Gladys Yeo of NME described Nmixx as "vocal powerhouses", describing their vocal skills as "unparalleled" within their generation of K-Pop.{{Cite web|title=NMIXX – 'expérgo' review: K-pop vocal powerhouses finally tap into their potential|url=https://www.nme.com/reviews/album/nmixx-expergo-album-review-3418167|work=NME|language=en|last=Yeo|first=Gladys|date=March 22, 2023|access-date=November 29, 2024|archive-date=March 23, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230323054929/https://www.nme.com/reviews/album/nmixx-expergo-album-review-3418167|url-status=live}} Likewise, Mary Siroky of Consequence said that Nmixx "often" delivers "great vocal performances".{{Cite web|title=Fan Chant: NMIXX Are Keeping Us on Our Toes|url=https://consequence.net/2024/08/nmixx-fe304-stick-out-interview-fan-chant/|work=Consequence|language=en|last=Siroky|first=Mary|date=August 21, 2024|access-date=November 30, 2024|archive-date=December 2, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241202085728/https://consequence.net/2024/08/nmixx-fe304-stick-out-interview-fan-chant/|url-status=live}} Despite the praise towards their vocals, Nmixx's signature style of music, termed "Mixxpop" or "Mixx Pop" (stylized in all caps), has been controversial.{{Cite web|title=Meeting NMIXX: K-pop's polarising new girl band|url=https://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/57227/1/nmixx-k-pop-band-interview-oo-dice-lily-haewon-bae-jinni-sullyoon-jiwoo-kyuin|work=Dazed|language=en|last=Glasby|first=Taylor|date=October 18, 2022|access-date=November 29, 2024|archive-date=October 18, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221018120947/https://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/57227/1/nmixx-k-pop-band-interview-oo-dice-lily-haewon-bae-jinni-sullyoon-jiwoo-kyuin|url-status=live}}
Taylor Glasby of Dazed said that Nmixx's debut single, "O.O", had "choppy arrangement" and "loosely structured lyrics", making note of the fact that ten lyricists were credited for the track. Glasby wrote that the song created "the biggest ruckus of 2022 [...] across the entire breadth of the K-pop community". Lily said that the reception towards the song was "sometimes sad and hard to read about," but also stated that "mixed opinions are better than no opinions". Writing for Mnet Plus Magazine, Park Soojin said that Mixxpop was less accessible to the public due to "combining vastly different genres into a single song".{{Cite web|title=[NMIXX] K-POP is now traversing between creation and recreation, forging its own path - PLUS MAGAZINE ORIGINAL|url=https://poc.mnetplus.world/plusmagazine/en/plusmagazineoriginal/detail/11|work=Mnet Plus Magazine|language=en|last=Park|first=Soojin|date=May 29, 2023|access-date=November 29, 2024|archive-date=December 1, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241201144308/https://poc.mnetplus.world/plusmagazine/en/plusmagazineoriginal/detail/11|url-status=live}} Both Yeo and Park said that Nmixx's 2023 EP Expérgo offered a more public-friendly version of Mixxpop.
