The 2012 UCI World Tour was the fourth edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the Tour Down Under's opening stage on 17 January, and consisted of 14 stage races, 14 one-day races, and one team time trial (which only counted towards the team rankings). The Tour of Hangzhou which was originally included in the list of races was postponed until 2013.{{cite web|url=http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/uci-postpones-tour-of-hangzhou |title=UCI Postpones Tour Of Hangzhou |publisher=Cyclingnews.com |access-date=2012-08-28}}

Teams

The 18 UCI ProTeams competed in the World Tour, with UCI Professional Continental teams, or national squads, able to enter at the discretion of the organisers of each event. The ProTeams, which were obliged to take part in all 29 events, were:

{{2012 UCI ProTeams}}

{{UCI team code|GEC|2012a}} (known as {{UCI team code|GEC|2012b}} from May onwards) was a new team, while {{UCI team code|FDJ|2012}} regained ProTour status, which it lost for the previous season. These teams replaced {{UCI team code|THR|2011}}, which folded after 21 years, and {{UCI team code|RSH|2011}}, which largely merged with {{UCI team code|LEO|2011}} to form {{UCI team code|LEO|2012}}. A change in sponsorship saw {{UCI team code|QSI|2011}} become {{UCI team code|QSI|2012}}, while 2011's {{UCI team code|OLO|2011}} became {{UCI team code|OLO|2012}}. Two teams each changed their names twice to reflect changes of sponsorship: {{UCI team code|SAX|2012a}} reverting to its previous name, having been known as {{UCI team code|SAX|2011}} in 2011, before becoming {{UCI team code|SAX|2012b}} in June; while the serial addition of new sponsors gave rise to the names {{UCI team code|GRM|2012a}} and {{UCI team code|GRM|2012b}}.

Events

All 27 events from the 2011 UCI World Tour were included, and E3 Harelbeke, a one-day race in Belgium, and the World Team Trial Championships, were added.{{cite news|url=http://www.uci.ch/Modules/ENews/ENewsDetails2011.asp?id=ODM3OA&MenuId=MTI2Mjc&LangId=1&BackLink=%2Ftemplates%2FUCI%2FUCI7%2Flayout%2Easp%3FMenuId%3DMTI2Mjc%26LangId%3D1|title=UCI WorldTour licence for the Tour of Hangzhou and five other events renew their licence|work=UCI.ch|publisher=Union Cycliste Internationale|date=26 June 2012|access-date=26 June 2012}}

  • 248 riders scored points. 40 other riders finished in positions that would have earned them points, but they were ineligible as members of non-ProTour teams.Among these riders, from 9 different teams, is Thomas Voeckler, whose 156 points would have placed him in 33rd place in the individual table. Inclusion of these riders in the national rankings would have also moved France to 7th, Colombia to 12th and the Czech Republic to 15th: in the team rankings, {{UCI team code|EUC|2012}} would have been 15th, and {{UCI team code|FAR|2012}} 19th.
