Founding
Washington first piqued his interest in NASCAR by attending the 1997 Daytona 500. He then convinced Erving to come on board, and they formed a team in the summer of 1997. The feelings were split about the new team, which at one time planned to field Winston Cup cars for Rich Bickle.{{Cite news|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1998-jan-14-sp-8175-story.html|title=Minority Team Owned in Part by Dr. J to Compete in NASCAR|last=GLICK|first=SHAV|date=1998-01-14|newspaper=Los Angeles Times|language=en-US|issn=0458-3035|access-date=2016-05-12}} Owner-driver Geoff Bodine was against the team, but others, like Washington's former coach Joe Gibbs and owner-driver Ricky Rudd were in support of the team.{{Cite web|url=http://articles.philly.com/1997-07-19/sports/25545745_1_washington-erving-motorsports-nascar-history-nascar-races|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150920103211/http://articles.philly.com/1997-07-19/sports/25545745_1_washington-erving-motorsports-nascar-history-nascar-races|url-status=dead|archive-date=September 20, 2015|title=Erving Revving Up A Nascar Team It Will Be A Racing Rarity: Minority-owned.|website=philly-archives|accessdate=2016-05-12}} The team was only the third fully minority owned team, after Wendell Scott owned his own team and Thee Dixon owned Mansion Motorsports.{{cite web |last1=Taylor |first1=Todd |title=Dixon: NASCAR's Forgotten Man |url=https://www.greensboro.com/dixon-nascars-forgotten-man/article_4c477709-52e5-5985-9b08-342c91574f2c.html |website=Greensboro News & Record |accessdate=May 7, 2020 |date=August 8, 1997}} Before the 1998 season started, the team secured number 50 in honor of that anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier.
