The 2022 United States Senate election in Georgia was held on November 8, 2022, to elect a member of the U.S. Senate to represent the state of Georgia. Incumbent Democratic senator Raphael Warnock won his first full term in office, defeating Republican former football player Herschel Walker. Under Georgia's two-round system, Warnock was re-elected in a runoff election on December 6 after neither candidate received over 50% of the vote on November 8.{{cite news |last=Hulse |first=Carl |date=2022-12-07 |title=Democrats Didn't Just Win Georgia. They Secured a Firmer Grip on the Senate |newspaper=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/06/us/democrats-georgia-senate-majority.html |access-date=2022-12-07 |issn=0362-4331}} Warnock's win was the only statewide victory for Democrats in Georgia in 2022.
Warnock, who won a shortened term to the seat in a 2020–21 special election, was nominated in the May 24 primary for a full term with minimal opposition. Walker, who was endorsed by former president Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, won the Republican nomination with 68% of the vote. It was the first U.S. Senate election in Georgia history and among five nationwide since the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913 in which both major party nominees were Black.{{Cite news |date=2022-05-25 |title=Primary elections live updates: Georgia rebuffs Trump candidates for governor, attorney general, secretary of state |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/25/midterm-primary-elections-georgia-alabama-texas/ |access-date=2022-05-26 |newspaper=The Washington Post |language=en}}{{cite web|last1=Thanawala|first1=Sudhin|last2=Amy|first2=Jeff|title=In Georgia, 2 Black candidates to compete for Senate seat|publisher=Associated Press |date=May 28, 2022|url= https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-raphael-warnock-herschel-walker-5e8beec03c05d64240343073255725d2}}{{efn|name="Senate elections"|After Illinois in 2004 and South Carolina in 2014 and 2016, and concurrently with South Carolina in 2022.}}

Warnock's victory also secured an outright majority for Senate Democrats for the first time since 2015, with a net gain of one seat in the 2022 midterms.{{cite news |last=Dorn |first=Sara |date=November 9, 2022 |title=Walker, Warnock Headed For A Runoff In Georgia Senate Race |work=Forbes |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2022/11/09/walker-warnock-headed-for-a-runoff-in-georgia-senate-race/ |url-status=live |access-date=November 11, 2022 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20221111234703/https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2022/11/09/walker-warnock-headed-for-a-runoff-in-georgia-senate-race/?sh=6d571faf2d7b |archive-date=November 11, 2022}}{{cite web |last=Samuels |first=Alex |date=2022-11-30 |title=How Either Candidate Could Win Georgia's Senate Runoff |url=https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-either-candidate-could-win-georgias-senate-runoff/ |access-date=2022-12-06 |website=FiveThirtyEight}} This was the first time since 1998 that Georgia voted for different parties for U.S. senator and governor in the same election cycle. Despite a strong gubernatorial performance by incumbent governor Brian Kemp in his reelection bid, and leading the polls since October, Walker ended up one point behind Warnock and was forced into a runoff. Ticket splitting was evident, as Walker underperformed Brian Kemp by 203,130 votes, while Warnock did 132,444 votes better than Abrams.{{Cite web |title=Voters who backed GOP governors helped keep the Senate blue |url=https://www.politico.com/news/2022/11/19/ticket-splitting-senate-democrats-00069574 |access-date=2022-12-12 |website=Politico |date=November 19, 2022 |language=en}}

Runoff
Following the projection of incumbent Democratic senator Catherine Cortez Masto's victory in Nevada, it became clear that, unlike in the previous cycle, the results of the Georgia runoff would not determine control of the United States Senate. With all Democratic incumbents besides Warnock winning re-election and Democrat John Fetterman flipping an open seat in Pennsylvania that had been held by retiring Republican Pat Toomey, Democrats held their majority in the Senate.{{efn|Two independent senators caucus with Senate Democrats and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris casts the tie-breaking vote.}}{{cite web |last=Cilliza |first=Chris |date=November 14, 2022 |title=Why the Georgia Senate race is *still* incredibly important for Democrats |url=https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/14/politics/georgia-runoff-democrats-2024-senate-map/index.html |publisher=CNN |access-date=November 29, 2022}} Nevertheless, national Democrats and Republicans began spending on advertising and volunteer mobilization efforts as soon as it became apparent that a runoff election would be necessary.{{cite news |last1=Rodriguez |first1=Sabrina |last2=Linskey |first2=Annie |date=November 13, 2022 |title=Parties gear up for runoff in Ga., the last outstanding Senate race |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/13/georgia-senate-runoff-warnock-walker/ |newspaper=The Washington Post |access-date=November 29, 2022}} Historically, runoff elections in Georgia have favored Republicans as turnout decreased disproportionately amongst Democratic voters, but in 2021, with Senate control to be determined, turnout was historically high, and Democrats won both races.{{cite web |last=Samuels |first=Alex |date=2022-11-03 |title=What Happens If Georgia's Senate Race Goes To A Runoff — Again? |url=https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-happens-if-georgias-senate-race-goes-to-a-runoff-again/ |access-date=2022-12-06 |website=FiveThirtyEight}} Prior to the runoff, elections analysts questioned whether Georgia voters would turn out in such high numbers again and tried to determine which candidate's coalition of supporters would be more likely to turn out.{{cite web |last=Samuels |first=Alex |date=November 9, 2022 |title=Can Raphael Warnock Pull Off Another Senate Runoff? |url=https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/runoffs-are-sort-of-georgias-thing-now/ |website=FiveThirtyEight |access-date=November 29, 2022}} This was the fifth runoff in the state's history.
