The Scandinavian Masters was an annual golf tournament on the European Tour played in Sweden. In 2020, the tournament became co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour and was rebranded as the Scandinavian Mixed, in which both male and female golfers competed.{{cite web |url=https://www.sportbusiness.com/news/european-tour-partners-with-let-to-launch-mixed-golf-tournament/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191015205409/https://www.sportbusiness.com/news/european-tour-partners-with-let-to-launch-mixed-golf-tournament/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=October 15, 2019 |title=European Tour partners with LET to launch mixed golf tournament |work=Sport Business |access-date=2019-10-15}}
History
The tournament had its origins in the Volvo Open and the Scandinavian Enterprise Open, which, in 1973, became the first Swedish stop on the European Tour schedule. In 1991, the SEO merged with the PLM Open, with the resultant tournament being called the Scandinavian Masters.{{cite web |url=http://sgf.golf.se/extra/pod/?action=pod_show&id=54&module_instance=1 |title=International Tour Events |publisher=Svenska Golfförbundet |access-date=2008-11-17 }}{{dead link|date=December 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}{{cite book |url=http://www.e-magin.se/paper/1pfc350j/popup/1? |title=Golf - Den Stora Sporten' |language=sv |trans-title=Golf - the Great Sport|first=Anders |last=Jansson |publisher=Swedish Golf Federation 100 Years |date=2004 |isbn=91-86818007 |pages=236–239}}
The Scandinavian Masters was generally the only European Tour event to be held in Scandinavia, and in 2013 had a prize fund of {{currency|1,500,000|EUR}}, which was at the lower end of the scale for European Tour events held in the tour's home continent.
Until 2011, the tournament was played at the end of July or the beginning of August each year. For 2012, it moved to the first weekend in June, and was played from Wednesday to Saturday to allow players more time to travel to the following week's U.S. Open.{{usurped|1=[https://archive.today/20120912161549/http://www.swedishgolfonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1617&Itemid=576 Swedish Golf Online - Nordea Masters Makes "Majors" Announcement]}} From 2013 to 2017 it was played in late May/early June, two weeks before the U.S. Open, but in 2018 it was played in August.
In 2019 Lagardère Group passed management of the tournament on to the European Tour, which renamed it Scandinavian Invitation.
=Mixed event=
In 2020 the European Tour and Ladies European Tour created the Scandinavian Mixed hosted by Henrik and Annika, for the first time bringing 78 men and 78 women together to compete in the same tournament for the same prize money, but playing from different tees. Official World Golf Ranking points are offered for both tours, along with points toward the European Tour's and LET's respective season-long competitions, as well as Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup points, if applicable, which require the results to be divided between men and women.{{cite web |url=https://www.golfmagic.com/news/henrik-stenson-and-annika-s%C3%B6renstam-host-mixed-tournament |title=Henrik Stenson and Annika Sörenstam to host mixed tournament |work=GolfMagic |first=Jack |last=Seddon |date=14 October 2019 |access-date=4 December 2024}}
The first event was originally scheduled to take place in June 2020, however it was cancelled like many other events at the time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.{{cite web |url=https://www.europeantour.com/european-tour/news/articles/detail/statement-on-trophee-hassan-ii-and-scandinavian-mixed-hosted-by-henrik-and-annik/ |title=Coronavirus: Statement on Trophée Hassan II and Scandinavian Mixed hosted by Henrik and Annika |publisher=European Tour |date=6 April 2020 |access-date=6 April 2020}}
The event did return in June 2021, with Jonathan Caldwell winning the inaugural mixed event; shooting a final-round 64 to beat Adrián Otaegui by one shot. Alice Hewson was the highest placed female; finishing in third place.{{cite news |url=https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/golf/glory-in-gothenburg-as-jonathan-caldwell-celebrates-first-european-tour-victory-40533684.html |title=Glory in Gothenburg as Jonathan Caldwell celebrates first European Tour victory |date=13 June 2021 |newspaper=Belfast Telegraph |first=Phil |last=Casey |access-date=4 December 2024}}
The 2022 event created history as Linn Grant became the first woman to win on the European Tour. She won by nine strokes ahead of Henrik Stenson and Marc Warren. The next best-placed female was Gabriella Cowley, 14 strokes behind Grant.{{cite web |url=https://www.europeantour.com/dpworld-tour/news/articles/detail/grant-makes-history-with-superb-win-in-sweden/ |title=Grant makes history with amazing win in Sweden |date=12 June 2022 |publisher=European Tour |access-date=4 December 2024}}{{cite web |url=https://www.skysports.com/golf/news/12176/12632620/scandinavian-mixed-linn-grant-becomes-first-woman-to-win-on-dp-world-tour-after-dominant-victory |title=Scandinavian Mixed: Linn Grant becomes first woman to win on DP World Tour after dominant victory |date=12 June 2022 |work=Sky Sports |access-date=4 December 2024}} Linn Grant went on to win again in 2024, beating Calum Hill and Sebastian Söderberg by one shot.{{cite news |title=DP World Tour: Sebastian Soderberg hands Linn Grant victory after squandering eight-shot lead at Scandinavian Mixed |url=https://www.skysports.com/golf/news/12176/13150275/dp-world-tour-sebastian-soderberg-hands-linn-grant-victory-after-squandering-eight-shot-lead-at-scandinavian-mixed |access-date=2024-06-11 |work=Sky Sports |date=9 June 2024}} The 2024 event proved to be the final edition of the tournament and in October 2024 it was confirmed that the tournament would not return in 2025.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.golfbranschen.se/dp-world-tour-avstar-scandinavian-mixed-2025-vi-jobbar-pa-ett-helt-nytt-koncept/?utm_source=mailpoet&utm_medium=email&utm_source_platform=mailpoet&utm_campaign=veckans-nyheter-fran-golfbranschen-se-31-januari_54 |title=DP World Tour nobbar Scandinavian Mixed 2025: "Vi jobbar på ett helt nytt koncept" |trans-title=DP World Tour nobs Scandinavian Mixed 2025: "We are working on a completely new concept" |magazine=Golfbranschen |language=sv |first=Tommy |last=Jeppsson |date=18 October 2024 |access-date=4 December 2024}}
