Republican Chip Cravaack, who was first elected to represent Minnesota's 8th congressional district in 2010, sought re-election.
In redistricting, the 8th district was not significantly changed and remained competitive.
Cravaack was endorsed by the Mesabi Daily News in Virginia and the Duluth News Tribune.{{cite web |last=Kimball|first=Joe|title=Duluth Paper Again Endorses Cravaack in 8th District Congressional Race |publisher=MinnPost |date=October 22, 2012 |url=http://www.minnpost.com/political-agenda/2012/10/duluth-paper-again-endorses-cravaack-8th-district-congressional-race}} On November 6, he lost his seat to former Democratic congressman Rick Nolan, 54% to 45%.
