{{2021 United States Capitol attack}}
The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States took place on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, on the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was the 59th inauguration and marked the commencement of Joe Biden's term as president and Kamala Harris' term as vice president. Biden took the presidential oath of office, before which Harris took the vice presidential oath of office.
The inauguration took place amidst extraordinary political, public health, economic, and national security crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic; outgoing President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election, which provoked an attack on the United States Capitol on January 6; Trump's second impeachment; and a threat of widespread civil unrest, which stimulated a nationwide law enforcement response. Festivities were sharply curtailed by efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate the potential for violence near the Capitol.{{Cite news |author1=Mascaro |first=Lisa |author2=Jalonick |first2=Mary Clare |date=January 14, 2021 |title=Trump impeachment trial to focus on his attacks on election |url=https://apnews.com/article/trump-impeached-after-capitol-riot-cd210a7c362966f6c93bdf1a1cf1b190 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210116230315/https://apnews.com/article/trump-impeached-after-capitol-riot-cd210a7c362966f6c93bdf1a1cf1b190 |archive-date=January 16, 2021 |access-date=January 17, 2021 |work=AP News}}{{Cite news |author=Sonmez |first=Felicia |author-link=Felicia Sonmez |author2=Itkowitz |first2=Colby |author3=Wagner |first3=John |author4=Firozi |first4=Paulina |author5=Miroff |first5=Nick |date=January 11, 2021 |title=Acting homeland security secretary Wolf to step down, nine days ahead of Biden inauguration |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/11/trump-impeachment-biden-transition-live-updates/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210118214439/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/11/trump-impeachment-biden-transition-live-updates/ |archive-date=January 18, 2021 |access-date=January 17, 2021 |newspaper=The Washington Post}} The live audience was limited; members of the Congress attended with one guest of their choosing, resembling a State of the Union address.{{Cite web|date=December 16, 2020|title=JCCIC Announces Attendance Guidelines for 59th Inaugural Ceremonies|url=https://www.inaugural.senate.gov/press_release/jccic-announces-attendance-guidelines-for-59th-inaugural-ceremonies/|url-status=live|publisher=Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies|access-date=December 16, 2020|archive-date=December 19, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201219082030/https://www.inaugural.senate.gov/press_release/jccic-announces-attendance-guidelines-for-59th-inaugural-ceremonies/}} Public health measures such as mandatory face coverings, testing, temperature checks, and social distancing were used to protect participants in the ceremony.{{Cite news|last1=Shear|first1=Michael D.|last2=Fandos|first2=Nicholas|date=November 30, 2020|title=Biden's Inauguration: Expect Smaller Crowds and More Social Distancing|newspaper=The New York Times|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/30/us/politics/biden-inauguration.html|url-status=live|access-date=January 13, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210114194202/https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/30/us/politics/biden-inauguration.html|archive-date=January 14, 2021}}

Theme and programming
The Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies chose the inaugural theme "Our Determined Democracy: Forging a More Perfect Union" to highlight the inaugural ceremony as a "hallmark of American governance and democracy" and stress the peaceful transition of power.
Allen, Biden Inaugural Committee CEO, said the events would "look different amid the pandemic" but maintain inaugural traditions while engaging Americans in a safe manner.
