Genshin Impact{{hsp}}{{efn|{{Lang-zh|c=原神|p=Yuánshén|l=Original God, Origins of god, Primordial God}}}} is a 2020 action role-playing game produced by MiHoYo/HoYoverse.{{Efn|Developed and published by miHoYo, with publishing outside mainland China under Cognosphere, d/b/a HoYoverse.}} The game features an anime-style open world environment and an action-based battle system using elemental magic and character-switching. A free-to-play game monetized through gacha game mechanics, Genshin Impact is updated regularly using the games as a service model; it was originally released for Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, and Windows, followed by PlayStation 5 in 2021, with an Xbox Series X/S version in November 2024.
Genshin Impact takes place in the fantasy world of Teyvat, home to seven nations, each of which is tied to a different element and ruled by a different god (archon). The story follows the Traveler, an interstellar adventurer who, at the start of the game, is separated from their twin sibling after the two land in Teyvat. Thereafter, the Traveler journeys across the nations of Teyvat in search of the lost sibling, accompanied by their guide, Paimon. Along the way, the two befriend myriad individuals, become involved in the affairs of its nations, and begin to unravel the mysteries of the land.
Its development began in 2017 and takes inspiration from a variety of sources, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, anime, Gnosticism, and an array of cultures and world mythologies. Genshin Impact has received generally positive reviews, with critics writing approving of its combat mechanics and its immersive open world. Conversely, some criticism has been directed at its simplistic endgame and its gacha-based monetization model. The game has also been subjected to controversy over censorship of content related to Chinese politics, allegations of colorism in character design, and privacy and security concerns. Across all platforms, the game is estimated to have grossed nearly {{US$|3.8 billion|long=no}} by the end of 2022, representing the highest ever first-year launch revenue for any video game.{{Cite news |last=Astle |first=Aaron |date=September 23, 2022 |title=Genshin Impact surpasses $3.6 billion revenue ahead of second anniversary |work=PocketGamer |url=https://www.pocketgamer.biz/news/79705/genshin-impact-surpasses-36-billion-revenue-ahead-of-second-anniversary/ |access-date=July 29, 2023 |archive-date=September 27, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220927025227/https://www.pocketgamer.biz/news/79705/genshin-impact-surpasses-36-billion-revenue-ahead-of-second-anniversary/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |date=8 June 2023 |title=凝心聚力开新局 奋勇争先创佳绩 |language=zh |pages=10 |work=Guangming Daily |url=https://news.gmw.cn/2023-06/08/content_36616884.htm |access-date=9 September 2023}}

The player can control their character and perform actions such as running, climbing, swimming, and gliding, all limited by stamina. The Traveler and Paimon arrive in Mondstadt, only to find it being terrorized by a dragon called Stormterror. They work together with the Knights of Favonius to resolve the problem. They meet a carefree bard named Venti and learn that Stormterror – whose real name is Dvalin – is Venti's friend and has been corrupted by the Abyss Order. Venti reveals himself to be Barbatos, the Anemo Archon, and purifies Dvalin with help from the Traveler. After solving the crisis, Venti and the Traveler are ambushed by La Signora, the Eighth Fatui Harbinger, who steals Venti's Gnosis. After recovering, Venti suggests the Traveler to attend the Rite of Descension in Liyue as they will have to wait a whole year should they miss.

Amidst the concerns of Primordial Seawater flooding, Furina is revealed to be a cursed human instead of an Archon, split from Focalors' divinity as she worked to overturn the prophecy: a punishment for Egeria, the previous Hydro Archon, who had created humans using the power of Primordial Seawater without Celestia's permission. Having accumulated enough Indemnitium (power), Focalors sacrifices herself, destroying the Hydro Archon's divine throne and thus restoring power to Neuvillette, the Hydro Dragon, who saves the Fontainians from the prophecy by turning them into true humans, preventing them from being dissolved. After the flood recedes, the Traveler meets Neuvillette who reveals that the Hydro Gnosis was made of the remains of the third Descender and suggests the Traveler to head to Natlan.
The Traveler returns to Sumeru to take a commission to find a missing person and meets Dainsleif again who reveals that the mysterious "Sinner" is "The Visionary" Vedrfolnir, Dainsleif's brother, who is one of the Five Sinners of Khaenri'ah. He also reveals that the Five Sinners became allured by the power of the Abyss and shared a world-shattering power among themselves. When the cataclysm came, none of them came to defend Khaenri'ah. After investigating the missing person, the Traveler finds Caribert, son of Clothar Alberich, who reveals that the Abyss Order's masterplan, the Loom of Fate, has entered operation. After the Sumeru crisis was solved, during their journey across the Teyvat, Paimon suggests to the Traveler that they go visit Lesser Lord Kusanali as they have many questions left unanswered, such as the "Descenders". As they make their way to the Sanctuary of Surasthana, they find two Inazumans arguing over the Tatarasuna mystery which gets their attention. They explain the mystery and Kaedehara Clan's downfall and reveals a kabukimono was not a human but a puppet which the Traveler deduces it to be Scaramouche. As they are debating, Scaramouche is spotted walking by and, worrying that he might have escaped, the Traveler go to the sanctuary to warn Kusanali. She reveals that she made a deal with Scaramouche to investigate Irminsul on her behalf and that following his defeat, he had been discarded by Dottore. She also proposes for them to join force the investigation. After a brief argument, the Traveler and Scaramouche reluctantly agree her proposal.
Inside Irminsul, they discover the situation of Tatarasuna mystery – Escher, disguised by the Dottore, sabotaged Tatarasuna furnace to corrupt Scaramouche with malevolent spirits. In the process, Niwa was stabbed to death. After calming down, Scaramouche reveals Traveler's sibling's activities in Khaenri'ah after arriving in the nation. He then shuts Kusanali off and privately tells the Traveler that Niwa and his other friends deserved a second chance for a better fate. Afterwards, he heads into the Irminsul heart to erase himself from time. By time Kusanali reconnects, Scaramouche is gone, having erased from time.
The next day, when the Traveler mentions Scaramouche, Paimon does not remember him, leaving the Traveler alarmed and they head to Inazuma to see if anything had changed. In Inazuma, the Traveler learns that while the incident was still occurred, the history regarding the Tatarasuna mystery is altered. They informs Kusanali who also does not remember Scaramouche. Left with no other choice, they tells her and Paimon about him. Nahida reveals that Scaramouche's erasement revises Irminsul however, as a "Descender", the Traveler is not affected by any revisions. The Traveler recalls that Rukkhadevata told them that one could not completely erase themselves, realising that Scaramouche is still alive. They found that Scaramouche (now Wanderer) is in front of them and follow him.
After returning to the merchant, Kusanali catches up to them and shows Scaramouche his past, which he eventually accepts. As the sudden surge of painful memories flows through him, the Shouki no Kami emerges to attack, but Scaramouche manages to compose himself and eliminates the false god with his newly acquired Anemo Vision. With the recovery a success, they leave the dream to discuss about the Sibling's travels and Scaramouche's future.
Scaramouche questions the Traveler why they went to Inazuma. After hearing their explanation, he decides to consider it a favor to be owed and agrees to help them wherever he could. In return, the Traveler, at his request, picks out a suitable name for him.
After giving him a new name, he decides to get revenge on Dottore for his manipulation. However, Kusanali urges moderation as he needs time to compose himself. Returning back to the inn from earlier, a strange voice reveals the Traveler that the fate of Teyvat could not be easily changed and that they should believe their own eyes before fading away, leaving the Traveler wondering what awaits them in the future.

Mondstadt
| ShortSummary =
The Traveler and Paimon return to Mondstadt to celebrate Windblume Festival and pay a visit to Katheryne, who tells them that something was unusual around them. They notice Beatrice rejecting Quinn's offers to spend time with her, Miles approaching the two and telling them that he had been sleepwalking recently and even found himself outside at times – checkups had not diagnosed him with any ailments – and Donna's remark about finding the ideal man, which Paimon finds unusual as she had always been infatuated with Diluc. Kaeya who passes by tells the Traveler and Paimon that Jean had been looking for them when they returned, stating that the matter at hand needed to be discussed at the Knights of Favonius Headquarters.
Inside, Jean tells them and the other captains that with recent events, she had called all the captains to hold a trial. The Traveler then notices that Albedo hadn't been among the captains, in which Jean confirms that Albedo is the one going on trial. Jean and the captains went to oversee the trial with Jean being the judge. During the trial, the prosecutor, Hertha, accuses Albedo of murder and illegal disposal of human remains in which Albedo testifies that he was in his office that night, doing a research about Dragonspine, and insists that he had no motive to kill anyone. The prosecutor then reveals a correspondence letter that detailed his activities. With enough proof leaning towards his implication, Albedo is found guilty and taken away but is reassured that he could submit an appeal.
Inside Jean's office, some captains voice their discontent with the outcome, believing that Albedo was innocent. Jean privately agrees with them, but insists that the verdict must be upheld. After investigating independently on Jean's order, the Traveler finds the third location in Dragonspine where unlike the first two locations, there is no body inside that hole. Returning to the Knights of Favonius, they inform Jean of the development. She tells them that the remains were being investigated and informed them that the second trial will take place in two days.
During the second trial, the evidences are piling against Albedo who insists that he had not killed anyone and was exercising restraint. After the Traveler testifies that the third location was different compared to the other two, Albedo reveals that a while ago, someone had tried to eliminate him in secret, but he killed and buried them there instead, which is supported by Eula since she and her friends had also been there that day, and he killed a "person."
Just then, another Hertha arrives in the court. The prosecuting Hertha accuses Albedo of trying to undermine her, while Albedo reveals that he had been stationed in Dragonspine to monitor Durin, the dragon that Dvalin and Barbatos slew during the Cataclysm. Hertha, who just arrived, exposes the imposter by showing her arm, causing the latter to flee.
Outside the church, Durin's minions launches a full-scale invasion on Mondstadt City but eventually are defeated. Afterwards, Albedo requests a meeting between Knights/Church of Favonius, the Anemo Archon and the Hexenzirkel which Alice, founder of Hexenzirkel, approves. Heading up to Albedo's office, Mini Durin reveals that as part of Albedo's plan, he would take over the deceased Durin to be revived as a human with a approval from the Wanderer.
Inside the Imaginarium Theater, Albedo intends to kill and then resurrect him in a different form by using Mini Durin as Durin would pose a threat to all of Teyvat should he revived at full force. Alice accepts the request, but tells them they must pass a trial involving the chessboard which they pass. Using materials acquired from the Hexenzirkel, Albedo drained Durin's core of its energy and proceeded to conduct a ritual to replace Durin with Mini Durin, which was a success.

- Natlan is most likely named after the legendary homeland of the Aztecs, Aztlán, and seems inspired by several indigenous cultures, primarily those of Pre-Columbian Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Oceania, though more modern Latin American influences like breakdancing, Southeast Asia culture, and African-American culture are also present. Geographically, the terrain of Natlan is modeled after landscapes such as horst and grabens and mesas, taken from various African and South American canyons and landscapes such as the Chapada Diamantina, and the Blyde River Canyon. Unlike the other nations which have a central ruler, Natlan has six tribes ruled by respective chiefs under federation rule, with the Pyro Archon serving as a unifying figure. The names of all six tribes are derived from the Aztec Thirteen Heavens.
- Nanatzcayan is likely derived from Ilhuicatl-Nanatzcayan. In the name of the Aztec heaven (also known as Ilhuicatl-Itzapan-Nanatzcayan; "The sky where obsidian stones clash in water"), the "clashing" alludes to the noise preceding hailstorms. The tribe name means "the place where it crashes" in Nahuatl. Many members of the tribe have Mayan names, mainly deriving from the names of deities and historical figures, while some other members have Nahuatl names.
- Meztli is possibly named after Meztli, a god or goddess of the moon, who ruled Ilhuicatl-Meztli. Many members of the tribe have Polynesian names and the tribe may also take inspiration from Hawaii Islands due to the hot springs and its location near the water.
- Huitztlan is likely associated with Quetzalcoatl, who was related to wind. Many members of the tribe have Quechuan names and the tribe may also take inspiration from Incan Empire or even Machu Picchu due to high ground from the surface.
- Tlalocan is named after the god of rain and thunder, Tlaloc. The name Flower-Feather Clan could also allude to the Aztec goddess Xochiquetzal (Nahuatl: Xochitl "Flower"; Quetzalli "Quetzal Feather") meaning "flower precious feather."
- Mictlan is named after the Aztec underworld. The name Masters of the Night-Wind could allude to Yohualli Ehécatl, meaning "night wind," one of the epithets given to Tezcatlipoca, who is associated with the night sky, obsidian, hurricanes, and divination.
- Teteocan likely gets its name from Ilhuicatl-Teteocan, which is ruled by the Creator-Brothers gods, the four Tezcatlipocas. Ilhuicatl-Teteocan (Nahuatl: Ilhuicatl "heaven"; teteo "gods"; can "place") means "the heaven that is the place of the gods", a nod to where Xbalanque, the yet-frst Pyro Archon, fought against Xiuhcoatl, the Pyro Sovereign.
- Kingdom of the Lord of the Night, also known as Night Kingdom, is a realm, located deep under the region of Natlan, where the souls of dead reside and can be brought back to live should their team wins the battle against Abyss and which is ruled by Yohualtecuhtin, the Lord of the Night. The Kingdom may have reference to Xibalba where the souls of the dead reside, ruled by the Maya death gods.
- Snezhnaya takes inspiration from both Soviet-era and Imperial Russia. The name is Russian for "snowy" ({{lang|ru|Снежная}}).
- Nod-Krai is a region in Southern Snezhnaya where the Voynich Guild governs instead of the Fatui. Nod-Krai could possibly be taken from the Land of Nod (Hebrew: אֶרֶץ־נוֹד – ʾereṣ-Nōḏ) a place mentioned in the Book of Genesis where Cain was exiled by God after Cain had murdered his brother Abel. Krai is a type of federal subject of Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Latvia, with the word meaning "edge" or "region" in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian and Bulgarian.
- Khaenri'ah is mainly based on Germanic and Nordic mythology, such as the Nibelungenlied. The name may be derived from an Arabic phrase meaning "betrayer of winds" ({{lang|ar|خائن رياح}}).
The game's primary mythological basis is Gnosticism, particularly the way it understands relationships between humans and their world, and how gods may influence this relationship.{{Cite news |date=April 9, 2021 |title=Genshin Impact Special Feature – Developer Q&A |language=Chinese, Japanese |edition=May 2021 |pages=100–106 |work=PASH! |url=https://www.bilibili.com/read/cv10739818 |access-date=April 29, 2023}} The name given to Teyvat's gods, "Archon", is inspired by the related deities from the Gnostic tradition. Although each Archon has a personal name for their "vessel", or human form, and is referred to with a specific title by the citizens of their nation, most gods in the game's story – even those who are not Archons – take the names of demons from the Ars Goetia, the first volume of The Lesser Key of Solomon.{{Cite web |last=Dewan |first=Kevin |date=August 17, 2022 |title=Genshin Impact: Paimon's Name Could Be Teasing a Devilish Plot Twist |url=https://www.cbr.com/genshin-impact-theory-paimon-demon/ |access-date=May 21, 2023 |website=Comic Book Resources |archive-date=May 21, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230521214211/https://www.cbr.com/genshin-impact-theory-paimon-demon/ |url-status=live }}

Genshin Impact receives "generally favorable reviews" according to review aggregator Metacritic. The open world of Teyvat drew praise; IGN{{'s}} Travis Northup described Teyvat as "a world that is absolutely bursting at the seams with possibilities", and Hardcore Gamer{{'s}} Jordan Helm described it as "one big environmental puzzle". Liyue in particular was picked out by Kotaku{{'s}} Sisi Jiang for being "one of the most exciting regions that I've visited in a video game in years", before continuing on to discuss how the region "shows an idealized portrayal of Chinese social relations that exists in localized pockets".{{cite web |last=Jiang |first=Sisi |title=A Farewell to Liyue, An Exceptional Part Of Genshin Impact |url=https://kotaku.com/a-farewell-to-liyue-an-exceptional-part-of-genshin-imp-1846093827 |website=Kotaku |date=January 20, 2021 |access-date=January 22, 2021 |archive-date=January 21, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210121194655/https://kotaku.com/a-farewell-to-liyue-an-exceptional-part-of-genshin-imp-1846093827 |url-status=live }} Game Informer characterized the game as an incredible experience, noting that "[t]he gameplay loop of collection, upgrading, and customization is captivating and compelling". The execution of gameplay impressed Pocket Gamer, and Destructoid{{'s}} Chris Carter called the combat system "one of the most interesting things" about the game. NPR remarked that the game had an abundance of content despite being free to play.{{cite news |last=Kline |first=Kaity |title='Genshin Impact' Is Free-To-Play Fun—If You Can Resist Opening Your Wallet |url=https://www.npr.org/2020/11/26/938942548/genshin-impact-is-free-to-play-fun-if-you-can-resist-opening-your-wallet |publisher=NPR |date=November 26, 2020 |access-date=December 1, 2020 |archive-date=December 2, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201202020250/https://www.npr.org/2020/11/26/938942548/genshin-impact-is-free-to-play-fun-if-you-can-resist-opening-your-wallet |url-status=live }} Gene Park of The Washington Post lauded the game as revolutionary for the genre, having players "imagine a mobile gaming world with titles with quality that matches the industry's top-tier experiences".{{cite news |last=Park |first=Gene |title='Genshin Impact' tries an interesting live service trick: Make a good game at launch |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2020/09/30/genshin-impact-impressions/ |newspaper=The Washington Post |date=September 30, 2020 |access-date=October 7, 2020 |archive-date=October 6, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201006095510/https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2020/09/30/genshin-impact-impressions/ |url-status=live }} Polygon also praised the game for differentiating itself from its peers, heralding its arrival as mobile games become more mainstream and appealing to "an audience outside the typical mobile gaming demographic" and "new players without the hardware to play more conventional and resource-hogging RPGs".
Conversely, Genshin Impact has been criticized for its endgame content, its gacha monetization system, and its self-limitations. Ari Nortis of Kotaku, for instance, wrote that although the game provides a solid experience it also has "some of the typical bullshit that comes along with a zero-dollar price tag" and that the gacha system can lead to a "cycle that belongs more in Reno, Nevada, than a magical fantasy land of gods and wizards".{{cite web |last=Notis |first=Ari |title=Genshin Impact Is More Than A Breath Of The Wild Clone |url=https://kotaku.com/genshin-impact-is-more-than-a-breath-of-the-wild-clone-1845232653 |website=Kotaku |date=September 30, 2020 |access-date=December 3, 2020 |archive-date=December 5, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201205234502/https://kotaku.com/genshin-impact-is-more-than-a-breath-of-the-wild-clone-1845232653 |url-status=live }} GameSpot echoed this criticism, noting that the game is "hampered a bit by the restrictions its free-to-play model imposes". Controversies
= Security concerns =
The game has been criticized for initially lacking security features ubiquitous on other sites, like two-factor authentication. On October 19, 2020, a vulnerable security flaw was discovered that exposed the phone number linked to a player's account during the password recovery attempt on the miHoYo website. = FTC settlement =
In January 2025, HoYoverse issued a $20 million settlement to the Federal Trade Commission for selling loot boxes to children and collecting their personal data without parental consent. The complaint alleges that HoYoverse “deceived children and other users about the real costs of in-game transactions and odds of obtaining rare prizes" and that it collected the personal information of children in violation of the COPPA act. The settlement also prohibits HoYoverse from selling loot boxes to children, requires the company to disclose the loot box odds, and requires them to delete the personal information of all users under 13.{{Cite web |last=Davis |first=Wes |date=2025-01-18 |title=Genshin Impact's developer to pay $20 million fine to settle FTC charges |url=https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/18/24346862/genshin-impact-developer-20-million-fine-ftc-data-lootboxes |access-date=2025-01-20 |website=The Verge |language=en |archive-date=January 20, 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250120014205/https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/18/24346862/genshin-impact-developer-20-million-fine-ftc-data-lootboxes |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2025-01-17 |title=Genshin Impact Game Developer Will be Banned from Selling Lootboxes to Teens Under 16 without Parental Consent, Pay a $20 Million Fine to Settle FTC Charges |url=https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/01/genshin-impact-game-developer-will-be-banned-selling-lootboxes-teens-under-16-without-parental |access-date=2025-01-26 |website=Federal Trade Commission |language=en |archive-date=January 26, 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250126043736/https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/01/genshin-impact-game-developer-will-be-banned-selling-lootboxes-teens-under-16-without-parental |url-status=live }}
