Season overview
Inter hoped to improve from past seasons;{{cite book|title=La grande storia dell'Inter|author=Stefano Petrucci|publisher=L'Airone Editrice|year=2005|pages=86–90|language=italian|isbn=88-7944-723-8}} goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi was replaced by Frenchman Sébastien Frey ten years his junior, while Fabio Macellari did the same with Grigorios Georgatos on the left side of defence. The burden of scoring was given to Hakan Şükür and Robbie Keane, waiting for Vieri's recovery and Ronaldo's return.{{cite news|url=http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/2000/08/09/inter-keane-sukur-la-strana-coppia.html|title=Inter, Keane-Sukur la strana coppia|author=Gianni Piva|newspaper=la Repubblica|date=August 9, 2000|page=46|language=it}} Inter did not pass the Champions League preliminary round: they were defeated by Helsingborg, losing on a 1–0 aggregate.{{cite web|url=http://www.repubblica.it/online/sport/nuovecoppe/partite/partite.html|title=The rebirth of Milan Inter, knock-out in Sweden|website=repubblica.it|date=August 9, 2000|language=it}}{{cite web|url=http://www.repubblica.it/online/sport/nuovecoppe/partitainter/partitainter.html|title=Disappointment for Inter Bye bye Champions|website=repubblica.it|date=August 23, 2000|language=it}} The side then lost the Supercoppa Italiana, defeated 4–3 by Lazio.{{cite news|url=http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/2000/09/09/lopez-subito-show-inter-ko.html|title=Lopez, subito show: Inter ko|author=Corrado Sannucci|newspaper=la Repubblica|date=September 9, 2000|page=57|language=it}} Coach Lippi lost instead his job in October, after the 2–1 defeat to Reggina in Serie A.{{cite web|url=http://www.repubblica.it/online/campionato/mora/mora/mora.html|title=Inter dumps Marcello Lippi|website=repubblica.it|date=October 3, 2000|language=it}}
