The Ringgold ID was introduced in 2003. Ringgold is an International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) registration agency,{{cite web|url=http://www.isni.org/content/orcid-begin-using-ringgold-registration-agency|title=ORCID to begin using Ringgold as Registration Agency|publisher=ISNI|accessdate=29 January 2018}} and as such the US National Information Standards Organization (NISO) recommended that Ringgold IDs be used to identify organizations involved in scholarly communications.
