"Word to the Mutha!" is a song co-written and performed by American contemporary R&B group Bell Biv DeVoe and co-written and produced by Wolf & Epic (Richard Wolf and Bret "Epic" Mazur). It originally appeared on their debut studio album Poison under the title "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny (Word to the Mutha)!",{{cite web|url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/poison-mw0000141841|title=Poison - Bell Biv DeVoe {{!}} Songs, Reviews, Credits, Awards {{!}} AllMusic|work=AllMusic|publisher=All Media Network|access-date=April 16, 2015}} but the title was shortened and a remixed version of the song was issued as the only official single from the group's remix album WBBD-Bootcity!: The Remix Album. The song features vocals from Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill. It was the first recorded song to feature all six members of New Edition.{{cite web|url=http://www.honolulupulse.com/2012/06/review-new-edition-puts-star-power-on-display|title=Review: New Edition puts star power on display - Honolulu Pulse - Hawaii Entertainment, Food and NightlifeHonolulu Pulse – Hawaii Entertainment, Food and Nightlife|work=Honolulu Star-Advertiser|publisher=Black Press|last=Goldstein|first=Sjarif|date=June 18, 2012|access-date=April 16, 2015}} Brown, Tresvant and Gill are credited separately on the single, rather than collectively as New Edition.{{cite web|url=http://cdn.discogs.com/2A-nP9mjAMPrfj5FaNPK0k2vOBI=/fit-in/497x467/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(96)/discogs-images/R-544302-1210436565.jpeg.jpg|title=Image|work=Discogs|publisher=Zink Media|access-date=April 16, 2015}}
The song samples "A Star in the Ghetto" by Average White Band and "The Jam" by Graham Central Station.{{cite web|url=http://www.whosampled.com/Bell-Biv-DeVoe/Word-to-the-Mutha!-(Remix)|title=Word to the Mutha! A music video was filmed in and around the Orchard Park Housing Projects, in the Roxbury section of Boston, where five of the six (excluding Johnny Gill) New Edition members grew up.
