Collaborating on F500 Articles

Hello Indefensible I noticed your interest on WP:Companies to improve Fortune 500 articles. I have COI with some of these companies. There are some errors and inaccuracies that need to be updated on those articles. Since I am familiar with the subject and I have COI, If I present content and verifiable secondary sources, would you be open to collaborating? I notice that you've generally been placing them at the bottom of the list of talk-page templates – however, according to WP:TALKORDER, {{tlf|ITN talk}} (#8) should go above WikiProject banners (#9). As such, would you mind adding the banners in the correct order for future talk pages? This would save extra effort for someone else to rearrange them to conform with our guidelines, and emphasises the ITN appearance a little more. In addition, you could also consider adding an {{para|oldid}} parameter to each template (with the corresponding revision ID of Template:In the news), which will allow readers easy access to the Main Page ITN template as it appeared at the time. Alternatively, it's also {{u|RscprinterBot}}'s job to add ITN banners to talk pages automatically if they're missing, although you're still more than welcome to do so yourself. Usually, you can quickly identify this from the admins' edit summaries. If you click on the corresponding timestamp, the revision ID will be the number that follows "&oldid=" in the URL. You can then use this number in the {{tlf|ITN talk}} parameter. For example, we see that Joachim Yhombi-Opango was added to ITN on 18:02, 31 March 2020 (this might differ based on your time zone settings). MediaWiki will use a newer version of Unicode. Some characters that did not have an upper case equivalent before do now. Titles beginning with one of these characters will be moved. A list of these titles can be seen on Phabricator. The titles will be renamed by the user Maintenance script. This will start on 13 April 2020. Problems

There was a problem with the Wikidata database last week. Some wikis went down for twenty minutes. Wikidata and other projects showed error messages. Interwiki links were not shown, some tools did not work and other problems. Some of this was fixed quickly. The developers are working on fixing the rest. Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Problems

There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a [https://wikimedia.github.io/wikipedia-kaios/sim.html simulator] so you can see what it looks like.

The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "{{int:discussiontools-preference-label}}" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.

Problems

You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on [https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20210323T06 {{#time:j xg|2021-03-23|{{PAGELANGUAGE}}}} at 06:00 (UTC)]. This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.

Recent changes

Some very old web browsers don’t work well with the Wikimedia wikis. Some old code for browsers that used to be supported is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T277803]

Problems

When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split. It might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T278350]

Editors can collapse part of an article so you have to click on it to see it. When you click a link to a section inside collapsed content it will now expand to show the section. Twinkle is a gadget on English Wikipedia. It can help with maintenance and patrolling. It can now be used on other wikis. You can get Twinkle on your wiki using the [https://github.com/wikimedia-gadgets/twinkle-starter twinkle-starter] GitHub repository.

Problems

The content translation tool did not work for many articles for a little while. This was because of a bug. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T281346]

Reference Previews will become a default feature on a number of wikis on 5 May. This is later than planned because of some changes. You can use it without using Page Previews if you want to. The Wikimedia movement has been using IRC on a network called Freenode. There have been changes around who is in control of the network. The Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts have decided to move to the new Libera Chat network instead. This is not a formal decision for the movement to move all channels but most Wikimedia IRC channels will probably leave Freenode. There is a migration guide and ongoing Wikimedia discussions about this.

The Crew of SpaceX Crew-1 had a successful splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico on 2^nd May at 06:56:33 UTC. After they launched in November 2020 and had spent 167 days in space.

A LongMarch 5B rocket had an uncontrolled re-entery into the atmosphere on 4^th May. With any debris being reported to have landed in the Indian Ocean.

One of Rocket Labs Electron rockets expierienced a launch malfunction 2:30 into launch causing the mission to result in failure.

Images have been released after the landing of Zhurong rover on Mars on 14^th May.

Logged-in users on the mobile web can choose to use the advanced mobile mode. They now see categories in a similar way as users on desktop do. This means that some gadgets that have just been for desktop users could work for users of the mobile site too. If your wiki has such gadgets you could decide to turn them on for the mobile site too. AutoWikiBrowser is a tool to make repetitive tasks easier. It now uses JSON. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage has moved to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON and Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Config. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/Version has moved to Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/VersionJSON. The tool will eventually be configured on the wiki so that you don't have to wait until the new version to add templates or regular expression fixes. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T241196]

Problems

InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from archive.is to web.archive.org. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T283432]

The tool to find, add and remove templates will be updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It will come to the first wikis on 7 July. The tool to find, add and remove templates was updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It was supposed to come to the first wikis on 7 July. It was delayed to 12 July instead. It will come to more wikis later this year. A new version of MediaWiki came to the Wikimedia wikis the week before last week. This was not in Tech News because there was no newsletter that week.

Future changes

If you use the Monobook skin you can choose to switch off responsive design on mobile. This will now work for more skins. If {{int:monobook-responsive-label}} is unticked you need to also untick the new preference {{int:prefs-skin-responsive}}. Otherwise it will stop working. Interface admins can automate this process on your wiki. You can read more.

On 11^th July Virgin Galactic had their first fully crewed mission to the edge of space with Richard Branson onboard in SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity.

On 17^th July NASA announced that scientific observations from the Hubble Space Telescope had resumed on a backup computer after being placed in a "safe mode" since June 13.

On 20^th July Blue Origin had their first fully crewed mission to the edge of space with Jeff Bezos onboard in a New Shepard capsule.

On 26^th July The Pirs module was the first permanent ISS module to be decommissioned. After docking to the ISS on 17^th September 2001, just under 20 years ago.

On 29^th July The ISS was moved out of its normal orientation after the Nauka module (a new Russian module) was docked and started firing its thrusters.

Shuttle-Centaur

Shuttle-Centaur was a version of the Centaur upper stage rocket designed to be carried aloft inside the Space Shuttle. Two variants were developed: Centaur G-Prime and Centaur G. The powerful Centaur upper stage allowed for heavier deep space probes, and for them to reach Jupiter sooner. However, neither variant ever flew on a Shuttle.

Reminder: Wikimedia has migrated to the Libera Chat IRC network, from the old Freenode network. Local documentation should be updated.

Problems

Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 30 minutes. There was a problem with generating dynamic lists of articles on the Russian Wikinews, due to the bulk import of 200,000+ new articles over 3 days, which led to database problems. The problematic feature has been disabled on that wiki and developers are discussing if it can be fixed properly. Changes later this week

The team of the Wikipedia app for Android is working on communication in the app. The developers are working on how to talk to other editors and get notifications. You can read more. They are looking for users who want to test the plans. Any editor who has an Android phone and is willing to download the app can do this.

The Beta Feature for {{int:discussiontools-preference-label}} will be updated in the coming weeks. You will be able to subscribe to individual sections on a talk page at more wikis. You can test this now by adding ?dtenable=1 to the end of the talk page's URL ([https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta_talk:Sandbox?dtenable=1 example]).

You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287206]

A revision tag will soon be added to edits that add links to disambiguation pages. This is because these links are usually added by accident. On 12{{Sup|th}} August a GSLV Mk.2 rocket with the EOS-03 Earth observation satellite as a payload encountered a third stage failure and crashed back into the ground after reaching a maximum altitude of 140km (87 miles).

On 20{{Sup|th}} August a 5 hour 55 minute spacewalk was completed by chinese astronauts Nie Haisheng and Liu Boming on the Tiangong space station.

On 28{{Sup|th}} August an Astra rocket had an engine failure at launch, but managed to recover and fly to the upper atmosphere before leaving its flight corridor, resulting in flight temination.

ITN - 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest

Hello Indefensible, you had nominated 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest for the 'in the news' section. The laws have now been repealed by Parliament, although this still need to be signed by the President of India for the repeal to come into effect. Problems

MediaWiki 1.38-wmf.11 was scheduled to be deployed on some wikis last week. The deployment was delayed because of unexpected problems.

At all Wikipedias, a Mentor Dashboard is now available at Special:MentorDashboard. It allows registered mentors, who take care of newcomers' first steps, to monitor their assigned newcomers' activity. It is part of the Growth features. You can learn more about activating the mentor list on your wiki and about the mentor dashboard project.

There are now default short aliases for the "Project:" namespace on most wikis. E.g. On Wikibooks wikis, WB: will go to the local language default for the Project: namespace. This change is intended to help the smaller communities have easy access to this feature. Additional local aliases can still be requested via the usual process.
