The VAG Class DT3 is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg on the Nuremberg U-Bahn system. It is the first type of rolling stock on the Nuremberg U-Bahn that has gangways between the individual cars.{{cite book |last=Pabst |first=Martin |title=S-Bahn- und U-Bahn-Fahrzeuge in Deutschland |trans-title=S-Bahn and U-Bahn vehicles in Germany |edition=2nd |pages=74-77, 84, 85 |language=de |date=2006 |publisher=GeraMond |isbn=3-7654-7366-9}}

Formation

Every DT3 train consists of two permanently coupled cars, forming a twin-unit. The cars are connected with a gangway, allowing passengers to walk into the adjacent car. The trains are equipped with automatic couplers, enabling operation of up to two units together to form a four-car train.

Interior

Seating accommodation consists of transverse seating bays as well as folding seats. The trains have displays which show the name of the next station, and CCTV cameras. Passenger information screens and a passenger counting system are implemented in the DT3-F trains.{{cite web |author= |url=https://www.eurailpress.de/news/bahnbetrieb/single-view/news/vag-nuernberg-der-erste-dt3-f-ist-angekommen-1.html |title=VAG Nürnberg: Der erste DT3-F ist angekommen |trans-title=VAG Nürnberg: The first DT3-F has arrived |language=de |date=August 31, 2010 |website=eurailpress.de |publisher=DVV Media Group GmbH |access-date=November 5, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181106053357/https://www.eurailpress.de/news/bahnbetrieb/single-view/news/vag-nuernberg-der-erste-dt3-f-ist-angekommen-1.html |archive-date=November 6, 2018 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web |last=Grewe |first=Tilmann |url=http://www.nordbayern.de/ressorts/an-der-u-bahn-tur-wirdfast-jeder-gezahlt-1.1285446 |title=An der U-Bahn-Tür wird fast jeder gezählt |trans-title=Almost everyone gets counted at the subway door |language=de |date=June 7, 2011 |website=nordbayern.de |publisher=Verlag Nürnberger Presse Druckhaus Nürnberg GmbH & Co. Technical specifications

The car bodies are made out of aluminium, and the trains are powered by three-phase-asynchronous motors. As they are used in automatic operation, the DT3 trains are not equipped with full driving cabs, but only with small concealed driving panels, which are used for maintenance.{{cite web |url=https://www.metro-report.com/news/metro/single-view/view/rubin-moves-into-testing-phase.html |title=Rubin moves into testing phase |author= |date=February 1, 2005 |website=metro-report.com |publisher=Metro Report International |access-date=November 3, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181106132128/https://www.metro-report.com/news/metro/single-view/view/rubin-moves-into-testing-phase.html |archive-date=November 6, 2018 |url-status=dead}} The DT3-F trains are equipped with full driving cabs, enabling them to be used on driver operated services on non-automated lines. The cabs are designed to be removed in case of a conversion for fully automated operation.{{cite web |url=http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/nuernberg-dt3-f-arrives.html |author= |title=Nürnberg DT3-F metro train arrives |date=September 17, 2010 |website=railwaygazette.com |publisher=Railway Gazette International|access-date=November 3, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181106171507/https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/nuernberg-dt3-f-arrives.html |archive-date=November 6, 2018 |url-status=live}}

Besides the power supply by contact shoes, every unit is also equipped with a pantograph, as parts of the maintenance facilities are electrified with overhead lines.

History

The first unit was delivered in April 2004 as part of the "Rubin" project, which planned to introduce fully automated trains on the Nuremberg U-Bahn. Rubin is an acronym for Realisierung einer automatisierten U-Bahn in Nürnberg (Implementation of an automated U-Bahn in Nuremberg).{{cite web |url=https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/driverless-operations-start-in-nuernberg.html |author= |title=Driverless operations start in Nürnberg |date=May 6, 2008 |website=railwaygazette.com |publisher=Railway Gazette International|access-date=November 3, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160719022709/https://www.railwaygazette.com/news/single-view/view/driverless-operations-start-in-nuernberg.html |archive-date=July 19, 2016 |url-status=dead}}{{cite web |url=http://www.spiegel.de/reise/aktuell/vollautomatisch-im-untergrund-nuernberg-testet-erste-fahrerlose-u-bahn-a-452912.html |author= |title=Nürnberg testet erste fahrerlose U-Bahn |trans-title=Nuremberg is testing the first driverless subway |date=December 6, 2006 |website=spiegel.de |publisher=SPIEGEL ONLINE GmbH & Co.
