Bakkeveen ({{langx|fy|Bakkefean}}) is a village in the municipality of Opsterland in eastern Friesland (Fryslân) in the Netherlands. History
The village was first mentioned in 1232-1233 as "apud Backenvene", and means "raised bog of Bakke (person)".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/bakkeveen |title=Bakkeveen - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=2 April 2022 |language=nl}} Bakkeveen developed in the 13th century around the outpost Mariënhof of monastery {{ill|Mariëngaarde|nl}} in Hallum.{{cite web|url=https://www.frieslandwonderland.nl/plaats/bakkeveen |title=Bakkeveen |website=Friesland Wonderland |access-date=2 April 2022 |language=nl}}
In 1685, the Bakkeveense vaart was dug by the Drachtster Company to exploit the peat in the region. From 1732 onwards, the houses were moved to the canal by order of Jonkheer Tjaerd van Aylva.{{cite web|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu06_01/sten009monu06_01_0026.php |title=Blesdijke |author=Ronald Stenvert & Sabine Broekhoven |year=2000 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9476 4 |language=nl |access-date=2 April 2022}} A church was planned and a model had even been made, however it was never built.
Bakkeveen was home to 453 people in 1840.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/bakkeveen |title=Bakkeveen |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=2 April 2022 |language=nl}} The Dutch Reformed church was finally built in 1856 in neoclassic style. The {{ill|Slotplaats|nl}} was a farm built in 1818. In 1922, it was transformed into an estate by Baron {{ill|van Harinxma thoe Slooten|nl}}. The estate has a {{convert|200|ha}} forest. The estate was purchased by Vereniging Natuurmonumenten in 1997.
In the late-20th century, the forests and heaths attracted recreational tourism to Bakkeveen.
