McGrath
Because there has been some vandalism (I think it's fair to use that word) that makes confused accusations about the Augustinians and Father Richard McGrath, I'll note here that the first complaints against McGrath were made circa January 2018. By then Prevost had been in Peru for more than 3 years.{{cite news | access-date = 7 September 2023 | url = https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-providence-catholic-mcgrath-sex-abuse-lawsuit-20190327-story.html | work = Chicago Tribune | title =Where is Father McGrath? {{Edit extended-protected|Pope Leo XIV|answered=yes}}
Pope Leo XIV is the FIRST Augustinian Pope - specifically he is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). The previous Popes whom are being called Augustinians here belong to different Augustinian Order that have nothing to do with this specific order (i.e. O.S.A.). Eugene IV, for example, belongs to the Canon Regulars of St. Augustine (Confederation of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine or C.R.S.A.). It's completely different.

Pope Leo will continue Francis’ legacy as a steward of climate change. Since Pope Adrian IV is the now the first pope from an English-speaking country and Leo XIV is the second pope from such a country, this sentence below should be modified.
From this:
, the first from an English-speaking country since Adrian IV in the 12th century,
To this:
, the second from an English-speaking country, since Pope Adrian IV in the 12th century,
...or something similar, the word 'first' is deceiving, in my opinion. I also think Adrian IV should be changed to Pope Adrian IV ChuckDabs (talk) 23:54, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

Ancestry clarification request for Pope Robert Francis Prevost
Hello, I would like to request a revision to the ancestry description on this page. The current Wikipedia entry states that Pope Robert Francis Prevost has "Afro-Haitian" ancestry. However, extensive genealogical and primary source records show that his maternal lineage is Louisiana Creole—not Haitian.
Key documentation:
- His maternal grandmother, Louise Baquié Martinez, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1868 to Ferdinand Baquié and Eugenie Grandbois. She appears as "Mulatto" in the 1870 U.S. Census. [https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/7163/records/32717096 1870 U.S. Census – Louise Baquié]
- Her father, Ferdinand Baquié, was also listed as "Mulatto" and born in Louisiana. [https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/6500/records/58235 1870 U.S. Census – Ferdinand Baquié]
- Her husband (the Pope’s grandfather), Joseph Martinez, was born in Louisiana and appears as "Mulatto" in several censuses. A widely circulated immigration record for “E. Martinez” arriving from Haiti in 1866 has been mistakenly attributed to him—but census and residency records confirm that Jacques Martinez, born around 1822 and residing in Ward 7 of New Orleans as a tailor, is the correct paternal ancestor. [https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/7163/records/32709893 1870 U.S. Census – Jacques Martinez]
This aligns with the findings reported in this [https://www.nola.com/news/first-american-pope-roots-new-orleans/article_3c7bfdf1-8f69-452e-af01-90aa012366df.html New Orleans Advocate article], which confirms the Pope's grandparents were married in New Orleans in 1887 and identifies New Orleans—not Haiti—as the family's generational home.
There is no verified evidence that Pope Prevost’s maternal line descends from Haiti. His Louisiana Creole ancestry includes African, French, and Spanish roots, as documented in both public census and vital records.
For historical accuracy, I propose revising “Afro-Haitian” to reflect the correct description:
- “Louisiana Creole of African, French, and Spanish descent.”**

:::You are correct, I have removed the claim that he is the seventh from the page. I can't find any sources that mention it, and it should stay out until proven otherwise. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 18:45, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::@Ganesha811: I noticed you restored it. Do you have a source that says he is the seventh? I tried looking but couldn't find one. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 18:51, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::I'll try to find it, it was in an article from a Catholic publication I saw. —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:53, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::He seems to be the seventh Augustinian but the second one from the OSA. Eugene IV was indeed the last Augustinian and also the first from the OSA, before him was Gregory VIII. RogueJMS (talk) 19:41, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::Pinging @Scu ba and GN22 into this conversation as well. I removed it again (final time for me) since most sources don't seem to mention Augustine in the other Pope's biographies, but I may be missing something since I'm not familiar with the Catholic divisions. Vatican News mentions Leo XIV as the "First Augustinian Pope" https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2025-05/biography-of-robert-francis-prevost-pope-leo-xiv.html ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 19:39, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::This requires you to do more than the bare minimum and look up which rules these monasteries the older 11th and 12th century popes belonged to. Hint, it was the rule of St Augustine Scuba 19:41, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Ok, I see what you mean. I feel like mentioning the OSA specifically, as proposed by Ganesha below, should be sufficient. I don't believe it's necessary to mention whether he was sixth/seventh/eight/whatever because most (if not all) news reports mention him as first. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:10, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::The Vatican seems reliable enough for me. As long as we specify the OSA, that'll work. I've added it with the source. —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:42, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::If we get technical we need to count every Pope that followed St. Augustin's rule, so it's probably for the best to specify as first pope from OSA (apparently Eugene IV was from yet another separate order of Augustinians) RogueJMS (talk) 19:45, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::And @Richie1509 restored it again. Want to share you thoughts here? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:08, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::::I've modified it to a compromise, saying {{tq|He is the first pope to come from the Order of Saint Augustine, and the sixth Augustinian pope more generally}} with a note. I think that will work well. —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:13, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::Sounds good to me. Would still appreciate a source giving more detail about this though, given that we went from eight to seven to six, and back up to seven, and to the casual reader, it would appear to contradict the Vatican. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:24, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::One issue with the current wording is that other orders that are not in the Augustinian family follow the Rule of St. Augustine. For example, the Dominican order follows the Rule of St. Augustine, and there have been four Dominican popes as well. See https://opeast.org/about/our-order/rule-st-augustine/. A better way to phrase this would be "Although previous popes were from various Augustinian orders, such as the Norbertines or Canons Regular, Pope Leo XIV is the first who was a member of the Order of Saint Augustine." 198.234.109.153 (talk) 22:01, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::Ok, I think we should just leave out the numbering, and just leave "He is the first pope to come from the Order of Saint Augustine." It appears that the [https://apnews.com/article/conclave-pope-francis-cardinals-vatican-d7991a37a679f09792ed220cc1f6bbed Associated Press] also wrote that there were seven Augustinian popes, but later issued a correction, writing {{tq|This story has corrected the number of Augustinian popes. Vatican News says Pope Leo XIV is the first Augustinian pope, not the seventh.}} ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:41, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::::Oh, sorry. So Eugene IV was not a Augustinian? Sorry if I added it back Richie1509 (talk) 20:47, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::No it's all good. How it looks now is fine. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 20:48, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::Thanks Richie1509 (talk) 20:49, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::::No, Eugene IV was never an Augustinian, and [https://web.archive.org/web/20160304121248/http://augnet.org/default.asp?ipageid=2043 there is an Augustinian-affiliated source] which explicitly denies this. He was a member of St. George monastery and prayed with some Augustinians.
:::::::::::Leo XIV is definitely also not "the seventh from orders following the Rule of St. Augustine". Since we already went over this - many, many orders follow the "Rule of St. Augustine" including Dominicans, so there would be a lot more than seven at this point! 2600:8800:1E8F:BE00:7E49:2F8B:A767:8DFE (talk) 01:13, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::This footnote is also wrong: "other orders which are considered Augustinian, or following the Rule of Saint Augustine" -- some other orders are considered Augustinian because they are members of the Augustinian family, and also they happen to follow his Rule. There are orders which are not Augustinian and not members of the family which also follow his Rule! This is an important distinction -- just because an order follows his Rule does not make it Augustinian. For example, the Sisters of Mercy follow the Rule of St. Augustine, but nobody considers them Augustinian, and there have probably been no popes from this order. 2600:8800:1E8F:BE00:7E49:2F8B:A767:8DFE (talk) 01:23, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

{{Edit extended-protected|Pope Leo XIV|answered=yes}}

::1. Remove "He is the seventh Augustinian to have become Pope."
::2. Replace with: "He is the first Pope from the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A)."
::PS: I used to be a member of the Order of St. Augustine before I left Catholicism so I personally know who he is. IapetusCallistus (talk) 18:59, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

= Augustinian or not? I know the Pope personally so I'll answer =
I've noticed that the article is going back and forth on whether Leo XIV is the 6th/7th Augustinian or not. Let me answer that since I used to be part of the Augustinian Order before I stopped being Catholic and I personally know the Pope. THIS IS THE DEFINITE ANSWER:
Leo XIV is the FIRST pope FROM the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). See the link: https://gcatholic.org/orders/006
The other Popes such as Eugene IV belongs to a DIFFERENT Augustinian-named order called the Confederation of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine (C.R.S.A.) which is different: https://gcatholic.org/orders/084
It's better to just say: He is the first Pope from the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.). IapetusCallistus (talk) 20:03, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:Thanks. Agree current intro is confusing in this regard and is not consistent with how Vatican News is describing him: “ The first Augustinian Pope” https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2025-05/biography-of-robert-francis-prevost-pope-leo-xiv.html BeaujolaisFortune (talk) 20:09, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:Agreed, the way you stated it is more clear anyways regardless of whether you have any sort of personal connection to the Pope or not. Gommeh ➡️ Talk to me 20:09, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
