Global Research Identifier Database (GRID) is a database of educational and research organizations worldwide, created and maintained by Digital Science & Research Solutions Ltd., part of the technology company Digital Science.{{cite web|url=https://www.digital-science.com/blog/news/digital-science-launches-grid-a-new-global-open-database-offering-unique-information-on-research-organisations/|title=Digital Science Launches GRID, a New, Global, Open Database Offering Unique Information on Research Organisations|last=Wheeler|first=Laura|date=12 October 2015|website=digital-science.com|language=en-GB|access-date=31 August 2018}}{{cite web|url=https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P2427|title=GRID ID|website=wikidata.org|access-date=31 August 2018}} In 2021 public releases of the database were discontinued in favor of Research Organization Registry (ROR) as the leading open organization identifier.{{cite web |last1=Kundu |first1=Suze |title=GRID passes the torch to ROR |website=Digital Science |url=https://www.digital-science.com/press-release/grid-passes-torch-to-ror/}}
Each organization is assigned a unique GRID ID, and there is a corresponding web address and page for each ID in the database. The dataset contains the institution's type, geo-coordinates, official website, and Wikipedia page. Name variations of institutions are included, as well.{{cite web|url=https://www.grid.ac/pages/disambiguate_your_data|title=DISAMBIGUATE – Resolve unstructured text affiliations to GRID ids|website=grid.ac|language=en-GB|access-date=30 August 2018}}
The first public release of GRID occurred on 22 September 2015, and it contained entries for {{formatnum:47648}} institutes. The 30th public release of GRID was on 27 August 2018, and the database contained {{formatnum:89506}} entries.{{cite web|url=https://www.grid.ac/downloads|title=DOWNLOAD – Documentation – All releases|date=27 August 2018|website=grid.ac/downloads|language=en-GB|access-date=31 August 2018}} It is available in the Resource Description Framework (RDF) specification as linked data, and can therefore be linked to other data.{{cite web|url=https://www.digital-science.com/blog/news/digital-sciences-grid-now-available-linked-open-data/|title=Digital Science's GRID Now Available As Linked Open Data|last=Szomszor|first=Martin|date=15 August 2016|website=digital-science.com|language=en-GB|access-date=2018-08-31}} Containing {{formatnum:14401}} relationships, GRID models two types of relationships: a parent-child relationship that defines a subordinate association, and a related relationship that describes other associations{{cite web|url=https://grid.ac/stats|title=GRID Statistics|website=grid.ac/stats|language=en-GB|access-date=26 October 2018}}{{cite web|url=https://grid.ac/pages/policies|title=GRID Policies|website=grid.ac|language=en-GB|access-date=26 October 2018}}
In December 2016, Digital Science released GRID under a Creative Commons CC0 licence — without restriction under copyright or database law.{{cite news|url=http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/Digest/Digital-Science-Gives-GRID-a-CC0-License-115138.asp|title=Digital Science Gives GRID a CC0 License|last=Scardilli|first=Brandi|date=6 December 2016|work=Information Today|language=en-US|access-date=31 August 2018}}{{cite web|url=https://www.digital-science.com/press-releases/digital-science-releases-global-research-identifier-database-grid-cc0-license/|title=Digital Science Releases Global Research Identifier Database (GRID) Under CC0 License|last=Wheeler|first=Laura|last2=Hulme|first2=Lisa|date=5 December 2016|website=digital-science.com|language=en-GB|access-date=26 October 2018}}
The database is available for download as a ZIP archive, which includes the entire database in JSON and CSV file formats.
From all the sources from which it draws information, including funding datasets, Digital Science claims that GRID covers 92% of institutions.{{cite web|url=http://org-id.guide/list/XI-GRID|title=org-id.guide – Global Research Identifiers Database (XI-GRID)|website=org-id.guide|language=en|access-date=26 October 2018}}{{cite web|url=https://www.ebi.ac.uk/miriam/main/datatypes/MIR:00000593|title=Identifiers.org – Data collection: GRID|website=www.ebi.ac.uk|language=en-GB|access-date=26 October 2018}}
