Red Bull Flugtag

{{about|the competitive event|the airshow disaster|Flugtag '88}}
File:RBF Wien Fliegende Puch Maxi.jpg, Austria Flying Puch Maxi, Die Flügelmütter]]Red Bull Flugtag ({{IPA|de|ˈfluːkˌtaːk}}, 'airshow' {{literal translation|flight day}}) is an event organized by Red Bull in which competitors attempt to fly home-made, human-powered flying machines, size-limited to around {{convert|10|m|ft}} and weight-limited to approximately {{convert|150|kg|lb}}. The flying machines are usually launched off a pier about {{convert|9|m|ft}} high into the sea or body of water. Most competitors enter for the entertainment value, and the flying machines rarely fly at all.
Background
The format was originally invented in Selsey, a small seaside town in the south of England under the name "Birdman Rally" in 1971.[http://www.birdman.org.uk/site/history.html First known Flugtag format event]{{dead link|date=April 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} The first Red Bull Flugtag competition was held in 1992 in Vienna, Austria. It was such a success that it has been held every year since and in over 35 cities all over the world.{{cite web |last1=Back |first1=Adrian |title=The day a daring amateur aviator swooped into the history books |url=https://www.redbull.com/au-en/chicken-whisperers-red-bull-flugtag-inspired-by |website=www.redbull.com |publisher=Red Bull |access-date=20 February 2021 |language=en |date=22 June 2020 |quote=... the inaugural edition was held in Vienna in 1992, ... }}
Anyone is eligible to compete in the Flugtag event. To participate, each team must submit an application and their contraption must meet the criteria set forth by Red Bull. The criteria vary with location. In the United States each flying machine must have a maximum wingspan of {{convert|30|ft|m}} and a maximum weight (including pilot) of {{convert|450|lb|kg}}. In Australian Flugtags the wingspan is limited to {{convert|8|m|ft}} and the weight (not including pilot) to {{convert|180|kg|lb}}.{{Cite web |url=http://www.redbull.com.au/cs/userfiles/file/RedBullFlugtag_TC_updated_6.pdf |title=Archived copy |access-date=July 28, 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110706111503/http://www.redbull.com.au/cs/userfiles/file/RedBullFlugtag_TC_updated_6.pdf |archive-date=2011-07-06 |url-status=dead }} The craft must be powered by muscle, gravity, and imagination. Because the aircraft will ultimately end up in the water, it must be unsinkable and constructed entirely of environmentally friendly materials. The aircraft may not have any loose parts and advertising space is limited to {{convert|1|sqft|cm2|adj=on}}.{{Cite web |url=https://www.redbull.com/us-en |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170308021317/https://www.redbull.com/us-en/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=March 8, 2017 |title=Red Bull Gives You Wings |website=Red Bull}} File:Motus, LLC team at Red Bull Flugtag 2016.png at the Flugtag 2016 in Boston, Massachusetts]]

- The Portland, Oregon, competition, held on August 1, 2015, at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, wherein craft were launched into the Willamette River, was ended early by the United States Coast Guard after an excessive number of spectator boats (over 500) filled the river, making it impassable to commercial traffic. One collision was reported between a spectator boat and a commercial vessel, though damage was minimal and no injuries occurred.{{Cite web |url=https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2015/08/beautiful_day_for_a_flugtag_at.html |title=Coast Guard shuts down Flugtag after Willamette River traffic jam (video, photos) |date=August 2, 2015 |website=oregonlive |access-date=February 20, 2021}}
