At WWDC 2024, Apple announced that the iPhone XS, alongside the iPhone XR, would support iOS 18, making these devices the oldest iPhones compatible with the latest iOS version at the time. This decision also makes the iPhone XS as the oldest supported smartphone ever, with over seven years of updates.
Apple positioned the iPhone XS and XS Max as premium devices, targeting consumers seeking cutting-edge performance and advanced features, while simultaneously offering the iPhone XR, a lower-cost alternative, the same Apple A12 Bionic chip, but has a LCD IPS panel display, and with a singular camera. {{iPhone models}}Along with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone XS and XS Max were discontinued on September 10, 2019, following the announcement of the 13th generation of iPhone; the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The iPhone XS received generally positive reviews from critics after release. iPhone XS and XS Max users initially had issues with LTE, Wi-Fi reception and Bluetooth connections. Some experts claimed that a faulty antenna was to blame,{{Cite web|url=https://www.wiwavelength.com/2018/09/iphone-xs-and-xs-max-mostly-fail-to.html|title=[UPDATED] iPhone XS and XS Max mostly fail to impress in lab-tested RF power output|last=Andrew J Shepherd|language=en|access-date=January 28, 2019|archive-date=January 28, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190128135605/https://www.wiwavelength.com/2018/09/iphone-xs-and-xs-max-mostly-fail-to.html|url-status=live}} and in response to many consumer complaints about iPhone XS/XS Max connectivity problems, Apple contacted users for help with their investigation.{{Cite web|url=https://www.macrumors.com/2018/10/03/iphone-xs-lte-connectivity-apple-investigation/|title=Apple Looking Into LTE Connectivity Issues Affecting Some iPhone XS and XS Max Owners|last=Clover|first=Juli|website=www.macrumors.com|date=October 3, 2018 |language=en|access-date=January 28, 2019|archive-date=January 28, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190128140012/https://www.macrumors.com/2018/10/03/iphone-xs-lte-connectivity-apple-investigation/|url-status=live}} To resolve some problems with the XS/XS Max, Apple pushed the iOS 12.0.1 update on October 8, 2018, which, along with addressing the Chargegate issue, fixed a connectivity issue where Bluetooth could become temporarily unavailable on the XS/XS Max.{{Cite web|url=https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209084|title=About iOS 12 Updates|website=Apple Support|language=en|access-date=January 28, 2019|archive-date=May 15, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200515012426/https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209084|url-status=live}}

Users reported that the iPhone XS and XS Max would sometimes fail to charge by Lightning cable if it had been off for a while, and would only begin to charge if the screen was turned on.{{cite news|author=|title=Apple silent amid iPhone 'chargegate' complaints|url=https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-45707211|work=BBC|date=October 1, 2018|access-date=October 5, 2018|archive-date=April 12, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190412170114/https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-45707211|url-status=live}} This was caused by a software bug with Apple's "Disable USB accessories when locked" setting, a feature intended to prevent unknown devices from accessing a user's content. This technology combines multiple photos of varying exposures to increase dynamic range on the iPhones' photos, but can also reduce facial imperfections and highlights in selfies. Some, who speculated this was the result of a hidden "beauty mode" (an actual feature in some smartphones), dubbed the issue "Beautygate". There was a general dispute in the community as to whether the camera actual "intended" to "perfect" faces or if they just appeared that way as result of a better-quality camera.{{Cite news|url=https://www.cnet.com/news/iphone-xs-beauty-gate-heres-why-selfies-look-different/|title=iPhone XS beauty-gate|work=cnet|access-date=November 29, 2018|archive-date=November 29, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181129143543/https://www.cnet.com/news/iphone-xs-beauty-gate-heres-why-selfies-look-different/|url-status=live}}
Apple said that these results were due to the Smart HDR algorithm incorrectly selecting the blurrier long exposure as its base frame instead of the sharpest short exposure. The issue was resolved with the release of iOS 12.1 on October 30, 2018.{{Cite news|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2018/10/23/apple-iphone-xs-max-xr-camera-problem-beautygate-charging-ios-12-update-fix-release/#34d11091558c|title=Apple Quietly Admits To iPhone Selfie Issue|last=Kelly|first=Gordon|date=October 23, 2018|work=Forbes|access-date=November 18, 2018|archive-date=November 18, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181118124615/https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2018/10/23/apple-iphone-xs-max-xr-camera-problem-beautygate-charging-ios-12-update-fix-release/#34d11091558c|url-status=live}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/23/18011306/apple-iphone-xr-review-camera-screen-battery-price|title=Apple iPhone XR review: better than good enough|last=Patel|first=Nilay|date=October 23, 2018|work=The Verge|access-date=November 18, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181115043120/https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/23/18011306/apple-iphone-xr-review-camera-screen-battery-price|archive-date=November 15, 2018|url-status=live|quote=Apple told me that the forthcoming iOS 12.1 update, currently in public beta, will address the issue of the front camera appearing to smooth out skin by picking a sharper base frame for Smart HDR, but I wasn't able to test it yet.}}
