History

DIGITALEUROPE was formed in 1999 as the European Information and Communications Technology Industry Association (EICTA) by consolidating two former European organisations, ECTEL and EUROBIT, which represented the information and telecommunications industries.{{cite news |title=EICTA rebrands itself as 'DIGITALEUROPE' |publisher=European Broadcasting Union |url=https://tech.ebu.ch/Jahia/site/tech/cache/offonce/news/eicta-rebrands-itself-as-digitaleurope-12mar09 |date=March 12, 2009 |access-date=September 6, 2014 |archive-date=September 7, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140907052211/https://tech.ebu.ch/Jahia/site/tech/cache/offonce/news/eicta-rebrands-itself-as-digitaleurope-12mar09 |url-status=dead }} EICTA expanded its scope to include the consumer electronics industry; on October 1, 2001, the association merged with the European Association of Consumer Electronics Manufacturers (EACEM). The new joint association changed its name to the European Information, Communications and Consumer Electronics Technology Industry Association (but kept its original acronym, EICTA).{{cite news |title=DIGITALEUROPE |publisher=Digital Video Broadcasting |url=https://www.dvb.org/members/digitaleurope |access-date=September 6, 2014}}

On March 12, 2009, EICTA rebranded as DIGITALEUROPE.{{cite news |title=DigitalEurope Statutes |publisher=DigitalEurope |url=http://www.digitaleurope.org/Portals/0/Documents/DIGITALEUROPE_Statutes_English.pdf |access-date=September 6, 2014 |archive-date=September 7, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140907052016/http://www.digitaleurope.org/Portals/0/Documents/DIGITALEUROPE_Statutes_English.pdf |url-status=dead }} Overtime, its membership has expanded to include vertical industries such as healthcare, finance and manufacturing.

Logos

DIGITALEUROPE previously developed the industry standards related to high-definition televisions.

On September 5, 2014, DIGITALEUROPE released an Ultra HD TV logo to certify companies that meet their technical requirements.{{cite news |title=DIGITALEUROPE launches Ultra High Definition logo for new generation of screens on 5 September at IFA |publisher=DigitalEurope |url=http://www.digitaleurope.org/Services/Highdefinitionlogos/UHD.aspx |date=September 5, 2014 |access-date=September 6, 2014 |archive-date=March 11, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150311213230/http://www.digitaleurope.org/Services/Highdefinitionlogos/UHD.aspx |url-status=dead }}{{cite news |title=DIGITALEUROPE launches Ultra High Definition logo for new generation of screens |publisher=DTG |url=http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=5226 |date=September 5, 2014 |access-date=September 6, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140907004939/http://www.dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=5226 |archive-date=September 7, 2014 |url-status=dead }} The technical requirements for the Ultra HD logo is that the display must have a resolution of at least 3840×2160, a video signal path that does not reduce the resolution, a minimum color space of Rec. 709, and HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2 content protection.{{cite news |title=Technical Requirements |publisher=DigitalEurope |url=http://www.digitaleurope.org/Services/Highdefinitionlogos/UHD/UHDLogoTechnical.aspx |access-date=September 6, 2014 |archive-date=March 26, 2015 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150326200507/http://www.digitaleurope.org/Services/Highdefinitionlogos/UHD/UHDLogoTechnical.aspx |url-status=dead }}

Policy positions

In November 2014, it published a paper called "Law Enforcement Access to Data in the European Cloud" that asks the European Commission to "consider filing an amicus brief" with a U.S. appellate court regarding Microsoft's legal challenge of a U.S. warrant for a Microsoft user's private emails. As DIGITALEUROPE sees it, the fact that the data requested is stored on servers located in Dublin, Ireland, means that U.S. authorities should use mutual legal assistance treaties rather than strong-arming a U.S. multinational, which raises concerns about national sovereignty.{{Cite web|url = http://www.digitaleurope.org/DesktopModules/Bring2mind/DMX/Download.aspx?Command=Core_Download&EntryID=849&PortalId=0&TabId=353|title = Law Enforcement Access to Data in the European Cloud|access-date = November 17, 2014|archive-date = November 29, 2014|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20141129055857/http://www.digitaleurope.org/DesktopModules/Bring2mind/DMX/Download.aspx?Command=Core_Download&EntryID=849&PortalId=0&TabId=353|url-status = dead}}{{Cite news|url = https://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/11/14/save_us_from_the_americans_american_corps_beg_eu/|title = Oi, Europe!
