NASA Astronaut Group 16 ("The Sardines") was a group of 44 astronauts announced by NASA on May 1, 1996.{{cite web |last1=Campion |first1=Ed |last2=Herring |first2=Kyle |author1-link=NASA Headquarters |author2-link=Johnson Space Center |title=Release 96-84: NASA Selects Astronaut Class of 1996 |url=https://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/1996/96-84.txt |website=NASA News |publisher=NASA |access-date=15 May 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210515113332/https://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/1996/96-84.txt |archive-date=15 May 2021 |format=TXT |date=1 May 1996 |url-status=live}} The class was nicknamed "The Sardines" for being such a large class, humorously implying that their training sessions would be as tightly packed as sardines in a can.{{cite web |last1=Shekhtman |first1=Svetlana |title=Newly Named Asteroids Reflect Contributions of Pioneering Astronauts |url=https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2021/newly-named-asteroids-reflect-contributions-of-pioneering-astronauts |website=Humans in Space |publisher=NASA |access-date=15 May 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210515113125/https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2021/newly-named-asteroids-reflect-contributions-of-pioneering-astronauts/ |archive-date=15 May 2021 |date=16 March 2021 |url-status=live}} These 44 candidates compose the largest astronaut class to date. NASA selected so many candidates in preparation for the anticipated need for ISS crew members, along with regular shuttle needs. Nine of the 44 astronauts selected were from other countries, including 1 each from 5 Europe nations and 2 each from Canada and Japan.

Three members of this group, William C. McCool, David M. Brown, and Laurel B. Clark, died in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, during STS-107.{{cite news |last1=Hull |first1=Anne |title=Obituary for William C.
