Reclining Buddha

A reclining Buddha is an image that represents Buddha lying down and is a major iconographic theme in Buddhist art. It represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, about to enter the parinirvana.{{Cite web|url=http://www.themindingcentre.org/dharmafarer/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/SD9-Mahaparinibbana-S-d16-part-2-piya.pdf|title=The Discourse on The Great Parinirvana|website=www.themindingcentre.org|page=140|access-date=2018-12-07}} He is lying on his right side, his head resting on a cushion or relying on his right elbow, supporting his head with his hand.

This pattern seems to have emerged at the same time as other representations of the Buddha in the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara.

For Thai Buddha attitudes ({{langx|th|ปางพระพุทธรูป}}; {{lang|th-Latn|pang phra phut ta rup}}), the reclining Buddha ({{langx|th|ปางไสยาสน์}}; {{lang|th-Latn|pang sai yat}}) can refer to three different episodes, whilst the attribute of each remains unclear.

  • Nirvana attitude ({{langx|th|ปางปรินิพพาน}}; {{lang|th-Latn|pang pari nipphan}})
  • Teaching the Rahu Asurin attitude ({{langx|th|ปางโปรดอสุรินทราหู}}; {{lang|th-Latn|pang prod asurintra hu}})
  • Sleeping attitude ({{langx|th|ปางทรงพระสุบิน}}; {{lang|th-Latn|pang song phra subin}})
