The Melon Music Awards ({{langx|ko|멜론 뮤직어워드}}) is a major music awards show that is held annually by Kakao Entertainment (a Kakao company) through its online music store Melon. The event was initially a fan-voted award conducted entirely online from 2005 through 2008, and has been officially held offline in Seoul since 2009.{{cite web |last1=Park |first1=Gun-wook |title='제 1회 멜론 뮤직어워드', 성공가능성 쐈다 |url=http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?idxno=2009121622245279172 |website=Asia's Economy |date=December 17, 2009 |access-date=December 7, 2020 |language=ko |archive-date=February 24, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210224230720/http://www.asiae.co.kr/news/view.htm?idxno=2009121622245279172 |url-status=live }}

The award show uses digital data from the Melon music platform—along with online voting and judges evaluation—to base its awards to artists who have had exceptional performance during the year.{{cite web |last1=Lee |first1=Jae-lim |title=Melon Music Awards will be virtual again this year |url=https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2021/10/21/entertainment/kpop/MMA-2021-Melon-Music-Awards-Dec-4/20211021095022623.html |website=Korea JoongAng Daily |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220410215643/https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2021/10/21/entertainment/kpop/MMA-2021-Melon-Music-Awards-Dec-4/20211021095022623.html|archive-date=10 April 2022 |access-date=21 May 2022 |url-status=live |language=en |date=21 October 2021}}

History

The awards show underwent a logo rebranding starting with the 2019 edition. 2020 Melon Music Awards was held for 4 days from December 2 to 5, dubbed as "MMA Week", and was broadcast online due to government restrictions imposed because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.{{cite web|url=https://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=410&aid=0000738446|script-title=ko:멜론뮤직어워드, 12월 첫째주 온라인 개최…MMA WEEK 진행(공식)|last=Son|first=Jin-ah|date=October 28, 2020|work=Sports Maekyung|language=ko|trans-title=(Official) Melon Music Awards, held online in the first week of December…Proceed with MMA Week|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201031235732/https://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=410&aid=0000738446|archive-date=October 31, 2020|access-date=December 7, 2020|via=Naver}}
