Originally planned for October 2025, President Aliyev called for a snap election in December 2023 following the victorious Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. This offensive led to the end of the Republic of Artsakh, which was an Armenian-led breakaway state, and Azerbaijan gaining full control over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.{{Cite web |date=2023-12-07 |title=Azerbaijan's Aliyev calls snap presidential elections for February |url=https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/7/azerbaijans-aliyev-calls-snap-presidential-elections-for-february |access-date=2023-12-08 |website=Al Jazeera |language=en |archive-date=8 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231208004519/https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/7/azerbaijans-aliyev-calls-snap-presidential-elections-for-february |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |date=2023-12-07 |title=Azerbaijan To Hold Snap Presidential Poll On February 7 |url=https://www.rferl.org/a/azerbaijan-aliyev-snap-presidential-poll/32719685.html |access-date=2023-12-08 |work=RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty |language=en |archive-date=8 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231208004519/https://www.rferl.org/a/azerbaijan-aliyev-snap-presidential-poll/32719685.html |url-status=live }} The election is informally known as the "Victory Election" ({{Langx|az|Zəfər seçkisi}}) due to the successful military operation.{{Cite web |last=Məmmədov |first=Səlim |date=2023-12-10 |title=Növbədənkənar seçkilər əsl Zəfər seçkisi olacaq |url=http://demokrat.az/az/news/172489/novbedenkenar-seckiler-esl-zefer-seckisi-olacaq |access-date=2023-12-30 |website=demokrat.az |language=az |archive-date=16 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231216212033/https://demokrat.az/az/news/172489/novbedenkenar-seckiler-esl-zefer-seckisi-olacaq |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2023-12-11 |title="Növbədənkənar seçkiləri Zəfər seçkiləri adlandırmaq olar" - Arzu Nağıyev |url=https://sfera.az/siyaset/237546/nvbedenkenar-seckileri-zefer-seckileri-adlandirmaq-olar-arzu-naiyev/ |access-date=2023-12-30 |website=sfera.az |language=az |archive-date=16 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231216212034/https://sfera.az/siyaset/237546/nvbedenkenar-seckileri-zefer-seckileri-adlandirmaq-olar-arzu-naiyev/ |url-status=live }} It marks the third snap election in Azerbaijan's history and the first to be held in winter season.{{Cite web |last=Həmidoğlu |first=Qəzənfər |date=2023-12-07 |title=Qışda ilk prezident seçkisi... no problem! |url=https://modern.az/analitika/445061/qishda-ilk-prezident-sechkisi/ |access-date=2023-12-09 |website=modern.az |language=az-AZ |archive-date=11 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231211171909/https://modern.az/analitika/445061/qishda-ilk-prezident-sechkisi/ |url-status=live }}

Background

The previous 2018 presidential election was held months ahead of schedule which saw the re-election of long-time authoritarian president Ilham Aliyev, in power since 2003, securing a fourth consecutive term in office after obtaining 86% of the vote. The election was boycotted by the Azerbaijani opposition and criticized for its conduct and early schedule amid allegations of irregularities and electoral fraud.{{Cite news |date=2018-04-12 |title=Azerbaijan's President Secures Fourth Term In Vote Criticized As Uncompetitive |language=en |work=Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty |url=https://www.rferl.org/a/azerbaijan-aliyev-expected-win-reelection-april-11-vote/29158177.html |access-date=2023-12-08 |archive-date=29 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231229130639/https://www.rferl.org/a/azerbaijan-aliyev-expected-win-reelection-april-11-vote/29158177.html |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2018-02-05 |title=Azerbaijan's Aliyev calls snap presidential poll |url=https://www.dw.com/en/azerbaijan-leader-ilham-aliyev-calls-snap-presidential-poll/a-42459874 |access-date=2023-12-08 |website=dw.com |language=en |archive-date=8 December 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231208050145/https://www.dw.com/en/azerbaijan-leader-ilham-aliyev-calls-snap-presidential-poll/a-42459874 |url-status=live }}

President Aliyev's fourth presidential term was initially embarked by a series of socioeconomic reforms, where he issued decrees addressing burdensome credit loans, providing compensation to the families of military veterans, and increasing student stipends, as well as issuing mass pardons to several political prisoners.{{Cite web |last=Asgarov |first=Asgar |date=2019-03-18 |title=Dozens of The Nagorno-Karabakh region has served as an epicenter of the decades-long conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Since 1994 much of Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, was de-facto under control by the ethnic Armenian-led breakaway state Republic of Artsakh, with periods of
