Socket S1 is a 638 pin, low profile, ZIF, 1.27mm pitch socket.{{cite web|url=https://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/31839.pdf|title=Low-Profile Socket S1 Design Specification|accessdate=2009-05-03|publisher=amd.com}} It replaces the existing Socket 754 in the mobile computing segment (e.g. laptops) as well as the microPGA Socket 563 form factor.
Socket S1 CPUs can include support for dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM, dual-core mobile CPUs, and virtualization technology, and compete with the mobile Intel Core 2 processor series.{{cite web|url=https://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_13909_13911,00.html|title=AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology Competitive Comparison|accessdate=2009-05-03|publisher=amd.com}}
