Folkert Lútsen Idsinga ({{IPA|nl|ˈfɔlkərt ˈɪtsɪŋɣaː}}; born 22 December 1971) is a Dutch tax lawyer and politician.
He was a partner at law firm Baker McKenzie, and he was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2021 general election on behalf of the conservative liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Idsinga left the House in September 2023 to switch to New Social Contract (NSC), and he was re-elected in November 2023. He became State Secretary for Tax Affairs and the Tax Administration in the Schoof cabinet in July 2024, but he resigned four months later over questions about his personal finances. Idsinga returned to the House in November 2024.
Early life and career
Idsinga was born in 1971 in the Friesland village Bakkeveen and studied fiscal economics at the University of Groningen, graduating in 1996.{{Cite news |url = https://www.lc.nl/friesland/Ook-Friese-belofte-van-Idsinga-VVD-in-Tweede-Kamer-26742258.html |date = 30 March 2021 |access-date = 29 May 2021 |website = Leeuwarder Courant |language = nl |last = Van Westhreenen |first = Saskia |title = Ook Folkert Idsinga (VVD) doet de belofte in het Fries in Tweede Kamer |trans-title = Folkert Idsinga (VVD) also takes affirmation in Frisian in the House of Representatives }}{{Cite press release |url = https://www.rug.nl/news/2021/04/1-op-de-10-kamerleden-studeerde-in-groningen |date = 8 April 2021 |language = nl |access-date = 29 May 2021 |website = Rijksuniversiteit Groningen |title = 1 op de 10 kamerleden studeerde in Groningen |trans-title = 1 in 10 House members have studied in Groningen }} He worked for the accounting firm Arthur Andersen until he took a job at the law firm Baker & McKenzie in 2002. After the PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB formed the Schoof cabinet, Idsinga was sworn in as State Secretary for Tax Affairs and the Tax Administration on 2 July 2024.{{Cite news |url = https://nos.nl/collectie/13962/artikel/2524397-zuidas-accountant-folkert-idsinga-wordt-nsc-staatssecretaris-belastingzaken |date = 13 June 2024 |access-date = 13 June 2024 |language = nl |website = NOS |title = Zuidas-accountant Folkert Idsinga wordt NSC-staatssecretaris belastingzaken |trans-title = Zuidas accountant Folkert Idsinga will be NSC's tax affairs state secretary }}{{Cite news |url = https://nos.nl/collectie/13962/artikel/2527025-ministers-en-staatssecretarissen-kabinet-schoof-beedigd |date = 2 July 2024 |access-date = 2 July 2024 |language = nl |website = NOS |title = Ministers en staatssecretarissen kabinet-Schoof beëdigd |trans-title = Ministers and state secretaries of Schoof cabinet sworn in }} His portfolio included taxation, financial relations with lower governments, state ownership of Holland Casino and {{ill|Nederlandse Loterij|nl}}, and Domains Movable Property.{{Cite web |url = https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/regering/bewindspersonen/folkert-idsinga |website = Government of the Netherlands |language = nl |access-date = 6 July 2024 |title = Folkert Idsinga }} Idsinga was tasked with steering the 2025 Tax Plan, part of the overall budget, through the parliament, including the Senate where the governing coalition lacked a majority. The plan included a sales tax increase on hotel stays, sports, culture, books, and newspapers from 9% to 21%. Opposition parties in the Senate demanded in early October 2024 that this measure would be separated from the Tax Plan, allowing parties to vote differently on the two issues, but Idsinga refused to comply.{{Cite news |url = https://fd.nl/politiek/1533568/kabinet-weigert-btw-verhoging-in-apart-wetsvoorstel-te-gieten |url-access = subscription |date = 11 October 2024 |last1 = Berentsen |first1 = Laurens |last2 = Wolzak |first2 = Martine |access-date = 16 October 2024 |language = nl |website = Het Financieele Dagblad |title = Kabinet negeert btw-motie Eerste Kamer: 'Ongekend' |trans-title = Cabinet ignores Senate sales tax motion: 'Unheard of' }}{{Cite news |url = https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2024/12/06/dossier-btw-hoe-het-kabinet-blijft-worstelen-om-de-senaat-mee-te-krijgen-a4875822 |url-access = subscription |date = 6 December 2024 |last = De Haan |first = Marko |access-date = 7 December 2024 |language = nl |website = NRC |title = Dossier btw: hoe het kabinet blijft worstelen om de senaat mee te krijgen |trans-title = Sales tax file: How the cabinet still struggles to get Senate support }}
In October 2024, PVV leader Geert Wilders joined opposition parties in demanding transparency about Idsinga's retirement savings, which included business interests and could create conflicts of interest. His savings, valued at over €6 million in 2023, were managed by a foundation for the duration of his term, and Idsinga refused to provide more visibility, citing his privacy.{{Cite news |url = https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2024/10/30/waarin-belegde-staatssecretaris-idsinga-fiscaliteit-zijn-pensioen-tweede-kamer-wil-meer-helderheid-wegens-mogelijke-belangenverstrengeling-a4871243 |url-access = subscription |date = 30 October 2024 |last = De Haan |first = Marko |access-date = 30 October 2024 |language = nl |website = NRC |title = Waarin belegde staatssecretaris Idsinga (Fiscaliteit) zijn pensioen?
