The 2012 Galician regional election was held on Sunday, 21 October 2012, to elect the 9th Parliament of the autonomous community of Galicia. All 75 seats in the Parliament were up for election. The election was held simultaneously with a regional election in the Basque Country.
President Alberto Núñez Feijóo announced the election following Lehendakari Patxi López's decision to schedule a Basque snap regional election for 21 October 2012.{{cite news |date=26 August 2012 |title=Feijóo apura el plazo para decidir si convoca las elecciones el 21-O |url=https://elpais.com/politica/2012/08/26/actualidad/1346010694_325944.html |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=14 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=27 August 2012 |title=Feijóo justifica el adelanto electoral para "no crear más inestabilidad" |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/08/27/galicia/1346049449_644353.html |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=14 February 2020}} The vote was seen as an electoral test on the economic policy of Mariano Rajoy's government, which had been elected at the 2011 Spanish general election and had undertaken harsh spending cuts which had seen its popularity ratings plummet in opinion polls.{{cite news |date=5 October 2012 |title=Rajoy se examina de sus recortes en la campaña electoral del 21-O |url=https://elpais.com/politica/2012/10/04/actualidad/1349382253_761445.html |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=14 February 2020}} Feijóo aimed at securing reelection for a second term in office at the helm of the regional People's Party (PP), for which he needed the party to retain the absolute majority it commanded in parliament to prevent an alternative coalition being formed between the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdeG–PSOE) and the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), similarly to the one in power in the 2005–2009 period.{{cite news |date=6 September 2012 |title=PSdeG y BNG hablan ya claramente de alcanzar un pacto de Gobierno |url=https://www.elcorreogallego.es/galicia/ecg/psdeg-y-bng-hablan-ya-claramente-de-alcanzar-un-pacto-de-gobierno/idEdicion-2012-09-06/idNoticia-764367/metrics |language=es |newspaper=El Correo Gallego |access-date=14 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=6 September 2012 |title=Elecciones gallegas 2012: "Pachi" y Jorquera coinciden en su voluntad de reeditar el bipartito |url=https://www.abc.es/espana/galicia/abcp-pachi-vazquez-jorquera-coinciden-201209060000_noticia.html |language=es |newspaper=ABC |access-date=14 February 2020}}

Overview
=Electoral system=
The Parliament of Galicia was the devolved, unicameral legislature of the autonomous community of Galicia, having legislative power in regional matters as defined by the Spanish Constitution and the Galician Statute of Autonomy, as well as the ability to vote confidence in or withdraw it from a regional president.{{cite act |title=Ley Orgánica 1/1981, de 6 de abril, de Estatuto de Autonomía para Galicia |type=Organic Law |number=1 |language=es |date=6 April 1981 |url=https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-1981-9564&tn=1&p=20100717 |access-date=8 August 2017}} Voting for the Parliament was on the basis of universal suffrage, which comprised all nationals over 18 years of age, registered in Galicia and in full enjoyment of their political rights. Amendments to the electoral law in 2011 required for Galicians abroad to apply for voting before being permitted to vote, a system known as "begged" or expat vote ({{langx|es|Voto rogado}}).{{cite web |last=Reig Pellicer |first=Naiara |date=16 December 2015 |url=http://www.cafebabel.co.uk/politics/article/spanish-elections-begging-for-the-right-to-vote.html |title=Spanish elections: Begging for the right to vote |website=cafebabel.co.uk |access-date=17 July 2017}}
The 75 members of the Parliament of Galicia were elected using the D'Hondt method and a closed list proportional representation, with an electoral threshold of five percent of valid votes—which included blank ballots—being applied in each constituency. Seats were allocated to constituencies, corresponding to the provinces of A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra, with each being allocated an initial minimum of 10 seats and the remaining 35 being distributed in proportion to their populations.{{cite act |title=Ley 8/1985, de 13 de agosto, de elecciones al Parlamento de Galicia |type=Law |number=2 |language=es |date=13 August 1985 |url=https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-1985-21380&tn=1&p=20120813 |access-date=8 August 2017}}
As a result of the aforementioned allocation, each Parliament constituency was entitled the following seats:

=Election date=
The term of the Parliament of Galicia expired four years after the date of its previous election, unless it was dissolved earlier. The election decree was required to be issued no later than the twenty-fifth day prior to the date of expiry of parliament and published on the following day in the Official Journal of Galicia (DOG), with election day taking place between the fifty-fourth and the sixtieth day from publication. The previous election was held on 1 March 2009, which meant that the legislature's term would have expired on 1 March 2013. The election decree was required to be published in the DOG no later than 5 February 2013, with the election taking place up to the sixtieth day from publication, setting the latest possible election date for the Parliament on Saturday, 6 April 2013.
The president had the prerogative to dissolve the Parliament of Galicia and call a snap election, provided that it did not occur before one year had elapsed since a previous dissolution under this procedure. In the event of an investiture process failing to elect a regional President within a two-month period from the first ballot, the Parliament was to be automatically dissolved and a fresh election called.{{cite act |title=Ley 1/1983, de 22 de febrero, de normas reguladoras de la Xunta y su Presidencia |type=Law |number=1 |language=es |date=22 February 1983 |url=https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=DOG-g-1983-90054&tn=1&p=20070808 |access-date=8 August 2017}}
Speculation on the 2013 Galician election being held ahead of schedule emerged after opinion polls at the end of 2011—shortly after the 2011 Spanish general election which saw a landslide victory for the People's Party (PP) across Spain—pointed to an "historic absolute majority" for the party in the region.{{cite news |date=21 May 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/05/21/galicia/1337601399_618143.html |title=Feijóo rechazó adelantar las elecciones a finales de 2011 pese a los buenos sondeos |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=3 June 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/politica/2012/06/03/actualidad/1338757498_040409.html |title=La sombra del desgaste en Euskadi y Galicia empaña la unidad del PP |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} In February 2012, Galician president Alberto Núñez Feijóo had ruled out a snap election "before the summer",{{cite news |date=1 February 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/02/01/galicia/1328114533_308242.html |title=Feijóo asegura que no está "en su agenda" el adelanto de las autonómicas |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=1 February 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/02/01/galicia/1328129750_605708.html |title=Feijóo descarta adelantar las elecciones a antes del verano |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} a decision that he reiterated after the Andalusian regional election on 25 March had seen the PP losing over 400,000 votes in comparison to the party's 2011 general election results in the region.{{cite news |date=26 March 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/03/26/galicia/1332791837_455743.html |title=Feijóo: "Lo de Andalucía no tiene que ver con los problemas de Galicia" |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} The media pointed out that Feijóo could be considering an autumn election instead,{{cite news |date=24 April 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/04/24/galicia/1335293432_605114.html |title=La fecha de las elecciones |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=8 July 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/07/08/galicia/1341776013_870950.html |title=Rojo asegura que Feijóo medita adelantar las elecciones |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} in order to prevent further spending cuts from the national PP government under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy from affecting his image,{{cite news |date=29 June 2012 |url=https://www.farodevigo.es/galicia/2012/06/29/genova-apunta-elecciones-otono/660966.html |title=Génova apunta a elecciones en otoño |language=es |newspaper=Faro de Vigo |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=27 August 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/08/27/galicia/1346047602_926476.html |title=Feijóo comunica hoy la fecha electoral tras cerrarla con los barones del partido |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} On 21 August 2012, Lehendakari Patxi López's announcement of a snap Basque election for 21 October left Feijóo little room for an autumn election,{{cite news |date=21 August 2012 |title=Patxi López adelanta las elecciones vascas al 21 de octubre y critica el "torpedeo" de PP y PNV |url=http://www.rtve.es/noticias/20120821/elecciones-vascas-21-octubre/559172.shtml |language=es |publisher=RTVE |access-date=9 February 2020}} and one week later he called a snap election in Galicia to be held concurrently with the Basque poll.{{cite news |date=27 August 2012 |url=http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2012/08/27/espana/1346050313.html |title=Feijóo adelanta las elecciones gallegas para que coincidan con las vascas |language=es |newspaper=El Mundo |access-date=18 February 2020}}
Background
The election was held amid a climate of falling popularity for the Mariano Rajoy's government, with the electoral campaign being focused on the austerity measures and spending cuts approved by the national PP government. In July 2012, a €65 billion-worth spending cut and a VAT rise from 18% to 21% was introduced, with such measures being heavily criticised because they were a breach of key campaign promises made by the PP in the party's election manifesto.{{cite news |date=11 July 2012 |url=http://politica.elpais.com/politica/2012/07/11/actualidad/1341987548_244376.html |title=El ajuste más duro de la democracia |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=11 July 2012 |url=http://economia.elpais.com/economia/2012/07/11/actualidad/1341993669_688144.html |title=La subida del IVA hasta el 21% busca elevar la recaudación en 7.500 millones |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} The PP vote share had plummeted in national opinion polls from 40% to 34% as a result, raising fears within Núñez Feijóo's regional government on the possibility of losing their overall majority in the Galician regional election; this had seen an attempt to reform the regional electoral law by decreasing the size of the Parliament of Galicia from 75 to 61, under a seat apportionment that was seen as benefitting the PP's rural strongholds.{{cite news |date=24 July 2012 |url=http://ccaa.elpais.com/ccaa/2012/07/24/galicia/1343156674_556562.html |title=Feijóo fuerza un cambio legal para conservar su mayoría absoluta |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}{{cite news |date=26 July 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/07/26/galicia/1343331937_616917.html |title=Feijóo aprobará en solitario la reducción de escaños que beneficia al PP |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}} The reform did not come to pass as a result of the snap poll and a lack of consensus with opposition parties for its approval.{{cite news |date=2 August 2012 |url=https://elpais.com/ccaa/2012/08/02/galicia/1343939547_267315.html |title=La reforma electoral del PP dinamita todos los consensos parlamentarios |language=es |newspaper=El País |access-date=18 February 2020}}

Parties and candidates
The electoral law allowed for parties and federations registered in the interior ministry, coalitions and groupings of electors to present lists of candidates. Parties and federations intending to form a coalition ahead of an election were required to inform the relevant Electoral Commission within ten days of the election call, whereas groupings of electors needed to secure the signature of at least one percent of the electorate in the constituencies for which they sought election, disallowing electors from signing for more than one list of candidates.{{cite act |title=Ley Orgánica 5/1985, de 19 de junio, del Régimen Electoral General |type=Organic Law |number=5 |language=es |date=19 June 1985 |url=https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-1985-11672&tn=1&p=20110716 |access-date=28 December 2016}}

Opinion polls
The tables below list opinion polling results in reverse chronological order, showing the most recent first and using the dates when the survey fieldwork was done, as opposed to the date of publication. Where the fieldwork dates are unknown, the date of publication is given instead. The highest percentage figure in each polling survey is displayed with its background shaded in the leading party's colour. If a tie ensues, this is applied to the figures with the highest percentages. The "Lead" column on the right shows the percentage-point difference between the parties with the highest percentages in a poll.
=Voting intention estimates=
The table below lists weighted voting intention estimates. Refusals are generally excluded from the party vote percentages, while question wording and the treatment of "don't know" responses and those not intending to vote may vary between polling organisations. When available, seat projections determined by the polling organisations are displayed below (or in place of) the percentages in a smaller font; 38 seats were required for an absolute majority in the Parliament of Galicia.
