Background
In March 2017, with the launch of its new Zen processors, AMD used the AM4 socket that they had previously used with their Bristol Ridge (derived from Excavator) powered Athlon X4 and some A-Series, a pin grid array (PGA) socket that they promised to support until 2020.{{cite web |last1=Castle |first1=Katherine |date=April 19, 2018 |title=AMD confirm AM4 motherboards will be supported until 2020 |url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/amd-socket-am4-motherboards-support-until-2020 |website=Rock Paper Shotgun |access-date=May 7, 2022}}

At CES 2022, AMD CEO Lisa Su unveiled the AM5 socket and the integrated heat spreader design for the upcoming Ryzen 7000 processors due in late 2022.
On May 23, 2022, AMD provided details about the AM5 socket, its corresponding motherboards, and Ryzen 7000 Series CPUs at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan.{{cite web |last1=James |first1=Dave |date=May 20, 2022 |title=Dr. Lisa Su is teasing AMD Zen 4 CPU details on Monday and Gigabyte is promising AM5 boards |url=https://www.pcgamer.com/dr-lisa-su-is-teasing-amd-zen-4-cpu-details-on-monday-and-gigabyte-is-promising-am5-boards/ |website=PC Gamer |language=en-US |access-date=May 20, 2022}} At Computex, motherboard vendors ASRock, Gigabyte and others debuted their new X670 motherboards featuring the AM5 socket.{{cite web |last1=Hill |first1=Brandon |date=May 20, 2022 |title=Gigabyte Confirms X670 AMD Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 AM5 Motherboards for Computex |url=https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/gigabyte-x670-ryzen-7000-am5-zen4-computex-2022 |website=Tom's Hardware |language=en-US |access-date=May 20, 2022}}{{cite web |last1=Tyson |first1=Mark |date=May 20, 2022 |title=Computex Organizer Confirms ASRock AMD X670E Motherboards Incoming |url=https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/asrock-amd-x670E-motherboards-computex-2022 |website=Tom's Hardware |language=en-US |access-date=May 20, 2022}}
AMD stated that it plans to support the AM5 socket for a number of years as it did with the AM4 socket.{{cite web |last1=Hagedoom |first1=Hilbert |date=January 10, 2022 |title=AMD aims for AM5 to have a similar lifespan to AM4 (5 years) |url=https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/amd-aims-for-am5-to-have-a-similar-lifespan-to-am4-(5-years).html |website=The Guru of 3D |access-date=May 7, 2022}} During the Ryzen 7000 series reveal on August 29, 2022, AMD confirmed that it would support the AM5 socket until at least 2025.{{cite web |last=James |first=Dave |date=August 29, 2022 |title=AMD plans to support the new AM5 socket through 2025 and beyond |url=https://www.pcgamer.com/amd-am5-support-thru-2025/ |website=PC Gamer |language=en-US |access-date=August 30, 2022}} At Computex 2024, AMD announced that this support period would then be extended through 2027.{{cite web |last1=Evanson |first1=Nick |title=AMD promises AM5 socket life support through to 2027 and beyond |url=https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/processors/amd-promises-am5-socket-life-support-through-to-2027-and-beyond/ |website=PC Gamer |access-date=5 June 2024 |language=en |date=3 June 2024}}

Heatsink
The AM5 socket specifies the 4 holes for fastening the heatsink to the motherboard to be placed at the corners of a rectangle with a lateral length of 54×90 mm, as well as UNC #6-32 screw threads for the backplate, identical to those of the preceding AM4 socket. Furthermore, the Z-height of the CPU package is kept the same as that of AM4, for backward compatibility of heatsinks.{{Cite web |last=Leather |first=Anthony |title=Beware Socket AM5 cooler compatibility |url=https://custompc.raspberrypi.com/articles/beware-socket-am5-cooler-compatibility |website=Custom PC |date=August 8, 2022 |language=en-US |access-date=October 19, 2022}}
Unlike AM4, the backplate on AM5 is not removable, as it also serves the purpose of securing the CPU retention mechanism for the LGA socket.{{Cite web |last=Killian |first=Zak |date=October 3, 2022 |title=How To Know If Your Existing CPU Cooler Is Compatible With AM5 For Zen 4 Builds |url=https://hothardware.com/news/is-your-cpu-cooler-compatible-with-am5-for-zen-4 |website=HotHardware |language=en-US |access-date=October 19, 2022}}
Not all existing CPU coolers from AM4 are compatible. In particular, coolers that use their own backplate mounting hardware, instead of the default motherboard-provided backplate, will not work. Some cooler manufacturers are offering upgrade kits to allow incompatible older coolers to be used on AM5.{{Cite web |last=Tyson |first=Mark |date=September 22, 2022 |title=Noctua Confirms Its AMD AM4 Compatible Coolers Will Also Support AM5 Platforms |url=https://www.tomshardware.com/news/noctua-confirms-its-amd-am4-compatible-coolers-will-also-support-am5-platforms |website=Tom's Hardware |language=en-US |access-date=October 19, 2022}}{{Cite web |date=September 5, 2022 |title=EK Reveals AM5 Compatibility Roadmap for All CPU Cooling Products |url=https://www.techpowerup.com/298565/ek-reveals-am5-compatibility-roadmap-for-all-cpu-cooling-products |website=TechPowerUp |language=en-US |access-date=October 19, 2022}}
