There is agreement here that in an ideal world this quote would be mentioned at the target article, however since RfD only has authority over redirects that's not actionable here. On the immediate issue of whether to keep this redirect despite not being mentioned, I see no consensus. * Pppery * it has begun... 05:17, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
The word "sorry" does not ever appear at the target article, but Dave is mentioned. While an apology towards Dave may occur in the film, its existence as a redirect is questionable, as it does not seem apparent or necessary if it's just a one-liner that is never addressed at the page. - Comment "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" is not just a random one-liner, it's almost certainly the second most quoted line in the entire film (after the immediately preceding "Open the pod bay doors, HAL."). Thryduulf (talk) 21:48, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
::That's a fair point, I should have used different words to describe it (I'm more-or-less familiar with this quote as well). This redirect does differ from the others that have been nominated alongside it, in the sense that this quote is substantially shorter, and possibly more worthwhile due it being likelier to be typed and easier to maintain than some of these others. I didn't mean to imply it was random, but that's a potentially workable analogy. While it is certainly a quotable line, it's "random" in the grand scheme of all quotes; not only in relation to this film but beyond it. Among the quote redirects we do keep, it's necessary to have something for the readers that choose to type in these lines verbatim, else it's not a helpful redirect. As it's the second most quotable line, it could be easy to incorporate if that's the direction taken. Utopes (talk / cont) 08:54, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

- weak keep per Thryduulf, as some people do search by quote if they can't remember the actual title -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 07:20, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

:* can be tagged {{tl|R without mention}} -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 07:07, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
:*:That's a really unideal outcome in my opinion; that whole category consists of titles that already teeter on the verge of usefulness, and is a good spot to look for unhelpful redirects. Wikipedia isn't a search-by-quote service, and it wouldn't be very enticing if it was, with only 500 redirects currently tagged as R from quotation. Utopes (talk / cont) 08:01, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
:*:You had already tagged it before you had voted. Jay 💬 09:25, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
:*:How about "no" since that's putting the cart before the horse. {{Tl|R without mention}} puts the page into :Category:Redirects to an article without mention, which is a maintenance category: Maintenance categories are meant to be empty, meaning pages marked with maintenance category have an issue that needs to be fixed as designated by the category. This means the resolution here is to ... add a mention to the target article before this RFD is closed. Steel1943 (talk) 10:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Weak keep, part of the most notable quote relating to the film. —Kusma (talk) 12:22, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Keep -- and the quote should probably be mentioned in the article more prominently. JesseW, the juggling janitor
- Delete: not mentioned. Don't tag {{t|R without mention}}, that's not a solution, that's just kicking the can down the road. QueenofHearts 04:30, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
