've created Hwanhaejangseong to sort of complete the Hanpaduseong article, as sources suggest Hwanhaejangseong was symbolically a 3rd wall. That said, I'm a bit confused on to how exactly it was designed, whether it had one or more walls and keeps and so on. Briefly mentioned in [https://www.heritage.go.kr/heri/cul/culSelectDetail.do?pageNo=1_1_2_0&VdkVgwKey=23,00490300,50] and [https://www.heritage.go.kr/heri/cul/culSelectDetail.do?pageNo=1_1_2_0&VdkVgwKey=23,00490200,50]. Important: this RfC impacts a significant majority of Korea-related pages. Encourage you to participate in or follow the discussion.
See Template talk:Korean/auto#RfC: Use of this and another template on an RfC to gradually phase out the {{tl|Korean}} and {{tl|Infobox Korean name}} templates and replace them with new versions that feature semi-automatic romanization and several other new features. seefooddiet (talk) 20:18, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
