Following the recording of a demo called Extirpate in 1986, Fall of Because disbanded and reformed in 1988 as Godflesh.{{cite web|last=Birchmeier|first=Jason|title=Justin Broadrick artist biography|url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/justin-broadrick-mn0000838180/biography|website=AllMusic|accessdate=February 9, 2018}} Life Is Easy incorporates many of those early demo tracks, which were recorded when Justin Broadrick was only sixteen. Dimitri Nasrallah of Exclaim! called Fall of Because's output "eerily ahead of its time".{{cite web|last=Nasrallah|first=Dimitri|title=Justin Broadrick Napalm Death – Godflesh – Techno Animal – Jesu – Pale Sketcher|url=https://exclaim.ca/music/article/justin_broadrick-napalm_death-godflesh-techno_animal-jesu-pale_sketcher|work=Exclaim!|accessdate=February 9, 2018}}
Released eleven years after Fall of Because turned into Godflesh, Life Is Easy was recorded partially in studio and partially live.{{Cite AV media notes |title=Life Is Easy |type=CD liner notes |others=Fall of Because |year=1999 |url=https://www.discogs.com/Fall-Of-Because-Life-Is-Easy/release/421577 |access-date=April 4, 2018 |publisher=Invisible Records |id=INV 9042}} The first eight tracks were recorded and mixed at Rich Bitch studios in Birmingham, England in November 1986. Tracks 9, 10, and 11 were recorded live, with the latter two comprising complete Fall of Because shows.{{cite web|title=Fall of Because Discography|url=http://www.godflesh.com/projects/fob/|website=godflesh.com|publisher=Crumbling Flesh|accessdate=February 9, 2018}}
The songs "Devastator" and "Life Is Easy" were rerecorded in 1989 and used in Godflesh's debut studio album, Streetcleaner. "Merciless" was rerecorded in 1994 and became the title track of a Godflesh EP. A segment of the show titled "Xmas Special" appeared as the intro of the Godflesh song "Love, Hate (Slugbaiting)" from their 1992 album Pure.{{Cite AV media notes |title=Pure |type=CD liner notes |others=Godflesh |year=1992 |url=https://www.discogs.com/Godflesh-Pure/master/13226 |access-date=April 4, 2018 |publisher=Earache Records |id=MOSH32}} Since Broadrick acted as a physical drummer in Fall of Because, there is notable difference between those early demos and the final Godflesh songs, which employ programmed drum machines and slower, more grinding tempos.
