Official Selection

The official selection was announced on 19 April at Grand Hôtel in Paris. Among comments after the announcement, journalists noted the unusually high number of Hollywood films in the line-up, the absence of any female director in the main competition, as well as the absence of competing first-time feature film directors.{{Cite web |last=Bradshaw |first=Peter|author-link=Peter Bradshaw |date=19 April 2012 |url=https://www.theguardian.com/film/filmblog/2012/apr/19/cannes-film-festival-2012-lineup |title=Cannes film festival 2012 lineup: the competition's still a man's world |work=guardian.co.uk |publisher=The Guardian|access-date=20 April 2012}}{{Cite web |last=Leffler |first=Rebecca |date=19 April 2012 |url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cannes-film-festival-thierry-fremaux-qa-314227 |title=Cannes 2012: Thierry Fremaux on Increased Star Power and the Festival's Mission (Q&A) |work=The Hollywood Reporter |access-date=20 April 2012}} The festival's artistic leader Thierry Frémaux responded that people should not focus only on the competition films: "The selection is an ensemble; you have to consider the whole package."

=Critics' Week=

The line-up for the Critics' Week was announced on 23 April at the section's website. The following films were selected.{{Cite web|url=http://archives.semainedelacritique.com/films/2012/2012_selection.php |title=51e selection de la Semaine de la Critique - 2012 |work=semainedelacritique.com |access-date=10 August 2017}}
