Yang Xu started his football career when he made his debut for Liaoning Whowin on 16 April 2005 in a 1–0 loss against Shanghai Shenhua.{{cite web|url=http://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2005-04-17/0945544450s.shtml|title=杨旭心态正处子秀挺成功 辽足喜获未来锋线杀手|publisher=sports.sina.com.cn|date=2005-04-17|access-date=2012-09-20}} He scored his first goal for the club on 5 May 2005 in a 3–1 win against Shenzhen Jianlibao.{{cite web|url=http://sports.sohu.com/20050515/n225572299.shtml|title=辽小虎陈兴独中两元 健力宝1–3辽宁遇五连败 评|publisher=sports.sohu.com|date=2005-05-15|access-date=2012-09-20}} By the end of the 2005 season, Yang scored three league goals in 11 appearances and saw his club finish in a tenth-place position. The following season would see Yang continue to establish himself with the squad by making a further 20 league appearances and scoring three goals; however, most of his appearances came from the bench.{{cite web|url=http://csldata.sports.sohu.com/player.php?regnum=MA35120&season=2006|title=球员资料-中超数据库-搜狐|publisher=csldata.sports.sohu.com|date=2006-09-23|access-date=2012-09-20}} By the 2008 season, he was still a squad player trying to establish himself as the main striker within the team; however, he was unable to help Liaoning avoid relegation at the end of the season. Staying with the club, Yang was promoted to first-choice striker at the start of the 2009 league season and he would repay them with 15 league goals in 22 appearances, making him the second best goalscorer in the league.{{cite web|url=http://sports.sina.com.cn/b/2009-03-28/17424294051.shtml|title=中甲射手榜:南昌外援18球称王 辽足新国脚穿银靴|publisher=sports.sina.com|date=2009-10-25|access-date=2012-09-20|url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110811021803/http://sports.sina.com.cn/b/2009-03-28/17424294051.shtml |archivedate=2011-08-11}} His goals would aid Liaoning to win the division title and immediate promotion back to the top flight.
