The Common Module Family (CMF) is a modular architecture concept jointly developed by car manufacturers Nissan and Renault through their Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance partnership.{{cite web |url=http://www.autonews.com/article/20140603/COPY01/306039973/how-ghosn-aims-to-catch-toyota-gm-vw |title=How Ghosn aims to catch Toyota, GM, VW |author1=McVeigh, Paul |author2=Gain, Bruce |work=autonews.com |publisher=Automotive News |date=3 June 2014 |accessdate=27 September 2014}}{{cite web |url=http://www.motortrader.com.my/news/modular-architecture-for-renault-nissan-alliance-models/ |title=Modular architecture for Renault Nissan Alliance models |publisher=Motor Trader |date=8 July 2014 |accessdate=27 September 2014}} The concept covers a wide range of vehicle platforms.{{cite web |url=http://europe.autonews.com/article/20141110/ANE/141109867/how-renault-is-cutting-costs-through-more-synergies-with-nissan|title=How Renault is cutting costs through more synergies with Nissan |author=Gibbs, Nick |work=autonews.com |date=7 November 2014 |publisher=Automotive News |accessdate=28 February 2015}}{{Cite web|title=COMMON MODULE FAMILY (CMF): A NEW APPROACH TO ENGINEERING FOR THE RENAULT-NISSAN ALLIANCE|url=https://www.alliance-2022.com/news/common-module-family-cmf-a-new-approach-to-engineering-for-the-renault-nissan-alliance/|access-date=2020-11-24|website=The Alliance - Renault Nissan Mitsubishi|language=en-US}}
Main features
CMF is aimed at reducing manufacturing costs and competing with similar previous concepts as Volkswagen Group's MQB. It consists of five groups of interchangeable, compatible modules: engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical/electronic. According to the companies involved in the development, CMF is not a conventional platform but rather a manufacturing system which can be applied to different vehicles.{{cite web |url=http://www.nissan-global.com/EN/NEWS/2013/_STORY/130619-01-e.html |title=Common Module Family (CMF): A new approach to engineering for the Renault–Nissan Alliance |publisher=Nissan |date=19 June 2013 |accessdate=26 September 2014}} The actual platforms are built combining a limited set of common modules: a single module can be used for different platforms, covering different classes of vehicles, and so allowing a greater standardisation of components between both Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi.{{cite web |url=http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/64538/renault-nissan-announce-cmf-modular-architecture |title=Renault-Nissan announce CMF modular architecture |author=Phillips, Tom |publisher=Haymarket Consumer Media |date=19 June 2013 |accessdate=1 March 2015}}
Applications
The Renault–Nissan Alliance announced various variants developed using CMF, which are CMF-C (D for large and mid-sized vehicles; examples are the third-generation Nissan X-Trail and the second-generation Nissan Qashqai), CMF-B for subcompacts/supermini, CMF-A for smaller vehicles, and CMF-EV for alliance wide BEV. The CMF will initially be used in approximately 14 vehicle models worldwide with an estimated production of 1.6 million units annually.{{cite web|author=Moss, Darren|date=19 June 2013|title=Renault-Nissan Alliance announces Common Module Family|url=http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/renault-nissan-alliance-announces-common-module-family|accessdate=26 September 2014|work=autocar.co.uk|publisher=Autocar}} The first CMF vehicles were introduced through 2013 with Nissan's CMF-C/D models.
Dacia, Datsun, Dongfeng, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, and Venucia have all used CMF platforms. Alpine and Lada are expected to begin using the platforms in 2025.
=CMF-A=
The CMF-A platform underpins various vehicles in the A-segment or city car segment.
