Area code 406 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for the entire U.S. state of Montana. It has been Montana's only area code since the American Telephone and Telegraph Company created a nationwide telephone numbering plan in 1947.

As of 2013, 47 carriers served 1.7 million lines in Montana. All but two wireline providers support local number portability (the exceptions are small rural independents Hot Springs Telephone Company and Northern Telephone Cooperative). Sufficient available codes for new exchanges in the 406 area code exist to meet anticipated demand until 2031; number pooling has been implemented in response to increased demand and inefficient use of 406 numbering resources.{{cite web |last1=Inbody |first1=Kristen |title=In Montana, it's 406 exclusively until 2031 |url=https://www.greatfallstribune.com/story/news/2017/11/27/406-area-code-in-montana-extended/898459001/ |website=Great Falls Tribune |publisher=www.greatfallstribune.com |access-date=13 June 2023 |ref="In Montana, it's 406 exclusively until 2031" |date=27 Nov 2017}}{{cite web|url=http://www.fcc.gov/document/montana-psc-granted-authority-implement-mandatory-number-pooling|title=Montana PSC Granted Authority to Implement Mandatory Number Pooling|date=12 December 2015|website=fcc.gov|access-date=7 May 2018|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171210160211/https://www.fcc.gov/document/montana-psc-granted-authority-implement-mandatory-number-pooling|archive-date=10 December 2017}}

Prior to October 2021, area code 406 had telephone numbers assigned for the central office code 988. In 2020, 988 was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permit seven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.{{cite web|url=https://nationalnanpa.com/pdf/PL_556.pdf|date=January 8, 2021|publisher=North American Numbering Plan Administrator |title=Transition to 10-digit dialing (for 988 as 3-digit access to National Suicide Prevention Hotline)|access-date=March 9, 2021}}

For many Montanans, area code 406 has become an unofficial symbol of the state.{{cite web |last1=Stetz |first1=Mike |title=406, more than just an area code |url=https://www.montanarightnow.com/helena/406-more-than-just-an-area-code/article_20dc2d9c-e7ca-11e9-b7db-8b45e61949a8.html |website=NonStop Local |publisher=ABC FOX |access-date=17 March 2025}} Some Montanans celebrate April 6 as "406 Day," an unofficial holiday celebrating the state.{{cite web |last1=Juneau |first1=Brianna |title=Celebrating Montana on '406 Day' |url=https://www.krtv.com/news/montana-and-regional-news/montana-is-celebrated-on-406-day |website=3KRTV |publisher=Scripps Media Inc. |access-date=17 March 2025}}
