The first government of Pedro Sánchez was formed on 7 June 2018, following the latter's election as Prime Minister of Spain by the Congress of Deputies on 1 June and his swearing-in on 2 June, as a result of the success of a motion of no confidence against Mariano Rajoy.{{cite news|last=Alberola|first=Miquel|date=1 June 2018|url=https://elpais.com/politica/2018/06/01/actualidad/1527837969_067262.html|title=Pedro Sánchez, presidente del Gobierno tras ganar la moción de censura a Rajoy|language=es|newspaper=El País|location=Madrid|access-date=18 January 2020}} It succeeded the second Rajoy government and was the Government of Spain from 7 June 2018 to 13 January 2020, a total of {{age in days|7 Jun 2018|13 Jan 2020}} days, or {{age in years, months and days|2018|6|7|2020|1|13}}.

Cabinet changes

Sánchez's first government saw a number of cabinet changes during its tenure:

  • On 13 June 2018, Màxim Huerta stepped down as Minister of Culture and Sports after it was revealed that he had been sanctioned for using a shell corporation as a means for tax avoidance between 2006 and 2008.{{cite news|date=13 June 2018|url=https://www.eldiario.es/politica/Maxim-Huerta-defraudo-Hacienda-sociedad_0_781821883.html|title=Màxim Huerta defraudó a Hacienda 218.322 euros a través de una sociedad limitada entre 2006 y 2008|language=es|newspaper=eldiario.es|access-date=13 June 2018}}{{cite news|last1=Cortizo|first1=Gonzalo|last2=Zas Marcos|first2=Mónica|date=13 June 2018|url=https://www.eldiario.es/politica/Pedro-Sanchez-Maxim-Huerta-nombrado_0_781822084.html|title=Màxim Huerta presenta a Pedro Sánchez su dimisión tras la polémica de su fraude a Hacienda|language=es|newspaper=eldiario.es|access-date=13 June 2018}} He was succeeded by José Guirao.{{cite news|last=Castro|first=Irene|date=13 June 2018|url=https://www.eldiario.es/cultura/Jose-Guirao-Cultura-Deportes-Huerta_0_781822909.html|title=José Guirao, nuevo ministro de Cultura y Deportes tras la caída de Huerta|language=es|newspaper=eldiario.es|access-date=13 June 2018}}
  • On 11 September 2018, Carmen Montón announced her resignation as Minister of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare after evidence was uncovered that she had obtained a master's degree from the King Juan Carlos University without attending most classes, amid other irregularities.{{cite news|last1=Ejerique|first1=Raquel|last2=Galaup|first2=Laura|date=10 September 2018|url=https://www.eldiario.es/sociedad/inverosimiles-explicaciones-ministra-master_0_812619061.html|title=Las inverosímiles explicaciones de la ministra sobre su máster|language=es|newspaper=eldiario.es|access-date=12 September 2018}}{{cite news|last=Ruiz Sierra|first=Juan|date=11 September 2018|url=https://www.elperiodico.com/es/politica/20180911/carmen-monton-dimite-7029523|title=Montón dimite por su máster irregular para no dañar a Sánchez|language=es|newspaper=El Periódico de Catalunya|access-date=12 September 2018}} She was succeeded by María Luisa Carcedo.{{cite news|last1=Castro|first1=Irene|last2=Cortizo|first2=Gonzalo|date=11 September 2018|url=https://www.eldiario.es/sociedad/Maria-Luisa-Carcedo-ministra-Sanidad_0_813319805.html|title=María Luisa Carcedo, nueva ministra de Sanidad, Consumo y Bienestar Social|language=es|newspaper=eldiario.es|access-date=12 September 2018}}

From 29 April 2019, Sánchez's cabinet took on acting duties for the duration of the government formation process resulting from the April 2019 general election. This lasted for an estimated {{age in days|29 Apr 2019|13 Jan 2020}} days and saw a new general election being held in the meantime. A number of ministers renounced their posts throughout this period, with the ordinary duties of their ministries being transferred to other cabinet members as a result of Sánchez being unable to appoint replacements while in acting role.

Council of Ministers

The Council of Ministers was structured into the offices for the prime minister, the deputy prime minister, 17 ministries and the post of the spokesperson of the Government.{{cite web|website=lamoncloa.gob.es|language=es|title=Gobiernos por legislaturas.
