=First steps of Tagalog Wikipedia=
The first article created in the Tagalog Wikipedia (aside from Unang Pahina or the main page) is about Wikipedia. It was created on March 25, 2004. During the times when Tagalog Wikipedia's standards on articles were not strict, the first featured article was Livestrong wristband, but this was replaced by the article kimika (chemistry) in line with the revised standards.{{cite web|author=Česky |url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Mga_napiling_artikulo&direction=next&oldid=22753 |title=From the archive of the Tagalog Wikipedia |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}} But kimika along with the second featured article wiki were eventually replaced by a review process.{{cite web|url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3APagbabalik-tanaw_sa_mga_napiling_artikulo&diff=190910&oldid=187843 |title=From the review of Kimika on the Tagalog Wikipedia, Marso 25-26, 2008 |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}}{{cite web|author=Česky |url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Mga_napiling_artikulo&direction=next&oldid=33192 |title=From the history of the Wikipedia:Mga napiling artikulo |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}} Technically, the very first featured article that survived the review process is about keso (cheese).{{cite web|author=Česky |url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Mga_napiling_artikulo&direction=next&oldid=33368 |title=From the history of the Wikipedia:Mga napiling artikulo |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}}
The File:Flutterbye.jpg was the first featured picture for the article paru-parong Viceroy (Viceroy butterfly). Because the file was deleted, it was replaced by File:St Vitus stained glass.jpg for the article Katedral ng San Vitus (St. Vitus Cathedral).{{cite web|url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Supnayan_ng_mga_nagdaang_napiling_larawan&direction=next&oldid=32917 |title=From the archive of the Tagalog Wikipedia |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}} The featured picture archive lists File:Viceroy Butterfly.jpg as the first featured picture.
The first three articles that appeared in Alam Ba Ninyo? (Did you know?) were web browser (en), Wikang Bulgaro (Bulgarian language) and Pilipinas (Philippines).{{cite web|url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:UnangPahinaAlam&oldid=14215 |title=From the history of template of Alam Ba Ninyo? |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}} There was a section entitled On This Day at the main page on 2 April 2008, but this was hidden on 3 May 2008, because of lack of contributors of this section.{{cite web|url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Mga_pangyayari_noong_unang_panahon&oldid=193523 |title=From the history of Wikipedia:Mga pangyayari noong unang panahon |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}}{{cite web|author=Česky |url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Unang_Pahina&oldid=201870 |title=From the history of Unang Pahina |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |date=2011-08-24 |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}}
Characteristics
The Tagalog Wikipedia has several characteristics which define it differently from other language editions of Wikipedia. According to Michael Tan, a Filipino anthropologist and Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist, the Tagalog Wikipedia greatly depends on the UP Diksyonaryong Filipino for basic definitions.{{cite news|url=http://opinion.inquirer.net/9149/%E2%80%98utak%E2%80%99 |title=Pinoy Kasi: 'Utak' |last=Tan |first= Michael |author-link=Michael Tan |newspaper=Philippine Daily Inquirer |date=2 August 2011|access-date=23 October 2015}} Though focused on the Tagalog language, it has pages that helps non-Tagalog speakers on anything related about the online project.{{cite news|url=http://globalnation.inquirer.net/120098/hold-up-half-the-sky-not-there-yet |title=The Artist Abroad: Hold up half the sky? Not there yet |last=Francia |first=Luis |newspaper=Philippine Daily Inquirer |date=27 March 2015|access-date=23 October 2015}}
=Coverage=
The Tagalog Wikipedia has significant coverage of topics related to the Philippines, as well as anime and manga-related topics. In 2010, GMA News and Public Affairs released a report criticizing the Tagalog Wikipedia's lack of science-related articles.{{cite news|url=http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/202631/scitech/google-translate-spews-profanities-in-filipino |title=Google Translate spews profanities in Filipino |last1=Dimacali |first1= Timothy James M. |author-link1=TJ Dimacali |newspaper=GMA News |date=5 October 2010}}
=Project name=
According to Wikipedians from the Tagalog and English Wikipedias, the Tagalog Wikipedia also represents the Filipino language.:tl:Wikipedia:Pamantayang pangwika; :tl:Wikipedia:Gabay sa abakada at pagbabaybay{{cite web|url=http://tl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Kapihan&oldid=352405 |title=Wikipedia:Kapihan: "Filipino Wikipedia (on Wikimedia Incubator)" |publisher=Tl.wikipedia.org |access-date=2012-02-15|language=tl}}Kaugnay: The Filipino Wiktionary Debate (formerly It's official) (WP:Tambay Archive14) According to the Vibal Foundation, a foundation that started WikiPilipinas, the Tagalog Wikipedia is different from WikiFilipino, the wiki that they manage because WikiFilipino uses Filipino language while Tagalog Wikipedia uses Tagalog language.{{cite web|url=http://www.vibalfoundation.org/?p=16 |title=WikiFilipino, Isang Pagsusuri |work=Kristine Mandigma |publisher=Vibal Foundation |access-date=2009-05-15}} {{dead link|date=October 2015}} The difference or sameness of Tagalog and Filipino sparked a debate among Tagalog Wikipedians about the name of the project. This debate was mentioned in an article by DILA (Defenders of the Indigenous Languages of the Archipelago),{{cite web|url=http://www.dila.ph/subdialect_filipino.pdf |title=The Subdialect Filipino |work=Guerrero de la Paz |publisher=Defenders of the Indigenous Languages of the Archipelago |access-date=2009-05-15}} an organization that defends indigenous languages of the Philippines.
