{{American imperialism}}
Donald Trump, the president of the United States since January 20, 2025, has proposed various plans and ideas in the lead-up to and since his second inauguration that would expand the United States' political influence and territory.{{cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/23/us/politics/trump-greenland-panama-canal.html |title=Trump's Wish to Control Greenland and Panama Canal: Not a Joke This Time |work=The New York Times |last1=Sanger |first1=David E. |last2=Friedman |first2=Lisa |date=December 23, 2024}} In his second inaugural address, Trump directly referenced potential territorial expansion, and became the first U.S. president to use the phrase manifest destiny during an inaugural address.{{cite web |url=https://abcnews.go.com/538/video/trumps-term-begins-538-politics-podcast-117938628 |title=Trump's Second Term Begins - 538 Politics Podcast |website=ABC News |access-date=2025-01-24}}{{Cite web |last=Spetalnick |first=Matt |date=January 20, 2025 |title=Trump vows to take back Panama Canal, talks of 'Manifest Destiny' in space |url=https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/trump-says-us-will-take-back-panama-canal-2025-01-20/ |access-date=January 21, 2025 |website=Reuters}} The last territory acquired by the United States came in 1947 with the acquisition of the Northern Mariana Islands, Caroline, and Marshall Islands. Of these islands, only the Northern Mariana Islands would become a U.S. territory, with the others becoming independent in the 1980s and 1990s under Compacts of Free Association.
Since being elected to a second term, Trump has said at various points that he wants to annex Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. He has also suggested invading Venezuela, annexing Mexico, taking over the Gaza Strip, and influencing the direction of the Catholic Church. Trump's determination to treat the Western Hemisphere as a U.S. sphere of influence has been characterized as a revival of the Monroe Doctrine.{{cite news |title=Trump, Greenland and the rebirth of the Monroe Doctrine |url=https://www.ft.com/content/9bbba76a-6b12-4e31-b93e-89cfc3b2e06a |work=Financial Times |date=10 January 2025}}{{cite news |title=Trump revives Monroe Doctrine in U.S. relations with Western Hemisphere |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/02/28/trump-latin-america-monroe-doctrine/ |work=The Washington Post |date=February 28, 2025}}
According to a February 2025 poll by YouGov, only 4% of Americans support American expansion if it requires military force, 33% of Americans support expansion without the use of military or economic force, and 48% of Americans oppose expansion altogether.{{Cite web |url=https://today.yougov.com/international/articles/51578-few-americans-support-us-expansion-if-it-requires-force |title=Only 4% of Americans support U.S. expansion if it requires force |website=YouGov}}

In December 2024, Trump stated a further proposal for the United States to purchase Greenland from Denmark, describing ownership and control of the island as "an absolute necessity" for national security purposes. The U.S. has fabricated the lie of 'China controlling the Panama Canal' and maliciously attacked China, which is merely an excuse to justify its control over the Canal and push forward its expansionist and 'Monroe Doctrine'-style hegemonic agenda. The international community and the people of Panama see this very clearly. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino also rejected the false claim of Chinese interference because this is not based on facts."{{Cite web |date=2025-04-23 |title=No lie can conceal US ambition over Panama Canal: spokesman |url=https://www.bastillepost.com/global/article/4776625-no-lie-can-conceal-us-ambition-over-panama-canal-spokesman |access-date=2025-04-30 |website=www.bastillepost.com}}
