The Doors was an American band of rock of the late 1960s and 1970s. The group was composed by vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Densmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger. Songs such as "Break on Through (To the Other Side)", "Light My Fire", "People Are Strange", or "Riders on the Storm", allied to the personality and scandal starred by Jim Morrison, contributed to the increase of the popularity of the group.

After the disintegration of the band in the early 1970s, and especially since the death of Morrison in 1971, the interest in the Doors' music was still very high, even surpassing at times what the group had while was still active. All over the world, their CDs already sold more than 75 million copies, and they continued to sell about 1 million annually.

The origins of The Doors lay in a chance meeting between acquaintances and fellow UCLA film school alumni Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach California in July of 1965. Morrison then told Manzarek that he liked to write songs and, upon request of Manzarek, sang "Moonlight Drive". Keyboardist Ray Manzarek was part of a band caled Rick And The Ravens with his brother Rick Manzarek,{{in lang|pt}} [http://cotonete.clix.pt/quiosque/especiais/doors/index.asp Jim Morrison no Cotonete] while Robby Krieger and John Densmore played in the The Psychedelic Rangers and knew Manzarek from yoga and meditation classes. In August, Densmore became part of the group and, along with members of the Ravens and bass player Patty Sullivan (later credited using her married name Patricia Hansen in the 1997 box CD release), recorded a six-song demo in September 1965. This was widely bootlegged and appeared in full on the 1997 Doors box set.

That month the group recruited guitarist Robby Krieger, and the final lineup — Morrison, Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore — was complete. The Doors were unusual among rock groups because they did not use a bass guitar when playing live. Instead, Manzarek played the bass lines with his left hand on the newly invented Fender Rhodes bass keyboard, an offshoot of the well-known Fender Rhodes electric piano, playing other keyboards with his right hand. On their studio albums (with the notable exception of their eponymous first record), The Doors did use bass players such as Jerry Scheff, Doug Lubahn, Harvey Brooks, Kerry Magness, Lonnie Mack, Larry Knechtel, Leroy Vinnegar, and Ray Neapolitan.

Many of The Doors' original songs were group compositions, with Morrison or Krieger contributing the lyrics and an initial melody, and the others providing harmonic and rhythmic suggestions, or even entire sections of song (e.g. Manzarek's organ introduction to "Light My Fire").

After Holzman and producer Paul A. The timing was fortunate, because on August 21 the club fired the band after a profanity-filled performance of "The End". In an incident that foreshadowed the controversy that would follow the group, an acid-tripping Morrison raucously recited his own rendition of the Greek drama Oedipus Rex in which the play's protagonist Oedipus kills his father and has sex with his mother. Morrison's version consisted of "Father? Yes son? I want to kill you. Mother? I want to fuck you".

The Doors' self-titled debut LP was recorded in August 1966 and released in the first week of January 1967.[http://www.amazon.com/Doors/dp/B000002I25 The Doors on Amazon] It featured most of the major songs from their set, including the 11-minute musical drama, "The End". The band recorded the album in a few days in late August and early September 1966, almost entirely live in the studio with many songs captured in a single take.

Morrison and Manzarek directed a promotional film for the lead single "Break on Through (To the Other Side)",[http://www.warr.org/doors.html The Doors in WARR] a significant advance in the development of the music video genre.

The second single, "Light My Fire", became a smash hit in mid-1967,[http://archives.waiting-forthe-sun.net/Pages/Legacy/Albums/TheDoors/Songs/LightMyFire.html The Doors Song Notes: Light My Fire] and established the group — in the vein of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead — as one of America's vital counterculture bands. For AM radio airplay, the long middle organ and guitar solos were cut out from the song.

In May of the same year, The Doors made their television premiere when they recorded a version of "The End" for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in the studios of Yorkville, in Toronto. It stayed inaccessible from its original transmission until the release of the DVD The Doors Soundstage Performances in 2002.

The Doors won good reputations with polemic live performances. With their presence in stage and their tight jeans, Morrison became a sex symbol. However, he quickly became tired of this condition of being a star. One of the most famous polemics occurred when the censors of the ed TV network Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) demanded that Morrison changed the lyrics of "Light My Fire" through the alteration of the verse, "Girl, we couldn't get much higher", before the band would play it live at September 17 of 1967, in the Ed Sullivan Show. The verse was changed to, "Girl, we couldn't get much better". However, Morrison sang the original verse, and because of the fact that the transmission was live, CBS could not do anything to stop him. Furious, Ed Sullivan refused to compliment the band members, and they never again were invited to act i the program. According to Manzarek, the band was informed that it would never "do the Sullivan again". Manzarek affirms that the band agreed with the producer beforehand, but that they did not have any intention to change the verse. They also played a single, "People Are Strange", to the "DJ Murray The K's TV show" on September 22.

On December 10, Morrison acted in his rebellious character when he was arrestedd in New Haven, Connecticut, for insulting the police in front of a whole audience. Morrison affirmed that he was attacked with spray by an officer after being beaten backstage with a petticoat

On December 24, The Doors taped "Light My Fire" and "Moonlight Drive" live for the ''Jonathan Winters". From December 26 to 28, the group acted at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. In an excerpt from the book of Stephen Davis about Jim Morrison, it is written:Davis, pp. 219-20:

They played two more dates in Denver on December 30 and December 31, capping off a year of almost constant touring. .

In October of 1967, Strange Days, the second album of The Dors, was launched[http://www.amazon.com/Strange-Days-Doors/dp/B000002I27 Strange Days on Amazon] and considered less spontaneous than their debut, but it was noted for its evocative lyrics and atmosphere. The closing track, "When the Music's Over", was, like "The End", lengthy and dramatic, and helped establish Morrison's reputation as the shaman of rock.The album was also commercial and featured now-classic Doors songs such as "People Are Strange" and "Love Me Two Times".

As a result of their success, The Doors forfeited their status as underground heroes. They allowed Sixteen magazine to portray them as teen idols and their "spontaneous" stage-show was exposed as not-so-spontaneous. An article by Jerry Hopkins in the February 10, 1968 edition of Rolling Stone typified the fall from grace:

In April, the recording of the third album was marred by tension as a result of Morrison's increasing dependence on alcohol. Approaching the height of their popularity, the Doors played a series of outdoor shows that led to frenzied scenes between fans and police, particularly at Chicago Coliseum on May 10.

The band began to branch out from their initial form in their third LP, Waiting for the Sun, principally because of the fact that they had exhausted their original repertoire and began writing new material. It became their first and last LP to reach the first place of the Billboard 200[http://www.rockonthenet.com/artists-d/doors.htm The Doors at Rockonthenet.com] and the single "Hello, I Love You" was their second and last to reach the first place of the Billboard Hot 100. This new album reinforced the departure of The Doors from the panorama "underground". It was eventually launched in a compilation of bigger successes, in CD.

There was a controversy because of the release of the single "Hello, I Love You", with the musical press pointing our musical similarities with the song of the 1965 success of the The Kinks, "All Day and All of the Night". Members of the Kinks have concurred with the music critics: Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has been known to add snippets of "Hello, I Love You" during solo live performances of "All Day and All of the Night" as a sarcastic commentary on the subject.[http://kinks.it.rit.edu/misc/articles/latimes.html Loyal Pains: The Davies Boys Are Still at It] In concert, Morrison was occasionally dismissive of the song, and left the vocal chores to Manzarek.

One month after riotous scenes at the Singer Bowl in New York,[http://www.doors.com/door_mem/books/onthe_rd.html The Doors: On The Road] by Greg Shaw the group flew to Britain for its first dates outside of North America. They held a press conference at the ICA Gallery in London and played shows at The Roundhouse Theatre. The results of the trip were broadcaston Granada TV's The Doors Are Open, which was later released on video. played dates in Europe, including a show in Amsterdam without Morrison after he collapsed from a drug binge. Morrison returned to London on September 20 and stayed for a month.

The group played nine more US dates and began to work, in November, on their fourth LP. The year 1969 started with a sold out show at Madison Square Garden in New York on January 24[http://www.graphicwitness.com/doors/garden/index.html The Doors at Madison Square Garden] and with a successful new single, "Touch Me", (released in December 1968), which hit US #3.

In January 1969, Morrison participated ina theater production that changed the band's course. In the auditorium of the University of Southern California, he made a performance that appealed to his search for personal freedom.

This resulted in a "jam" in the studio on February 25, that became the legendary session of "Rock Is Dead", later launched in the box-set of The Doors in 1997. It also served for the base of a controversial and popular episode.

The Miami incident was a Doors concert on March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Florida. Morrison was drinking since he missed the flight to the concert.Koll, p. 8 The 6,900 seats in the auditorium were all crowded: actually there were approximately 13,000 people present at that time. Then Morris blustered on the microphone: "You didn't come here for music did you? You came for something more, didn't you? You didn't come to rock'n'roll, you came for something else didn't you? You came for something else --WHAT IS IT?" The audience was a bit shocked, and some people shouted all sorts of options for what they came to see. Then Morris declared: " You want to see my c*ck, don't you? That's what you came for isn't it? YEAHHHH!" Allegedley, Morrison waved his shirt in front of his crotch in bullfighter tradition, he took it away for an instant and taunted. "See it? Did you see it?"Morris, Jan E. Then the "audience proceeded to 'see' exactly what they wanted to see (reality has never been defined)".

However, some evidences show that this never happened. "After taunting the audience with 'hints' that he intended to reveal his penis, Jim began to move his shirt back and forth covering and uncovering his crotch. As Ray states: 'I think what happened in Miami was a mass hallucination. I think the people saw snakes. I think no snake presented itself, no snake was seen. But they saw it, man. In their minds' eyes, in their hallucinations, Jim Morrison did what people alleged that he did.'"

The incident resulted in Morrison's arrest on charges of indecency and obscenity, and one after another all the subsequent shows on The Doors upcoming tour canceled. "We had our first great excursion to twenty cities programmed, and we were all anxious because of that," writes Manzarek. "Twenty cities? My God, are we going to do an excursion of one month? Until then, we were not on the road for four or five days. But all the cities cancelled, all over the country."

The band then confronted Morrison becuase of his alcoholism. The incident remains inconclusive.

Between the time Morrison returned from his post-Miami trip to Jamaica with The Doors and he recorded some of his poetry and began shooting HWY, an experimental film about a hitchhiker played by himself. The Doors set the poetry session to music for the 1978 album An American Prayer. HWY contains virtually no dialog and circulates among collectors.

Although Morrison received the most attention, having a larger image on the covering of the starring album of the group, he demanded that all the members of the group be equally recognized. In his last two years of life, Morrison took less drugs and started to drink a lot. This affected his performances on stage and in the studios. He gained weight and began growing beard, which made Elektra use older photos for the cover of the LP Absolutely Live, released in 1970.

The group's only public appearance was on a PBS television special recorded late in April and broadcast the following month. The group performed songs from the upcoming Soft Parade album.

The Doors resumed touring at Chicago Auditorium Theater on June 14 and played two dates at Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood on July 21 and July 22, both later released on CD. Morrison appeared heavily bearded, wearing casual hippie attire and tinted aviator glasses, sitting on a stool. The image change that had begun at Miami to shed his sex symbol status was now complete.

Once The Doors completed their fifth album "Morrison Hotel" and a tour to support it, Morrison and the band found their career consumed with the Miami trial. On October 30, 1970, Morrison was found guilty of two charges, profanity and indecent exposure. He was acquitted of the charge of drunkenness and the felony of lewd behavior. The verdict was contested and Morrison died in July 1971 while his case was still on appeal.

De qualquer forma, os Doors recuperaram definitivamente, nesta altura, o estatuto que haviam perdido nos registos anteriores (excepto Morrison Hotel) com L.A. Morrison morreu em circunstâncias misteriosas a 3 de Julho de 1971. O seu corpo foi encontrado na banheira do seu apartamento. = Pós-Morrison (1972 - 2000) =

Os restantes membros dos Doors continuaram durante mais algum tempo a actuar, considerando inicialmente em substituir Morrison com novo vocalista. Chegou-se a afirmar que Iggy Pop era um dos cantores considerados para a possível entrada. No entanto, Krieger e Manzarek ficaram com os vocais, lançando mais dois álbuns, Other Voices e Full Circle, e partiram em mais uma digressão. Ambos os álbuns venderam menos que os registos da era Morrison, e por isso os Doors pararam as actuações e as gravações no final de 1972. O último álbum entrou no território do jazz. Em 2001, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore e Robby Krieger reuniram-se pela primeira vez em mais de vinte e cinco anos para tocar canções dos The Doors como parte da série VH1 Storytellers. A cantar com a banda estiveram vários vocalistas convidados, incluindo Ian Astbury dos The Cult, Scott Stapp dos Creed, Scott Weiland dos Stone Temple Pilots, Perry Farrell dos Jane's Addiction e Travis Meeks dos Days of the New. O espectáculo foi mais tarde lançado no DVD VH1 Storytellers - The Doors (A Celebration).

Em 2002, Manzarek e Krieger voltaram a juntar-se e criaram uma nova versão dos Doors, designada "The Doors of the 21st Century." O alinhamento era liderado por Astbury, com Angelo Barbera da Krieger's Band no baixo. No seu primeiro concerto, o grupo anunciou que o baterista John Densmore não participaria, e mais tarde foi reportado que não podia tocar devido a um problema de tinnitus. Em Fevereiro de 2003, ele procede a uma acção judicial contra os seus antigos companheiros de banda, para evitar que estes usassem o nome "The Doors of the 21st Century." A sua moção foi recusada em tribunal em maio. Manzarek afirmou publicamente que o convite para Densmore regressar ao grupo mantinha-se firme. Nesta altura, a família de Morrison juntou-se a Densmore na tentativa de evitar que Manzarek e Krieger usassem o nome "The Doors". Em julho de 2005, Densmore e os representantes de Morrison ganharam uma acção judicial permanente, obrigando a nova banda a mudar o nome para "D21C." Actualmente tocam sob a designação Riders on the Storm, em referência à canção da banda com o mesmo nome.
