The greenbuls are a group of birds within the bulbul family Pycnonotidae, found only within Africa. They are all largely drab olive-green above, and paler below, with few distinguishing features.

The "aberrant greenbuls" of the genera Bernieria and Xanthomixis are actually Malagasy warblers.{{Cite journal|last1=Cibois|first1=Alice|last2=Slikas|first2=Beth|last3=Schulenberg|first3=Thomas S.|last4=Pasquet|first4=Eric|date=2001|title=An endemic radiation of Malagasy songbirds is revealed by mitochondrial DNA sequence data|url=http://www.molecularevolution.org/resources/references/files/cibois_et_al_2001.pdf|journal=Evolution|volume=55 |issue=6|pages=1198–1206|doi=10.1554/0014-3820(2001)055[1198:AEROMS]2.0.CO;2|via=Internet Archive Wayback Machine|pmid=11475055|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060521183015/http://www.molecularevolution.org/resources/references/files/cibois_et_al_2001.pdf|archive-date=2006-05-21}} To recognize this, they are also called bernieria and tetrakas rather than greenbuls. Likewise, the golden greenbul is not a typical greenbul, but apparently the representative of a distinct and ancient lineage of bulbuls, which might include the black-collared bulbul.{{Cite journal|date=2006-09-01|title=Phylogenetic relationships of the bulbuls (Aves: Pycnonotidae) based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data|journal=Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution|language=en|volume=40|issue=3|pages=687–695|doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2006.04.015|pmid=16750401|issn=1055-7903|last1=Moyle|first1=Robert G.|last2=Marks|first2=Ben D.|bibcode=2006MolPE..40..687M }} A few species within some of the genera in this group are called brownbuls or leafloves.
